It may be true that this is a scam and at the same time it may be genuine. You just have to be very careful and if along the line they requested for sensitive information and (or) payment or processing fees, please run as you can!

Any mail sent to an address @ shell.com cannot be a scam.
If it was shellng.com or shell-nigeria.com, then you are in for a scam.
One can always check the domain registrar to be sure you are sending in to the right contact.
