Bloody Riot Averted In Kazaure by Nobody: 10:04am On Feb 23, 2010
Dutse— Swift intervention of security
operatives and the Emir of Kazaure Alhaji
Najeeb Hussaini Adamu, yesterday averted
what could have turned into a bloody riot in
Kazaure town in Jigawa state, following the
misunderstanding between a driver and a
police traffic warders which led to the
untimely death of the driver, leaving some
churches torched .
Vanguard gathered that the crisis started
when a Police Traffic Warder beat up a
commercial Tractor Driver for allegedly
violating road traffic rule, which led to his
death, on lookers which were mostly
youths in their thousands took to the
streets heading towards the Divisional
Police Headquaters in the town with the aim
of setting it ablaze, accusing the traffic
warder of extra judicial killing.
Sensing the danger of allowing the youths
to take the laws into their hands, the
security operatives and the Emir of Kazaure
intervened to avert the crisis, but before
they got to the scene of the problem, the
angry mob had torched a building
suspected to belong to a police officer
which was located in the area where
churches were concentrated in the town,
leaving many churches burnt.
The emir it was gathered through out last
night went round the town preaching for
peace and asking people to remain calm and
law abiding an action which greatly calm
down the riot,
The Emir who temporarily relocated his
palace to the residence of the Chairman of
the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in
the town to commiserate with them over
the incidence assured that all losses will be
compensated, while the perpetrators will be
made to face the wrath of the law.
He also informed the victims that he has
personally briefed the state Governor Sule
Lamido and His eminence, the Sultan of
Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa ’ad Abubakar
and they directed him to appeal to them to
be patient, as the crisis is under control.
Alhaji Najeeb then charged all residents in
the area to live in peace with one another,
saying that the emirate Council, the
government and the police will put heads
together to bring the culprits to book.
Speaking separately Pastor Amade M.A and
Reverend Father Jerome Roger Iyeh who
confirmed that churches where touched by
the rioters in Kazaure, condemned the crisis
and called for thorough investigation over
the matter.
Reverend father Iyeh however thanked the
Emir of Kazaure for his fatherely
intervention on the crisis, saying with a
good leader like him, the crisis would have
gotten even worse as innocent people
would have been killed. ‘Thank God nobody
died in the incidence.
“We thanked God that normalcy has
returned in the town and that no life was
lost during the unfortunate incident. We are
assuring the emir that, we will continue to
preach for peace and unity among the
followers of the two major religions, ” he
assured.
PFN condemns incidence
Meantime, the Pentecostal Fellowship of
Nigeria, PFN, has again condemned
yesterday ’s incidence in Kazaure in Jigawa
State where over eight churches were
reported burnt in another round of
religious crisis in the North Central state.
Reacting to the new wave of religious
violence in a telephone interview, the
National President of PFN, Pastor Ayo
Oritsejafor who is currently on an
evangelical mission to the US, described the
latest round of uprising as the height of
provocation, calling on the Federal
Government to take a decisive position to
arrest this orgy of madness in the name of
religion.
According to the fiery preacher, for far too
long the Federal Government had treated
religious crises in the North with levity
which has given rise to the situation we
have in the country today, where every
little incidence is treated as an opportunity
to annihilate Christians in the North.
Pastor Oritsejafor who says he is under
severe pressure from Christian youths in
the country many of whom had lost
parents, relations, places of worship and
valuable commercial and personal property
and are bent of retaliating every evil done
to them.
“I have been holding these youths in
accordance to the biblical injunction of
turning the other cheek whenever they are
under attack, but that was why I have been
calling on Christians in the North to defend
themselves whenever they come under
attack, ” he pointed out.
Angered by fresh reports of another
violence in the North, just few weeks after
the recent Jos crisis, Oritsejafor advised the
Federal Government to prove to the world
community that Nigeria is not a terrorist
nation by quickly fishing out the
perpetrators of all the religious uprisings in
the North without any further delay.
“If we cannot fish out the brains behind
these orgy of madness in parts of the
North, we will continue to grapple with the
situation and the more it happens the more
we will continue to be in world focus as a
nation harbouring fundamentalists and
therefore a potential terrorist nation, ” he
said.
When contacted last night for his reaction,
the Secretary General of CAN, Engineer Salifu
Samuel said he was awaiting reports from
his field men before making any categorical
statement on the incident.
It will be recalled that youths in Kazuare
went on the rampage burning churches in a
fresh round of religious uprising in the
town. As at the last count, churches
belonging to the Catholic Church, Deeper
Christian Life, CAC, Assemblies of God Church,
the Redeemed Christian Church of God, the
Living Faith Church, Outreach Bible Church
and Mountain of Fire have been torched.
A statement by the national youth president
of PFN, Dr. Abel Damina also urged the
Federal Government to do something fast to
arrest incessant religious crisis in the North
to avoid reprisal measures by Christian
youths in the country.
“This is fast getting out of hand,” he said in
a veiled threat to the nation’s authorities,
adding that the world is watching every
move we make here.
