Abia state chapter of the Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN) has demanded for release of members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) detained as a result of the military crackdown during the Operation Python Dance II in the state.

Presenting his address during a prayer session for the repose of the souls of those who died during the military operation, and held at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, Umuahia, the state chairman of YOWICAN, Comrade Eugene C. Okonta, passionately reminded the governor that most families today still do not know the whereabouts of their loved ones.

His words, “It is true that we have lost our loved ones, we are grieved just as the governor is grieved. We as youth wing of CAN have been consoling the immediate families of victims of Operation Python Dance ll. It is a truism that there is no perfect society. Little wonder political experts lecture that conflict brings about social development.

“Conflict theorists are of the view that thesis and antithesis co-jointly produce synthesis. However, any reaction that is not at the service of positive social change should be avoided”.

On the way forward, Okonta said the chief security officer of the state, in his wisdom, may not accept such military adventure in the state again since Gov. Ikpeazu is equal to the task, adding that further interventions by security personnel should be done more professionally.

According to him, dialogue and not violence should be embraced as a means of seeking solution to national challenges, pointing out that it is imperative to reintroduce history as a subject in Nigerian schools so that the young people will be taught about the Nigerian civil war and why such incidents should be avoided.

The chairman insisted that unemployment should be given due attention, as many youths who were victims of the Operation Python Dance ll (Egwu Eke) were not meaningfully engaged. His words: “Youths should also be integrated in policy making; they have contributions to make for the development of our society”.

He lamented that, more often than not, Nigerian youths are relegated, by the powers that be, to the background.
