These two have crossed paths quite frequently on the way to glory through the years, but this time, there's a World Cup berth in the balance.
It is impossible to speak of the shared history between Zambia and Nigeria without harking to the final of the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations. In sprawling Tunis, on the coast of the Mediterranean, Emmanuel Amuneke struck twice to deliver Nigeria’s second continental title.
It is particularly poignant because of the backdrop, and not that of the city.

It should have been a meeting of two Golden Generations: Nigeria were on the up, and had built a team that, two decades on, remains a reference. Chipolopolo themselves had shot into the consciousness following the Olympic Games in Seoul six years prior, during which they thumped tournament favourites Italy 4-0 on their way to winning their group.

Instead, it was a reformed Zambian side, no thanks to the 1993 air tragedy which claimed the lives of 18 players, six of whom were part of that 1988 team. Catharsis would come eighteen years later, and in the most fitting of venues - Libreville, the last fuelling stop for that ill-fated Zambian Air Force plane.
While Zambia had been forced to watch on as the Super Eagles celebrated in 1994, Nigeria was conspicuous by her absence in 2012, tripped up by Guinea in the qualifying rounds. The Chipolopolo may have triumphed in the typically exhilarating fashion of the underdog, but a look back to an encounter two years earlier should have served fair warning.

The 2010 Nations Cup in Angola rounded out Egypt’s continental dominance over the latter half of the decade. Zambia, led by a little-known dapper Frenchman named Herve Renard, only made it as far as the last eight before going out on penalties. However, it was the manner in which they troubled their more star-studded Nigerian counterparts in that quarter final that caught the eye.

By the end, it was the Super Eagles hanging on for penalties, winded and wilting in the heat of a 120-minute long Zambian onslaught.
Goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama pulled out all the stops, and was the hero of the shootout as Nigeria advanced, but the battle scars were evident in the semi-final, as a turgid and wheezing Nigeria team failed to rally after going behind to Ghana. They may have gone home early, but even then there was a sense of flexing, of coming together within the Chipolopolo setup.

Zambia would fittingly enjoy their next shootout rather more, upsetting perennial favourites Ivory Coast to hoist the continental trophy for the first time in their history.
A year on, the Super Eagles sprung a surprise of their own, winning the 2013 edition created to shift the timing of the Afcon from even to odd years.

Again, both sides met, this time in the group stage.
Current captain Mikel John Obi bobbled a penalty off target in the first half, before Emmanuel Emenike put Nigeria ahead. Zambia goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene then seized on a mistake by an errant Ogenyi Onazi to score the equaliser from the penalty spot in the 85th minute.
It was the second draw in a row for the Super Eagles, and marked a turning point in the tournament for Stephen Keshi’s side: they won every game after, conceding only twice more.

The decision of Caf to award a place at the 2013 Confederation Cup to the winner of the 2013 Afcon, rather than the 2012 edition, also added an undercurrent of friction between both nations.

Interestingly, considering the profile of both sides, the record in head-to-head encounters hardly embarrasses the Zambians. There have been 16 meetings between Nigeria and Zambia since 1973, with Nigeria winning six and drawing five. However, in competitive games, there is a clearer advantage, as Nigeria has won five of 12.

If this gives the impression that the Southern African side are often a hard nut to crack, that impression is certainly true.

One would have to go back 26 years for the last time Nigeria beat Zambia by a two-goal margin in a competitive match; indeed, Zambia may have won fewer games, but when they have it has tended to be emphatic. Twice in a one-year span in the early 80s, Zambia meted out three-goal thumpings, the latter coming at the 1982 Africa Cup of Nations, with Nigeria as defending champions!

With all this shared history between both nations, it is a wonder that this will be their first ever meeting in a qualifying series. Neither side was able to build on their surprise Afcon win, and have undergone significant upheaval since.

In the build up to the 2018 world cup Nigeria has already drawn the first blood by beating them in Ndola 2-1. So the game in Uyo come October becomes the final of finals to prove Nigeria’s dominance or Zambia’s revenge.

Nigeria vs Zambia: We’ll break World Cup jinx against Super Eagles – FAZ President, Kamanga

The President of the Football Association of Zambian, FAZ, Andrew Kamanga, has tipped the Chipolopolo to break the World Cup jinx of the Super Eagles when they both meet in October 7 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo for the 2018 World Cup qualifier.

Kamanga believes that the Copper Bullets can break the odds and secure a first World Cup ticket, at the expense of the Eagles.

The Zambia national team are the only team in Group A, that is yet to qualify for any World Cup tournament with Cameroon, Algeria and Nigeria all qualified in the tournament before.

Kamanga said, ‘’We are putting in every effort to make sure that this team is adequately prepared as we face Nigeria, which for me is the do or die game whoever wins that game will be assured of going to Russia 2018,’’

‘’But most interestingly in this group, we are the only ones who have never been to the World Cup, but with the favour we continue to draw on we should be able to qualify, come November because we have the advantage of playing Cameroon in the final round,’’ Kamanga told fazfootball.com.

The Super Eagles, who are unbeaten in 4 matches in the current qualifiers, top the group table with 10 points, 3 more than Zambia.

Zambia to change kit makers before Nigeria clash

Zambia will wear a new kit when they take on Nigeria in a 2018 World Cup qualifier in Uyo in October.

The Chipolopolo are being kitted by Mafro, an Asian-based sportswear maker and four months into the two-year deal they signed, the deal was terminated by the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ), who alleged that Mafro failed to meet the contract conditions set out.

According to a statement by FAZ spokesperson, Desmond Katongo, they are already in talks with another kit maker.

“The contract between FAZ and Mafro was based on the premise that either parties would meet their obligations to the other,” Katongo said in a statement issued by FAZ.

“Despite agreement for the provision of playing kit and replica jerseys, Mafro has only partially fulfilled its obligation with regard to playing kit and similarly not been able to meet their delivery schedule for replica kits.

“MAFRO is therefore in breach of contract by their failure to meet these and several other conditions set out.

“These matters have been brought to their attention and they have been given several opportunities to redress the situation to no avail.”

Nigeria leads Group A with 10 points, followed by Zambia with seven points.

Cameroon is in third position with three points, while Algeria has one point from four games

Rohr Plots Super Eagles’ Game Plan With Zambia Videos

Gernot Rohr has commenced close study of two Zambia’s Match footages ahead of Nigeria’s crunch 2018 World Cup qualifier against Chipolopolo’s in Uyo on October 7, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Super Eagles’ Media Officer Toyin Ibitoye told Completesortsnigeria.com that the former Burkina Faso coach is leaving no stone unturned to ensure Zambia are flattened like Cameroon at Goodwill Akpabio Stadium.

Towards this end, Rohr has began a closer study of Zambia-Algeria double-header videos, admitting that the two matches confirmed Chipolopolo’s resurgence in Group B.

” I can confidently tell you that Super Eagles coach is seriously busy with the two Zambia’s games footages,” Ibitoye told Completesportsnigeria.com.

” Rohr has been studying the tapes with his backroom staff, with the aim of coming up with the right tactics for the game.

” All hands must be on deck, Zambia will not be taken lightly.”

Nigeria lead Group B with 10 points but would need an outright win over Zambia to guarantee her third straight World Cup qualification after matchday 5.

On the other hands, Zambia need to dig deep for a win in Uyo to take final group matches to the wire.

Yeah... the Algerian head coach got a good point you know, but it is okay... let the Zambians keep talking and yapping.... they will be humbled in Uyo come October... they will see real fire that day. I rate the Zambians and they got a fine young team too... but The Super Eagles will be just too much for them.

Well said! That ain't gonna happen thanks for the loss against South Africa. The loss against South Africa was big wake up call to us, and the team isn't gonna make the same mistake again. There's absolutely no way we're losing this game. Mark my words!

And to all my prayer warriors: we need all our prayers to be injury free. Please pray that all our players, especially the key players are going to be injury free going into these two final qualifiers. To me, the only way we can lose to either Zambia or Algeria is if our key players are not available so let's pray that that doesn't happen.

Nigeria/Zambia: Zambia FA Boss Tags Clash With Eagles a 'Do or Die' Affair

Abuja — President of the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ), Andrew Kamanga, has tagged the Match day 5 FIFA World Cup 2018 qualifier with the Super Eagles on October 7 in Uyo as a 'do or die' encounter for the Chipolopolo.

Zambia has seven points compared to the Super Eagles superior haul of 10 points from the first four matches of Group B fixtures.

Speaking at the weekend, Kamanga was quoted by Fazfootball.com, to have drummed his position into the players that they dare not drop any point in the fixture against Nigeria in the Akwa Ibom State capital.

"We are putting in every effort to make sure that this team is adequately prepared as we face Nigeria. For me is a do or die game as whoever wins that game will be assured of going to Russia 2018 World Cup," Kamanga restated in his directive to the players

The Chipolopolo have suddenly found their voices after successive victories over Algeria in a spate of four days to narrow the gap separating them and Nigeria to just three points.

This perhaps must have informed the decision of FAZ to be toying with the idea of pitching a camp in Europe to prepare the team for the must win clash in Uyo.

Kamanga, said at the weekend that it would be much easier to prepare in Europe where some of the national team players ply their trade.

The Zambian FA boss believes that the return flight to Europe will also be shorter and more convenient for the players from Nigeria after the match.

"We have only got four weeks before the Nigeria game, so we are looking at options in terms of where we can camp the team and get the best value.

"As you know some of the players are already in Europe, they did not return with us to Zambia from Algeria. They have gone back to their clubs. We may see it fit to camp the team in Europe so that it is easier to prepare adequately and it is actually shorter to go into Europe from Nigeria," Kamanga stressed.

He said that FAZ would not leave any stone unturned to ensure victory for Zambia, coached by Wedson Nyirenda, ahead of their last fixture in November against Cameroon in Yaounde.

Zambia, the winners of the Africa Cup of Nations in 2012, is the only Group B team that has never been to the FIFA World Cup final and will be motivated to foil Nigeria's aspiration to secure their sixth World Cup ticket.
