I once read that sneezing make the heart pause so the brain is definitely the answer 24/7 always functioning. even after death it functions for a while before it stops.

The heart supplies blood to the brain, the moment it stops every part of the body being to shut down but the brain slips into coma for about 7 minutes then seeks for blood, if it doesn't get it. Death occurs.
