London says it won’t renew Uber’s license

Uber’s application for a new licence to operate in London has been rejected on the basis that the company is not a “fit and proper” operator.

The ride hailing app will no longer be able to offer services in their current form within the M25, despite the firm claiming 3.5 million Londoners regularly use its app.

Transport for London (TfL) announced its decision on Friday via its Twitter page

The authority wrote;

“TfL has concluded that Uber London Limited is not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator licence.”

The current licence expires on 30 September but Uber has 21 days to appeal and can continue to operate until that process expires.

Transport for London said that it had rejected the US cab hailing app’s application to renew its licence because “Uber’s approach and conduct demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility” in relation to reporting serious criminal offences, obtaining medical certificates and other issues.

As many as 40,000 Uber drivers will potentially now be forced off the city’s streets.

Uber is the subject of fierce opposition from the GMB trade union and the Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said in a statement:

"I fully support TfL's decision - it would be wrong if TfL continued to license Uber if there is any way that this could pose a threat to Londoners' safety and security."

It's all politics well played by London's expensive black taxi in collaboration with the government.

Reasonable, at least until the uber team places client's safety first. Many of these so called drivers are deficient in the knowledge and application of corporate ethics.

Useless exploiters.
If only there's a proper labour laws in Nigeria, majority of things I heard from their drivers would have earned them a ban in Nigeria too.

It has been appealed, and status quo will be maintained for however long the appeal takes. The fact is the London black cab drivers have never liked Uber because it provides a cost-effective and easier option. They intensively lobbied to make sure TFL denies Uber the licence. The real losers are the consumers who will now be subject to the extortionate prices of the London black cab drivers.

Not just in London. Uber seems to be drawing the ire of local taxi unions the world over. Even here in Lagos(Saturday Telegraph once did a piece on that). The other day,I got to find out that Bill de Blasio is not such a big fan of Uber because the local taxi drivers in NY form the bulwark of his political support base. C'mon, what happened to good old "competition",guys?

It does not say UK but "LONDON" . Each city has the right to make its own rules. Uber has plenty of financial clout and I see this going to court. If this was pre Brexit it would ultimately have been decided in Brussels.
When you "employ" so many independent operators you will always be vulnerable to this kind of politics but ultimately money talks. Expect Uber to back Khan's opponent at the next election after humbly "putting in place measures to address public concerns".
They have the money to rent or inspire internet noise denouncing the government and we must not forget. They are very useful to many people.
The Black Cabs are unhappy because their rules are different. They have to pass an exam called the KNOWLEDGE. I AM NOT EXAGGERATING when I tell you that exam is HARD. Just Google or check YOU TUBE for the KNOWLEDGE OF LONDON. It takes an average of 3 years to pass
While Uber drivers just use Apps and the rules remain the same for Black Cabs. There are dozens of MINICAB companies that have the same issues as Uber but none as big and therefore none a threat to the Black Cab. . This is a war between the Black Cab and Modernisation . Change is the only constant in life

In Nigeria without transport operator regulation we will not know when ever they fall out of line. They are probably better than anything else we have.
We must have signed in Uber license because they are operating in London.

If care is not taken. They might lose their licence here too in Lagos. The competition is not fair at all. Uber fare is too ridiculous
