Nnewi,Nsugbe,Agukwu,Onicha and Achala had true monarchy prior to the arrival of the whitemen but these kings never held military powers, however, towns like Umuoji and other numerious towns in Anambra had kings, known as "Ezeani" and this is hereditary. When the whimen first came to Umuoji they met a very wealthy and an influential man named Okelafor Ugwumba, whom they made a warrant chief in defiance to the true Ezeani that presided over Umuoji. Reason? Idont know but Ezeani Umuoji is still very much alive, well recognized and and he is even the the one that crown the Igwe Umuoji. He is from Abor village and Abor village is the head of Umuoji town. It troubles my soul why we can't revert to our previous state before the white man's invasion.

1. What about Owerri? (don't laugh) I heard a man who called himself the Eze Owerri on NTA saying that his lineage goes back to the 17th century or something like that. If anyone knows about that please reply.

2. Can Opobo be considered an Igbo dynasty since the progenitor was from Nkwerre? Pease no fights, It's a question)

Plus do any of you have photos, heres a photo of the Eze Nri (click to enlarge)

Obi of Onitsha (click to enlarge) I'm surprised at how 'Igbo' his dressing is considering Onicha's Igala/Bini origin.

3.

I thought the first Eze Nri (Eze Nri Ifikuanim) ascended in the 1040's?

onisha people are technically not igbos. they are Benin settlers.

AzukaO:
The Igwe of Nnewi has been in existence for several centuries (I will give the geneology soon). In 1904 when the Whiteman came into Nnewi, the Igwe that was on the throne was Ezeugbonyamba, the grandfather of the present Igwe Kenneth Orizu III.

What marks the Igwe throne from any other throne in Igboland or most other places is that it is hereditary by the oldest son of the Igwe at the time of his death as long as that son does not have any traditional issues against him - like murder, stealing, abomination against the land, etc.

If you pay a trillion dollars into the accounts of Ojukwu, late Dr Nwafor Orizu, late Ekenedilichukwu, Ibeto, Coscharis, Chu Okongwu or Gen Sam Momah and hand over the Igwe of Nnewi throne to any of them, they will curse you for hating them and run away. That throne is a no-go area for any other person no matter your political, financial or military power.

The four quarters of Nnewi ie Otolo, Uruagu, Umudim and Nnewichi each has its own Obi which is always hereditary and non-contestible. All the villages in these quarters and even the big family called 'umunna' have their respective Obi. Each is non-contestible.

The traditional office in Nnewi can be compared to that of the UK. The difference is that in years past the UK throne was usurped and fought over. The UK throne can also be inherited by a daughter. But the Nnewi throne has never be fought over. Nobody knows what will happen to anybody who dares, but nobody has dared to find out.

I will give you the names of all the Igwe of Nnewi since inception and a profile of the current Igwe Orizu soon.

D only thing I can tell u is that igbo enwe eze. what u people call traditional ruler is normally not applicable in igbo land until the arrival of the white men Which dates back long long before ur 1904.

At the deaath of their father, the last son (Nnagha also known as Eze Oji) was so overcome with grief that he left home to an unknown destination. When their father was alife, being the last born, he usually accompanied the old man to all meetings and events, carrying his "Akpa ofo". That's was the bag with the symbol of authority, the Ofo.
The young took along the 'Akpa Ofo:". and settled at Oduda Nnewichi, the present Azukaeme compound. The present custodian of the Ofo is Dr. Christopher Azukaeme.
There eldest son, Okoli, was NOT schemed out as was popularly believed. Rather what actually happened was that he left to look for their youngest brother. In those days , there were no roads, apart from footpaths or maps or anything of that nature. Moreover, he didn't know the whereabout of the young man. So it took him several weeks if not months to eventually locate him at Oduda. He settled in a portion of land, which is now presently occupied by the Ofokile's.
Just before he set out to go back home, he received the message that because of his long absence from home, the burial of their father had to take place and since according to tradition, the person that performed the funeral rites would automatically take over.
In order for peace to reign, he decided to move on to Umudim and settled there.
The correct Nnewichi geneology and unbroken lineage is thus:
Digbo (their father) had four children -
The last son, Nnagha (Eze Oji) had Dim Nago
Dim Nago got Dim Okankwodo
Dim Okankwodo got Dim Ofuonye
Dim Ofuonye got Ezeliaku
Ezeliaku got four children, Mgbaike, Ubaezuonu, Maduka and Ojimaba
Mgbaike begot Ajaegbo and Ebigbo
Ajaegbo got Thomas Azukaeme (the first black foreman of Coal coorporation, Enugu)
Thomas Azukaeme got Nwosubu (Denis Azukaeme)
Denis Azukaeme got five children Dr. Christopher, Engr. Edward, Dame Gloria, Mr. Ernest and Mr. Henry.

Eze Oji brought in twelve Dieties to present Nnewichi which were being worshiped by all his children.
The Ofo Nnaga is the ONLY Ofo in Nnewi that cannot and can NEVER be spilled with blood of any nature, an indication of the sanctity of the Ofo.
