The Nigerian Labour Congress Benue state chapter yesterday (18/9/2017) arising from it's emergency meeting countered the directive by the state government emergency committee on salary issues which had on 30/8/2017 through circular SECSI/FIN/I/58 directed all state workers to obtain bank statements on their various salary accounts from the period of August 2015 to February 2017. The circular which was signed by the deputy governor Engr Benson Abounu and made public emphasized compliance by all and reiterated that it is an exercise meant to arrive at a workable staff wage bill to pave way for clearance of salary arrears. However in a twist the NLC Benue state chapter has rejected the move and called on civil servants not to comply with the directive stating that it has agreed to dialogue with the government due to the intervention of the national body as such the purported circular from the deputy governor be disregarded. Workers on their part have also lamented the hardship caused them by the directive of the government . Speaking to me a worker lamented that he has spent two days in the bank yet he is unable to get the bank statement as the queue at his bank is much and the bank is experiencing network issues. Also a female staff of the ministry of finance wondered why in the wake of non payment of salaries they would be subjected to such untold hardship when the government knew they had no money. She further stated that they bank statements were not free and the government was insensitive to their plight to call for this now.
