It's wrong for the magistrate not to have taken a plea. It's human rights abuse. Besides, such a simple offence is bailable and the accused should have been granted bail...

Long time being away

You don't on a normal basis, but even if u decide to, what then is new about it? Must the media broadcast it? Must the whole world hear of a rather minor incident?
But the answer to your question remains an affirmative NO!

You call it a minor incident but you clearly wouldn't like it to happen to you. I believe by prosecuting such offenders and broadcasting it other people will understand that insulting someone or someone's mother is not a good thing Sir.

So what you are implying now is that, anyone that insults someone should be arrested and prosecuted because is now a federal offence to insult someone Bros, wake up, this is planet earth and Nigeria to be precise, so think again. Insults are more like a lifestyle here in Nigeria and just because one has the money and influence doesn't mean he/she has to exercise them always!

Na wa o. Freedom of speech is really a thing of the past in Nigeria. Since when did it becomes a crime to insult someone?

So i have the right to exercise my freedom of expression by insulting you and your mother?

Can you state where in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria where it is stated that the governor or anyone else must/should accept insults....where in the Constitution the rights to insults is granted?

Freedom of expression does not mean the right to insult or defame someone else!

Do that and the relevant section of the LAW will be activated and use against you just as it has been done to the accused. end of story

all these freedom of speech ambassadors here, does the freedom include insulting people? why don't people understand the very simple and basic things? we just muddle everything together and start writing senselessly. I am sure many of you will spill blood if someone insults you.

You are encroaching on a citizens right. He has the right to seek legal action on the assault on his character and that of his mother, same right as you. You may choose not to exercise it. Whether he exercises the right always , I wouldn't know but you can tell us more since you seem to know.

Lol. Pls what is the relevant section of the law?

Don't centre here an assume what u know nothing about.
General anyone is allowed to say anything.
If the person affected does not like it, he has the right to bring up a CIVILsuit of defamation.

civil suit is not criminal! It only awards damages!
No one goes to jail!

Freedom of expression! It is even wider than freedom of speech. It means I can express my thoughts in anyway I wish!

If only one say something about me that is false and offensive, the option available to me are CIVIL SUITS! Not criminal!
Therefore it is not a crime! One can only sue for damages!
