Have you been wondering where next to travel to see the future of the world? Are you curious about the wonders of technology and being part of a digitised society where everything just works seamlessly and effortlessly with a click? Look to northeastern Europe, the country called, Estonia.

In 1991, Estonia came into being as a breakaway country of about 1.3 million people out of the former USSR. And one thing they chose to drop behind in the old Russian hegemony was the traditional human-run gigantic bureaucracy and paper-based system seen in all parts of the world. They have consistently been pursuing a 100% digitised society with laser focus since the ‘90s. Estonia runs an online government initiative called e-Estonia which has become a benchmark for how a government can successfully and conveniently move the bulk of its services to a single online platform. According to the e-Estonia website the program is “the evolution of the e-state”. Launched in 1997, citizens are able to file taxes online since 2000 - 95% of Estonians file taxes online - and also obtain medical prescriptions and test results, sign documents, vote in elections and allow foreigners to become e-residents, all through their online platforms.

According to BBC reports, Anna Piperal, a spokesperson for e-Estonia says “Today, the information is stored inside the country,”. “But we are working on a governmental cloud that will be backed up in Estonian embassies around the world.” “We need more engineers, more designers, more testers, more programmers, and architects. More copywriters, more social media experts and more web developers.” she says.
For techies, the e-Estonia (e for electronic) model provides endless opportunities as it pushes out technical roles to support the system. An e-government program like this is a good recipe for tech jobs creation.
Estonia says it's the first country in the world to offer "e-residency" - granting anyone in the world a digital government ID and access to online services.

According to visitestonia website, "nowadays everyday Estonians have no need to look back as they enjoy a wide range of e-solutions. The Estonian state currently offers 600 e-services to its citizens and 2,400 to businesses. Utilizing a locally developed Electronic ID card, which effectively acts as an online passport, a large proportion of Estonians can and regularly do:

- Sign contracts remotely.
- Use ID cards to pay for public transportation.
- Pay for parking using a mobile phone.
- Vote online.
- Conduct bank transactions online.
- Receive digital prescriptions from the Doctor, even remotely.
- Declare tax online.
- Students can check grades, learning progress and access learning materials.
- Create a new company within 18 minutes on your PC.
- Apply for government aid, (e.g. maternity leave pay)."

And with the e-Residency card, foreigners can enjoy all these benefits from anywhere around the world.

There is wireless internet almost everywhere in Estonia, and almost always free and speedy. Wireless internet access points can be found in most public locations like parks, squares, pubs, cafés, restaurants, airports, trains, bus stations and often it's even possible to access the internet in what seems a remote location, on a beach or in a forest.
How can someone take advantage of this e-Estonian residency opportunity? According to LeapIN, the Basics of the program is this:
"When you sign up for Estonian e-Residency, you receive a government-issued smart ID card that provides digital identification and authorisation. That way, you can digitally sign important documents, access secure services, and make secure transactions -- even if you don't live in Estonia. For example, e-Residency would allow an Indian entrepreneur to establish an Estonian company that he runs from Singapore to serve clients based in Germany. He'd also be able to use his digital signature to sign contracts with customers throughout the European Union. All of it would be done online, remotely, and completely hassle-free."

Physical national borders and restrictions will no longer present an obstacle. You can start a business, open bank accounts, make transactions, sign contracts and even declare taxes, all on your computer," said Kaspar Korjus, Estonian e-Residency Program Director.
Estonia is located in northeastern Europe, flanked by Finland, Latvia and Sweden. It is a small coastal country which you can access by flight, sailing, road ride from anywhere in Europe. It is a short ferry trip away from Finland and Sweden, a coach ride away from such European capitals as Warsaw and Berlin, and an overnight train from St. Petersburg will land you at the heart of the capital, Tallinn. If you love medieval cities, Talinn is one of the best preserved medieval cities in Northern Europe.

So if you are thinking of another vacation city or job emigration or scaling the hurdles presented by living in less developed countries, with beautiful technology systems that make life easy, think Estonia or e-Residency!
