Some artistes would start running to media houses for interviews/publicity simply because successful artistes do so... But do you realize you might be doing yourself more harm than good with the publicity? Yes I am saying it!

You might be doing yourself more harm than good... If you don't have clearly laid out brand strategies for yourself and/or your music. A smart interviewer will want to ask you questions that'll show the audience: who you are, what you do, why you do it, how you do it or want to do it differently from others, when you started doing it, what your future plans are or whether you are not smart enough to have any etc apart from the "main koko" for the interview (especially if you are new or reaching a new audience). Having a brand strategy will provide ready made answers to many of these questions through your brand messages/statements, unique selling proposition, positioning strategy, vision statements etc ... So, when they pop up, its like you already have an "expo" but if not, you might appear to be foolish, clueless and very unserious... So, the interview which should have had positive effects on your public image would instead destroy your image.

For example, Heard this on air last week:

Host : "What kind of music are you into?"

Artiste: "Afro-pop"

Host : How can you differentiate your music from others'

Artiste : "The sky is big enough for all the birds to fly, you know... Na one love, my people"

Can you imagine? These are the same questions Adekunle Gold answered "Urban highlife" and went further to define it... Mr Eazi answered "Banku Music" and went further to tell us the characteristics of his Banku music.

We need to wake up! We need to learn to start doing the first things first. Publicity without a solid brand strategy is like a building without solid foundation, I wonder how many storeys it can take before it collapses.
