___________

For days, we kept going from places to places begging for food and money. Felix was very displeased with me in all through our journeys, he looked bitter and frequently swore never to forgive me till he have his revenge. We seeked refuge under bridges for almost two months and in those months, it was hell. Most times I dreamt of been chased by Wumi with a cutlass with deadly intent, or my father throwing me into the well. One night I dreamt Ajumoke was in pain in the labour room, she was finding it hard to deliver the baby and then cursed me before she died. I got scared, I cried and prayed for forgiveness but the nightmare got even worse, the thought of my death kept reoccurring to me and it got me terribly ill. Guilt was gradually eating me up, I had committed a great abomination, how could I had slept with my half-sister...I do deserve death. Ajumoke was the cause of it all, she was too clingy, she had lured me and I fell for it like a fool. I wish I could explain, but of what difference would that be.

I had to advice Felix that we relocate far from Lagos, I suggested we go back to Asaba to see mother but he refused and advice we go to someplace new and start life afresh. After another month of hiding within Lagos, we had gathered enough money to travel to Abuja, a place we believed our lives would turn out for good. Slowly, Felix and I had begun to get back our lives, we couldn’t go school but we but we started a small business of selling recharge card and snacks around Nyanya bus-stop. Two years later, the business kept growing and we had enough profit to afford a single room around Maraba. It was there we met Lilian a neighbor who stayed all alone in the room next to us; she was nice and soon feel in love with Felix. For months, she would come help us cook using her own money for everything, she became more than just a friend to us, she spent the night in our apartment and most time Felix goes to sleep in hers. All through they were together, Felix was happy and so was I too for him. His happiness and forgiveness was all I wanted.

One day, Lilian had us follow her to a party, it was in that same party I first came in contact with Jennifer. My encounter with Jennifer was like a scene from a romantic movie and so was it memorable for that was the same night we last saw Lilian. Felix told me that while he had come to hint me on how to get Jennifer, he went back and never saw her amongst the crowd. That night, we searched everywhere for Lilian but never found her or any trace of her. We asked around but were shocked on realizing no one in the gathering knew her, not even Jennifer whom Lilian claimed was her friend. Infact, we realized no one had invited her to the party.

The next day, we broke open into Lilian’s apartment and met it totally empty, her phone wasn’t going through, my brother and I searched for weeks. We never attempted to bring in the police into the case knowing how easy they could turn around for blames, Felix suggested we let it go and never speak of it. After about seven months of Lilian’s disappearance, on a Wednesday evening, my brother and I were seated under an umbrella where we sell recharge cards and snacks. Suddenly, we saw two military vans trailing a black tinted-glass armor jeep roughly halted in front of us. Soldiers jumped out in dozens and started flogging everyone around the vicinity. Many traders and pedestrians scattered away. Before I could figure out which direction to best escape, it was too late as I had been surrounded. I felt a hot pee flowing down my trousers while I stared into the strong faces forging towards me with long wipes. The soldiers all looked like they had come for a kill. From the tinted armored jeep appeared a man in a more decorative military outfit. He majestically walked up to me where I knelt trembling, he had a black shade on his eyes and held a walking staff. The other soldiers paved way for him to have access to me. I concluded he was the boss.

“Which of you is Felix?” the boss asked in a very stern tone. He looked deadly, I hinted myself of the implication of messing with his kind.

“Him sir” Felix voice quickly came to live as I turned to see him pointing towards me, It was then I realized he was also kneeling right behind me. I was stunned with my mouth wide open. Before I had the chance to deny my brother’s false identity upon me, heavy blows began to rain on every part of my body. The more I cried, the more kicks and blow I get, it went on and on like they wanted me to pass-out, and yes I finally did pass out, more like I died.

I opened my eyes to the realization I was suspended in the air with my hands banded with rope, as I had no cloth to clad my sweaty body. Every part of my body was swollen and arched in excruciating pain. I felt blood dripping from my mouth as I tried called for attention in the dark room. Suddenly, the door was flung open to a man who gently walked in, he turned to switch on the light before slowly closing the door behind him, the illumination was red and then I could see the figure majestically walked up to me in an air of desperate ease.

“You brother has confirmed it, he said it was you who impregnated her” the voice paused then soon came up again with a fiercer tone “is it true?”

I looked closely and saw it was the boss who led the soldiers to us, he wasn’t with his staff or dark shade, I could then see into his eyes and they were hot red, desperate and deadly. I felt a wave of fear rushed through me, I fear that was a sign of coming death. I decided I wasn’t going to lie so at least I would make heaven. I began to silently ask for God’s forgiveness…a quick penitent at that. Death was inevitable at that moment, I thought.

“Are you stupid” the man hit me so hard with his clenched fist and it was…

JEEZ!!... I THOUGHT I WAS HIT WITH A ROCKY OBJECT

“Is it true?” the man yelled again.

“Yes sir, It was me. I impregnated her, but I swear it was all a mistake” I cried out as I instinctively burst into tears, wimping remorsefully of my act with Ajumoke, I knew nemesis would catch up. I knew this day would come “I am sorry sir, forgive me sir”

“Shut up!” the voice barked angrily “So you had the guts to use this your stupid thing on my poor daughter” he was pointing directly at my exposed peniis

EHN? ABEG WAIT O, DON’T GET THINGS MIXED UP, WHICH GIRL ARE WE EVEN TALKING ABOUT HERE SIR?

I was confused and I was sure he saw the shocking look on me as he then asked if I was trying to deny my claim. Of course yes, I denied not knowing which girl he was talking about.

SEE ME O! I EVEN THOUGHT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT AJUMOKE

The old soldier made a wicked grin at me as he slowly drew out a pistol from his back waist

GHEN-GHEN…I HAF DIE.

My entire body completely froze and my eyes widen in complete lost and horror. He looked so determined to make good use of the tool in his hand.

“So you think I’m joking ehn? By the time I blow off your head…” he paused his sentence midway, he resumed “Now I will ask you for the last time, did you or did you not impreg…” before he finished the statement, I affirmed to the allegation, I told his I was responsible the pregnancy and that it was the devil that lured me, and that he should forgive me. I was already crying profusely with tears, mucus and sweat all dripping out of my body.

“Did you ever love her?” the man asked with the pistol still aimed at my head. I was confused, it dawned on me at that moment that any answer that comes out from my mouth could lead to my death as ii wasn’t sure who exactly we were even talking about. I decided to shake and nod my head simultaneously. I guess my indecicive action really got him pissed-off as he frowned and stared at me disgustingly. He kicked me in my stomach with his boot and I felt I would puke and die. “Are you stupid? I asked you a simple question. Did you ever love my daughter?” he yelled furiously.

JESUS! WHAT EXACTLY IS HAPPENING?…THIS MAN SURELY HAS MISTAKEN ME FOR SOMEONE ELSE. PLEASE I NEED A LAWYER!!!

I wanted to explain my innocence to what was going on but had to reconsider after seeing his deadly stare and the manner at which his finger kept playing around the trigger.

I burst into fresh tears as I cried out “More than my blood sister I loved her but she loved me moreeven though I never deserved it. She was kind and loving…I know I do not deserve her love, sir please forgive me” I kept on sobbing for a while when suddenly, the man matched out of the room and came back almost immediately with a baby wrapped in his alms. He brought the baby closer so I could see, the baby was still asleep but very pretty.

“It’s a girl” the man said calmly as he looked me in the eyes.

AND SO? WHAT’S MY BUSINESS WITH THAT?

“Just before she died” he said in a down tone “she wants you to give the baby a name”. The old soldier swallowed hard as he made the last statement.

NOW I AM COMFUSE, AS IN SUPER CONFUSE…HELLO MISTER SOLDIER, CAN’T YOU SEE YOU’VE GOT THE WRONG GUY HANGING?

I kept staring at the man blankly trying to say something to prove my innocence and yet try my best not to piss him off.

“Common, give the girl a name” he sounded impatient as he jerked the baby towards me, the baby now had a smile on her face even while asleep. She was sooooo beautiful, she was soooo….

“Marvelous…yes, she is Marvelous” I said on realizing her existence and connection to me was a marvel, it was unexplainable.
The old soldier fringed and looked puzzled like I had given the name of an animal, he shrugged carelessly then turned with the baby with the baby to leave, as he switched off the light and opened the door to step out, I unexplainably summoned courage to ask who exactly he was. He halted, slowly turned to me and revealed “I am retired General Umar Danbaba, and I am Memunat’s father”.

After a week in the solitary confinement in an army barrack with little food and water for six months. I was eventually released a changed man, yes for I was close to death in every sphere of me. I cried knowing I had suffered for another man’s crime. General Umar had me treated in a military hospital for five days as I had already lost my mind, lost my body and as I had later found out, he woundn’t want me to lose my life. The general accommodated me, fed me, clothed me and made sure I was in a better shape again.

“You were lucky, you know I initially wanted to have you terminated” General Umar spoke up after a long penetrating stare at me. He had earlier called me to his luxurious parlor for a discussion. His facials made his words undoubted and even made me feel he might still have a change of mind if I stare into his eyes any longer. “But I had to honor the wishes of my late daughter whose love for you was all that made her happy after she returned” he continued and went on to inform me of his proposed journey outside the country. He wanted to have Marvelous along with him abroad permanently and also handling to me his entire property within Nigeria. I was extremely happy. He can keep Marvelous for all I care.

Everything I had ever wanted fell on me just like that.

GUYS LET ME TELL YOU WHAT I DISCOVERED WITHIN MY SHORT STAY WITH GENERAL UMAR PRIOR TO HIS TRAVELLING…This man had married Memunat’s mum who died of sickle cell anemia shortly after birth. Father got too protective of his only daughter who also had sickle cell anemia as well. His over protectiveness for his only daughter got the daughter uncomfortable and as well unknowingly depriving her of the social life she craved. At 21 years of age, poor Memunat wanted fun and as well craved for adventure so badly that the 300-level student of law had to flee far away from her father in Kaduna. As soon as she got to Abuja, she hides herself under a new identity of a different look, personality with the name Lilian. She got the love and adventure she wanted from two young men living next door to her apartment, then suddenly disappeared back to Kaduna. I guessed she told her father about the newly found love, all the escapades, about her pregnancy…bla bla bla and bla. I sensed Memunat had insisted on keeping the pregnancy even against her father’s wish. I heard she died shortly after child birth but had earlier made her father promised her to find Felix, make him give the child a name and make him into a man worthy of his daughter...FOR CHRIST SAKE, WHO DOES THAT IF NOT A GIRL WITH A HEART SOAKED IN BOILING RIVER OF LOVE.

About three months after General Umar and Marvelous travelled out of the country, I got back with Jennifer whom I had bumped into. Wait, I think she was the one who bumped into me. We instantly rekindled the love from the past and solidified it through marriage after a year. It was on my wedding night, I had rushed to go open for a knock at the door. I saw shocked to see Felix standing out there inside the rain, staring into my eyes furiously. It made me remembered the first time I ever met him.

“Where is my daughter?” Felix shouted demandingly.

I ignored his rudeness by putting on a welcoming smile but he kept shouting in downright incivility. I walked up to him and try to embraces him but he pushed me away roughly that I almost fell. I wanted to tell him how I had went in search of him but he was never found, he had relocated and changed his phone number but he kept on demanding for his daughter and threatened to have me killed but I ignored as I pretended to not knowing what he was talking about.

“Don’t give me that look” he waved me away “I know you know what I am talking. I heard you exchanged my daughter for all this wealth” he shouted as he yanked me a disdain look.

“Honey what is it?” I heard Jennifer’s voice approaching from behind, I instructed her to go back into the room immediately. I feared the worst with Felix presence at that moment, he can be violent and rough, but it was too late. Jennifer was already behind me in her skimpy gown, one that leaves almost nothing for imagination, she was prepared for sex that night and had come summoned me to action.

“Wow wow wow!! And who do we have here” exclaimed Felix with a genuine smile as he licked his lips, he looked excited for a moment as he kept his brimming gaze on Jennifer then frowned at me. “You even got yourself a woman, I see!!” he nodded his head scornfully as he slowly clapped his hands in despise gesture. Suddenly, he pointed his fingers at me with a frown to go with and said slowly “I swear to God, I Felix Aguda will take back from you all that belongs to me, go mark my words” he spit on my foot, turned around and walked away into the rain and out of my compound.

“Who is he?” Jennifer asked still standing there behind me.

“That’s Felix Aguda, he was once my brother”

The thunder immediately struck, accompanied with a flash of lightning like they had corroborated for a graphical effect to my anger.
