Hello Nairalanders,
I have something that has been bothering me for some time now. I manage a hotel here in Nigeria, and the hotel is under renovation. I have 5staffs and just barely 5 functional rooms. Recently someone came to apply for the post of cleaner in the Hotel, I did an interview on her and asked her a lot of questions regarding the job, she said she could do the job. The next day she started work without waiting for a message from me. Few days into the work, other staffs started complaining that she isn't doing her duties, I called for a meeting and asked her if she was sure she could do this job, she said yes, I said ok. 1 week latter she says she can't continue the work, that I should pay her for the one she has worked.
Now she is disturbing me for 2weeks that she worked here.
What do I do?

It is simple now. If there was an agreement as regard payments then, determine what a week job pay will be and pay her.

you dont need all this stories..she worked for them and the owner knew..there's a consent already

There is no legally binding contract between him and the staff
and he is under no obligation to pay her.

He can choose to be compassionate which is the right thing to do.

from your statements I deduce that you are incapable of running that business. how will you condone a candidate resuming work just after interviewing without a formal invitation to resume work? that my friend is rubbish.

pay her her money and let her be on her merry way. even if it's 70 percent.

The fact that you called her and asked if she was willing to continue the job, after some complaints were made against her, shows your acknowledgement of when she started working even though you didn't explicitly ask her to start.
Pay her for the 2 weeks and be very careful next time.

Any employer that employed a staff on verbal arrangement with out issuing an employment letter stating d terms of agreement before d person starts the job, he has intention of cheating d employee..I have to be honest to him, pay her for d days she worked for u n follow d right procedure in employing your staff.

At least you both had agreed on some certain terms before she started working for you so I guess your story here is incomplete.... undecided

Unfortunately you have to pay for the little time she spent working for you so that shouldn't be a big deal.

You may calculate that per day..Let's say #200per day... X 2 weeks...

Or you can jzt dash her money and forget the whole drama... Shikena cool

It's obvious that..
+ You don't want to pay her and want validation for it.
+ You knew she started the work but want it to seem like, you not employing her the right way makes her undeserving of her pay
+You claim you had a low turn out at the time also proves the point that you just don't want to pay her.

and mind you, all the above are from what you said. If she were to speak about the same events, more would have been revealed possibly about the ill treatment meted on her by your other staff, possibly inconducive nature of the work environment. who knows whether your said meeting was a shouting match.. etc

whatever the case maybe, she worked for you and deserves to be paid

Next time, make the terms and condition of service spelt out before employing anybody.
whether you make huge profits or not is none of her business as she did the job she was employed for. would you have increase her pay if the reverse was the case?

The hotel owner is not under any legal obligation to pay the cleaner! Why?
She was interviewed right but she didn't even wait to confirm or hear, if she was needed. Hence no agreement or evidence of been employed, you willingly started the work.
The hotel owner might decide to say, he only pays people who have worked for nothing less than one - month. So undecided

Again, even the one week job done was full of complaint and so, uf it were you, does she deserves to be paid really

The bible says a worker deserves his or her wage. You re talking legally add morality to it

She came to work wit that mission in mind, some security guys do that, they will work for a month and are gone after pay! Have an agreement next time, nothing beats a written agreement. whether as an offer letter or as an agreement signed. But for now u really don't have a choice than to pay.

How many millions is she demanding that you have to create a topic for it. When she started cleaning and u knew that you don't need her services or pay her why didn't u stopped her? Pls kindly pay for the number of days/weeks she worked and stop complaining. Or are u indirectly want us to know that you own a hotel?

Calculate 2 weeks pay of the amount you mentioned in your discussion with her or if you did not mention any amount, then pay her the appropriate amount you would have sincerely paid anybody holding that position... Don't play smart, try to be a reasonable leader. That act you are trying to engage in right now is the typical way our pastors (and I hope that you don't want to be like our pastors) and leaders behave and that is what is killing the nation in entirety. White man would call it'take advantage of soft target' but street man will call it Shaygun or Cheating!
