The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria on Monday in Abuja canvassed for a minimum wage of N100,000 for civil servants in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the current minimum wage at the federal level is N7,500.

The Chairman of ASCSN information unit, Mr. Atuoba Obed, said this at a one-day seminar organised by the union.

The theme of the seminar is: “Creating a conducive working environment for improved productivity in the workplace.’’

Obed said the theme of the seminar was derived from the need to empower the members with the knowledge of managing the present socio-economic and political situation in the country.

He lamented the condition of workers in the civil service, saying, “The unbearable means of human survival in the country has continued to impoverish Nigerians.

“The salary of civil servants is very meagre, and the high cost of living in the country has eaten deep into the stipend called salary.

“We use this opportunity to call on the Federal Government to look into the present meagre salary of the civil servant and increase it to at least N100,000 for the least paid official.

“Also, the policy of consolidated salary and high tax on the salary of civil servants is a sorry case, which is widening their scope of financial and health predicaments.”

Obed also called for regular trainings for information officers to improve on their duties, especially in this era of information technology.

He described information and communications technology as the mouthpiece of the nation, saying that information officers, by virtue of their office, ought to understand government policies to give to the people the desired image of the country.

He said, “We use this opportunity to call on all ministries, departments and agencies to embark on regular training and retraining of their staff.

“Training programmes should be transparent, not to be used to favour some staff because it is not a personal project, but rather a Federal Government programme designed to improve the staff on their duties.’’

While declaring the seminar open, the Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili, tasked ASCSN over better conduct in order to achieve the desired goals of the nation.

Akunyili, who was represented by the Director of Research and Production in the ministry, Mr. Ladan Ndam, said the theme of the seminar showed that workers were willing to make things better this year.

There are somethings that still amaze me with the thinking of my people.Raising minimum wage might be a good idea, but of what use is the money going to be if what you will use it for will keep flying out of the reach of the common man.I think instead the need to restore the basic human right of the common man is the main issue here.Imagine a situation where we have uninterupted power supply, there is affordable health care and such basic things to get life going smoothly I tell you we might not need all the big figure salary.
Leaving out the fight for the restoration of fundamental human right for all these 'let them hear me say something'does not seem right to me.

Hmm, if the minimum wage is increased the salaries of the senior civil servants will increase as well. Very shrewd thinking indeed.
Let them learn from the trials and tribulations of ASUU and understand that they're just dreaming!

Highly disappointed in the reasoning capacity of the so called ASCNS. How on earth will a reasonable man agitate for a rise in pay of merely 10% of the population of a country in absolute economic, social, political, cultural and administrative shambles. While you dont expect a driver to speed above the speedometer of a his vehicle. Atleast they have succeeded in having A WORK- chop in place of workshop.

Abi ooooo.Civil servants are getting it wrong. What they should be fighting for is fixed marketing control measures.Raising minimum wage is not the solution.

That's kind of outrageous. Hope they just intent to start off the bargaining high, even so wit the rise in inflation, they just be courting more trouble for the country by and large.

I use to know a civil servant in that only goes to work to collect his salary with ease. The only time he goes to work is on pay days.Is the system still as porous as that?

NLC has is selfish ,they should demand for change in Nigeria and not just their salary only, lot of things are  abnormal in dis country, they are not the only ppl dat are suffering in dis country wat abt those dat aren't civil servants? dont they deserve to be  cared for by the govt?
they should demand for change in Nigeria, and not just Minimum wage, NLC is nothing but joke they are thieves pretending to be saints, sebi it was dis same tactics Oshiomole used to deceive Nigerians when he was the head of NLC pretending to Nigerians he loved dis country till he became Governor o
He is yet to impact on the lives of the ppl of Edo state  somebody should pls point at or mention just one single significant achievement of Oshiomole in Edo state if i'm wrong.

AS USUAL selfish minded people, who cant see beyond their noses.

where would the money come from?

those old, unproductive lot that clog up the system stiffling it

they dont do anything, just gossip, backbite and run their private businesses and at the end of the mnth, they rush and collect pay.

it would just worsene the climate of nigeria, cos weve gat more pertinent issues than increasing the monthly collection of civil servants.

by the way, all these could be politically motivated to bug down the ex-acting-vice-sparetyre-president.

read in betwwen the lines

No matter what we say here, there's every need to review civil servants salary as #7,500 is just too small.

Re: Civil Servants Demand N100,000 Minimum Wage by Nobody: 5:47pm On Feb 24, 2010
N7500 is ridiculous though N100,000 is too much.

but I agree the salary structure should be reviewed.

Beware of inflation though.
Re: Civil Servants Demand N100,000 Minimum Wage by Outstrip(f): 6:54pm On Feb 24, 2010
Nothing wrong with starting at 100,000. They might come to a compromise at 40,000.00. $50 a month. I am sure that is ridiculous even in Zimbabwe
Re: Civil Servants Demand N100,000 Minimum Wage by audacious: 7:35pm On Feb 24, 2010
All ya'll yapping about civil servants being lazy and only come to work on paydays should take a more critical look at the situation before criticizing their demands for an increase in the minimum wage (though I agree that the amount they are clamoring for is too high)

With the kind of minimum wage being payed now, how do you expect an individual to survive without doing other jobs or collecting kickbacks? You might say that is not an excuse but tell that to your kids or wife when you come home at the end of the month and your salary can't pay for school fees, house rent, food e.t.c.

Without a conducive work environment + poor pay, why would civil servants be motivated to work?
