Every Nigerian president comes with a promise to fight corruption.

He, too, was not different.

So, he devised a system known as the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

With the IPPIS technology, approximately 50,000 ghost workers in the public sector were identified.

And as a result, the nation has been saved approximately N200Billion since the implementation of the IPPIS project.

He also introduced the “cashless” system of money transfer and transaction.

This system was designed to meet up with global best practice of monitoring financial transactions. It was also a strategy for monitoring the transfer of proceeds of corruption.

This system was effective in tracking illegal cash transfers, to the point that MasterCard made Nigeria its regional headquarters for its West/East and Indian Ocean islands zone. Thus raising the profile of Nigeria’s e-commerce industry.

He didn't stop there.

He went further to battle the eternal wave of corruption in the agricultural sector.

First, he placed 16 million farmers on a special database (e-Wallet) of the Ministry of Agriculture. This way, farmers nationwide received subsidized farm inputs without the need for middlemen.

This method radically reduced the age-long corrupt practices in the distribution of fertilizer in that sector.

The implementation of the e-Wallet system saved the national treasury about N50Billion. That is, money that would have gone to some private pockets.

He also took the anti-corruption crusade to the operations of the Nigeria Customs Service.

In 2014, for the first time, using anti-corruption checks, the Nigeria Customs earned as much as N977 Billion (almost 1 trillion) in customs revenue. He effectively shattered the record he set in 2013 (N833Billion).

Till date, this is the highest revenue any Custom regime has ever collected and declared in the history of Nigeria.

Oh, let give a mention how he relieved some of his Ministers for mere allegations of fraud (Stella Oduah) and conflict of interest (Barth Nnaji).

Still, he didn't stop there.

After 12 years of anxious wait by media practitioner, investigators, etc, a law to ensure transparency and accountability in the public sector was instituted.

This occurred when he signed into law the Freedom of Information (FoI) Bill.

By signing this law, he effectively put himself and his government up for public scrutiny.

Meanwhile, a certain "progressive" governor of Lagos state ferociously opposed the domestication of this same FOI law in his state.

Sorry. I digress.

So, signing the FOI bill into law was a victory for democracy, transparency, justice and development.

Also, in order to combat financial improprieties and corruption both in the private and public sector, he designed some technologies and systems to assist in that regard. For instance, the Treasury Single Account (TSA), Bank Verification Number (BVN), etc.

As a result of all these, Nigeria - a country previously ranked by Transparency International (TI) as the 3rd Most Corrupt Nation in the world - improved in the global index of corrupt nations.

First, it improved to the No. 14 position.

Later, in December 3, 2014, it further improved to the No. 39th position.

Till date, Nigeria has not improved beyond that position.

Indeed, this was by no means a perfect anti-corruption crusade. But it was a sincere one.

It was also one with a clear direction. And most importantly, each methods and systems were designed to outlive that administration.

The moral of this story:

The war against institutional and age-long corruption in Nigeria can never be won by crude sensationalism.

When a zoologist wants to use technology to fight a simple case of BMW purchase or income accruable to NNPC that could not be accounted for.

Anyway, the dollars is America's currency, such a huge amount cannot be missing or stolen from Nigeria without America knowing. It is their money, America will know.

Dieziani & Dasuki will explain better.

Stealing is Ole,Oye Oshi,Barawo. Corruption encompasses all including Nepotism, Tribalism, Favouritism,Cronyism, Stealing of money etc. What GEJ meant is that do not color stealing with corruption. stealing is stealing and whoever is indicted or caught should be treated as a thief.
No competent court has indicted these people you mentioned. In fact Dasuki has been granted bail by various courts.

The only reason why GEJ is not in prison now is the Niger delta militants.

We can't afford oil pipeline bombings with the recent recession. It's those that took all the positions in his govt. that will suffer the burnt. I mean the cry babies.

I was an ardent hater of GEJ then but I was mislead into believing Buhari was an honest man who could work and without doing my own research I fell for the lies but today I think GEJ was unto something great for Nigeria and we should have given him a second chance

Stop blaming PGEJ for not saving. The Nigerian laws and constitution do not allow for such extravaganza...
