“Omg Karen, dont take this personal but this adonis is an upgrade to that pig we saw at your place last week, for a moment I thought you might drag him over here.” Precious purred as she boldly apraised me. “Tell me about it babe.” Valerie chirped in. “I was actually looking forward to you bringing him here, as this party’s being such a bore, we might have had a laugh or two watching him shovel food into his big mouth.” they both chuckled at this. If glares could kill, both girls would have been incinerated on the spot. Oblivious to my killer glower, they continued chatting at my expense while karen and Jude shared a secret smile. “Honestly Karen ain’t it enough that you had to school at a public uni, you dating a local boy as well.” At this point my head was literarily blowing steam, it was only Karen's firm hold on my arms restrainted me from comiting assault. How can people be this clueless and shallow. “Talk about downgrade from Obiora, from dating a hunk to carossing with an hungry looking glutton like that, what was his name again?” “Bioye, I believe she introduced us the last time…its just a five lettered word, not long enough for simpletons to figure out.” I fired back, finally had enough. They both frowned and then gasped simultaneously as recognition dawned on their stupid faces…amazes me how some girls could be so pretty and dumb at the same time, it’s a disease. “Oh my dayz…I feel like a total idiot, I don’t know what to say.” Valerie laughed awkwardly. “Don’t say anything then, the world will be a better place without you talking so much.” I drawled, feeling a bit of satisfaction at their discomfort as I ignored a frown of disapproval from Karen, like I cared after all she wasn’t frowning when they were tearing into me in the first place. Jude laughed cheerily in a bid to relieve the tensed atmosphere. “well haven’t we all started the evening on a wrong foot? Apologies on our ignorance bro, we can be uptight at times but still I hope you don’t judge us by a simple misunderstanding, allow me to make it up to you, let’s leave the ladies with their palavas and locate where the drinks are hiding out.” (I might not like the tall immaculate idiot but I admit he knew how to pull crowd) I mused as he led me away. 8 Likes 1 Share |

Did I say jude was a crowd puller? Cos we were soon surrounded by an admiring crew of his own as he led a conversation, cracking in jokes where it’s needed. I was still mad at karen so I ignored her as I listened in without a word observing everyone over my cup. And they had the nerve to call this a pool party. Playing Lionel Ritchie saxophone songs like its 1980, discussing politics and criminal cases, this not a pool party o jere. This na law summit. I technically zoned out from the conversation after they began talking about state government allocations and how to spend it and started ogling the fine girls instead. When I thought the day wouldn’t get interesting, another group of late comers strolled in, a tall handsome dude at their lead. I noticed Karen stiffened beside me, they must know each other. He saw her too and made straight for where we were standing. “Hello Karen, fancy meeting you here, oh my you’re as ravishing and gorgeous as always.” His deep voice didn’t do him justice and I don’t like folks calling my girl ravishing with that sense of familiarity when she’s not salad mixture so I disliked him on the spot. “Hello Obiora, good to see you too, this is my boyfriend Bioye, Bj Obiora.” She said as I puffed up like watered bread. Obiora glanced briefly and me and then ignored me as if I never existed. “Father lord let this evening pass me by without breaking bottle on somebody’s head.” I muttered my prayers into my red cup. He must be my predecessor, the so called ex Valerie was talking about. I tried to move away to avoid fracas but Karen held on to me vice like, Obiora noticed this subtle exchange with a forced smile on his face as the other newbies moved in to exchange pleasantries. “You must be Bioye, I’m Gold, nice to meet you, ain’t you a stunner, Karen here didn’t do you justice, you’re so much hotter than she pictured you to be.” A sultly clayskinned girl with dreamy eyes said, exchanging an unsincere smile with Karen. They must have an history between them too, now this is becoming more like a pool party… from my nightmare. I must have failed to mention that all through the exchange, she was still holding unto my hand. Bringing her flirts on as she ignored Karen's stony reaction, the latter forgetting Obiora still held her own hands too. It was as if they planned it....divide and conquer, Gold held on to me like a long lost friend, asking questions after questions as I obliged her while Obiora steered karen away into the crowd with a pocessive arm around her waist. Jude poured drinks around as they begin discussions anew about domestic violence and the morality behind it…omo I just zoned out again as my traitous body relaxed to enjoy the closure of Gold’s body beside me until Jude asked me a question for the third time. “Earth to Bioye, I was asking what would you do if a woman attacked you?” Automatically my mouth ran without thinking. “whoop her ass of course.” They all gasped at this. Stammering to reduce the damage “tecnically speaking." I said. "there’s nothing morally wrong about self defense, if a woman attacked me to the risk of causing bodily harm, i won’t lie cos I’m gonna defend myself.” A few of them shrugged at this. And then a deep voice broke in. “What kind of answer do you expect of anon law practitioner from a public school, whoop her ass like a typical agbero.” Obiora grinned as some of his corhorts laughed. “So you mean to tell me you would do nothing if a deranged woman raised a knife against you.” I said. “Of course not, you don’t ever lay your hands against a woman no matter what, only weakminded men beat women.” The ladies cooed in approval as he basked in their attention. All the rest of my self-control erupted into flames after that, the insults from Karen's friend, her inability to come to my defense, I finally had it with these group of over privileged buffons. -What was the question asked.” I said -Never touch a woman no matter what." He answered -Wrong, it was if a woman attacks you, what are you gonna do? -My answer still remains the same -Even if she's bent on harming you in a fit of rage? -I’ll hold her off, that is why we are stronger -Have you ever held someone deranged with anger? -No matter how strong she is, she cannot be as strong as I am, after all women are delicate. -So you will sexualize her as unequal to you, which is not enough to not see her as a threat. -I did not say that… -You see her as a weaker vessel, as an impetinent child not worthy of you to take too serious -Of couse not…. -Until she manages to stab you because you underestimated her, so what are you going to do after that -Well I’ll hold her off or better still wrestle the knife from her hand.. -By doing that then you have broken your so called code of honor by laying hands on her -It’s a different thing, I am not beating her like you assumed I would… -How different bro, I bet you have never been stabbed before, your survival instincts kicks in as you do everything possible to stay alive, you kick, you fist, she reacts more savagely…. Plot twist, you either end up dead or you maim or kill her to save yourself, now it brings us right back to the start bro, so answer the question again for the sake of the ladies approval or common sense. “Its one thing to say something, it’s another to practice it. My guy I was being real by saying my mind. You on the other hand are the type that will not estitate to slap a woman or sexualize them on daily basis, y’all law practitioners in the making and how many cases have you heard of women stabing their husbands to death over this weak mind of a thing labeled by the society. So to the question what would I do if a woman attacks me, no sane man should hit a lady and no sane woman should raise her hand against a man and without thinking of the consequences of her actions….my answer stays the same even if every ladies here don’t like it, I ain’t no spittle licker." I used the silence after my rant to catch my breath and gulp down the rest of my drink hoping I had finally done enough to be kicked out of the party so I can go home and sleep. Instead, Jude whooped and clapped “Wow I say wow, anon practitioner of the law going head to head with our very own best, now that’s what a good debate looks like, you’re full of surprises Bioye, now I know what attracted Karen to you… bla bla bla. ” As if on clue, the other grudging clapped and the party resumed as if nothing happened. Obiora tipped his cup to me in salute, faking a smile for all to see, beside him Karen's face was blank but her eyes were fierce with pride. Gold held tightly unto my arms as she leaned over the table to refill her cup, her side boobs brushed against my chest. "Well Bioye I might not like your opinion but I can’t help but see the logic behind your argument, the guys here saw a boy from another school they think they can intimidate, but they met their match instead, you really are an interesting fellow.” She purred over her drink. “And you, what do you see.” i mused.
