I don't want to get into the British or Nigerian argument. But every single time I've a mention of Sade every single time, from back to Nigeria, to US and now in UK they write "Nigerian born British artist". I don't know what that means though undecided Even when I was reading a peice on her being the most sucsssful British female artist of all times they still chimed in Nigeria. Plus she goes by her full name Folashade Adu. . go figure.

And @ Tpia, I've been reading EloSela's post for more than 2 years, she's a self hating confused human being with esteem issues, you're doing yourself a disfavour arguing with her.

FVCK YOU and the horse you rode in on! I am a PROUD BLACK BRITISH WOMAN OF NIGERIAN descent and I am not afraid to say so no matter how many times idiots like you an Tpia rant on about how I should be proclaiming the Nigerian part more loudly. Again FVCK YOU for coming in here and adding nothing but BS to this thread!

nobody here has a problem with any part of her heritage aside from angiefan and elosela

mamagee is just daft

people are simply appreciating Sade as she is, but angiefan and elosela have a problem with that.

interesting that they have nothing to say about her music [which they probably know nothing of] but only want to nitpick about british immigration

I don't have a problem with her heritage Doofus. It is you who has the problem. She is Nigerian born and I have written that many times on here. Again she, is NIGERIAN BORN!! What part of that sentence can't your dumbass comprehend? AGAIN for your slow ass she is NIGERIAN BORN and her name is FOLASADE ADU, a Nigerian name just like my name  ;ELOSELA' is Nigerian. What has got your goat so much that you feel the need to accuse me of denying Sade's and my own roots? And why does the way I choose to define myself stop you from sleeping at night?

boy i cant beleive people on here are getting worked up over Sade's heritage, Sade in my honest opinion IS regarded on the international music scene as a british and NOT nigerian artist, however she does recognise her nigerian heritage.  the thing is she was not brought up in nigeria neither was she socialised in a nigerian environment eg nigerian blood relatives, from age 4 upwards her entire life was spent around white family members therefore in my view she isnt really a nigerian person as she has neither spent time around nigerians, learnt the culture or been exposed to the nigerian way of life.  this is further demonstrated by her choice of partners who have nearly always been 99.9% non black and non nigerian (apart from the father of her daughter who is Jamaican) therefore to my mind Sade is really more of a british woman than a nigerian woman.

i know we like to claim people who are doing well in life - who doesnt? but the reality is Sade is known and recognised around the world NOT as an international nigerian artist but as a british one, I think you have to remember that to appeal to an international audience you have to have commercial appeal which means be appealing to a mainly white consumer market as they are the ones who constitute a larger chunk of the market and that means looking and sounding more like them in terms of physical appearance, lyrics, etc  this is why certain black artists do "better" commercially ie make more money than more "traditional" black artists for example mariah carey, beyonce, rihanna have more of a cross over appeal ie whites prefer their look and sound because they are closer to what whites perceive as beauty and talent moreso than say estelle, india arie or jennifer hudson - its unfortunate but thats the way the fickle music industry works,  anyway i digressed there, i still think Sade is great though but she is a british artist not a nigerian artist - my two cents.

here are some recent pics of sade trying to avoid the paparazzi - so down to earth and unassuming who would beleive that she's worth an estimated £40m - she comes across as so ordinary and down to earth.

She became an international star 25 years ago. I always thought she was beautiful and she still looks the same.

kindly focus on her music and leave who or what she identifies with out of the matter.

and stop projecting your personal insecurities on her.

her mother is white- what's so unusual about her socializing with white people when she was growing up.

did john fashanu not do the same? And did you never hear of unmixed black people who were adopted and also grew up and socialized exclusively with whites.

as per her choice of partners- the father of her child is a black jamaican man, i assume, so what are you going on about?

there are plenty of nigerian/african women who arent mixed, were born and raised in nigeria/africa and who only date white men, so quit moaning over Sade's relationships.

there are countless black men too who only date whites.

Aww the mad dog called EloSela barks again. I would do the same I adviced Tpia and not go down that road with you.

Mumu Gee you're making a fool of yourself, even if you dont like Sade you must have lived all your life in the village not to have heard of them (Sade really is a group, although no one seems to notice that). Do yourself a favour and borrow a Sade album pref Smooth Operator. It would enrich your life, And that isnt saying much

you guys can find anything to argue about that.

I guess claiming british identity is a sign of low self-esteem.

jeez learn to accept other people's choices.

hello dimwit it appears that reading and comprehension are not your forte so ill try and keep this as simple as possible for you - many people on here appear to want to claim Sade as one of their own for the simple fact that she happened to be born in nigeria, however nationality is not solely a matter of looking at one's birthplace it goes far beyond that and this is why i referred to the environment in which she was raised in, the people she dates and her preferences, i also noted that despite showing a prefernce for white guys in the past she had her daughter with a black guy, i brought up the nationality of the guys she  dates as this usually is a reflection of who a person prefers to identify with and how they percieve their own identity.  For you to jump on me with your ridiculous claim that i am reflecting my insecurities on Sade as an individual gives me an indication of how utterly braindead you are, you know absolutely nothing about me and therefore to make such a claim  means that you are either retarded or psychotic or probably both.  I am in no way attacking Sade's choice of partners nor am i criticising the environment that she was brought up in i am merely pointing  out facts which are obvious to most people with a grain of intelligence which of course excludes you.  I will say it again - this time very slowly so that maybe, just maybe it might sink in this time,  based on Sade's upbringing and socialisation Sade is a british artist NOT a nigerian artist comprende (or may be not) grin grin grin

sorry to resurrect this thread but contrary to rumours, Sade still visits Ibadan once in a while. I read an interview of hers about 8 years ago in which she jokingly and fondly talked about her grandma's herbal potions which she tried sometimes when she visited Naija. I also know that a few years ago she surprised a family friend's son in Ibadan by singing his favourite song on his birthday. He didn't even know that she was in the house or even in Naija. She's really so humble, talented and very beautiful. Super classy singer. Right up there with Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin and other timeless female musicians. class class class, i'd say. Love her.
