Something similar happened in my company on two occassions. My response was based on the reaction of my staff. One first occassion, a customer got involved with my staff over the increase in our charges, she was calm and tried explaining as i watched from my office, he got annoyed as she had refused to let go of his clothes, he slapped her, she was still calm, holding her cheek. Impressed, I called the police on him and made it clear to all around, that my staffs are my biggest asset, I also added something to her pay. On the second occasion, the man was rude, i must confess but my staff shouldnt be. She got engaged in word war with our customer, thats an insane thing to do. She got sacked, without a second thought.

In Nigeria, customers are not always right. Many of them are just out to frustrate you. You as the employee has the right to defend yourself too. A customer who did not hesitate to slap you twice simply for doing your job doesn't deserve your respect. You have your own dignity to protect too and I love the fact that you defended yourself.

So sorry you had to resign. Better one ahead.
Hope you have some savings to sustain you till another one comes though.
The sense in your head is bigger than Mount Everest. You are too much.

It is very true. A customer should be treated as a King. Though some of them might be very troublesome. The basic thing is to understand your customer and what they are looking for in your products or services.

Some customers are not sane... Ever heard the word many are mad but few are roaming?
Having worked in different sales outlets and service rendering I can say that...some customers are nightmarish and should be avoided.. Its a pity employees get punished for some situation beyond there control...
Lemme give an example someone come to your firm take a sealed product bargain price and ask you to test it...you insist on payment before u open the product as that is the coy policy she start insulting u that u are disrespecting her or calling her a pauper, u keep mute waiting for her to pay up next thing she slaps you for wasting her time... What do you do?

Another customer count money for a product ask you to test the product you break the seal, open accessories inside and test , they he says he don't fancy the colour. What will u do? No body will buy a new product with broken seal..is the customer right in these instances because these n more are what we experience in my line of work

Chai... this one is much ooo. grin
But don't these commenters reason?

Somebody's wife/husband/mother/father will slap another's because they want to buy a product?

Ha!!!

I just pray God blesses me the way I want it. Even seeing my fiancee struggle for public bus and pushed here and there makes me uncomfortable, then someone would come and slap her because she is an employee?
Don't mind them, they were blabbing rubbish because it wasn't their mothet/father/wife /husband that was slapped. Selfish and inconsiderate people.

A very troublesome customer who had once walked away with my company's money after making purchase came to make another purchases again at my workplace few days ago.He gave me two hot slap simply because I demanded for payment before service.I retaliated by giving him a blow in his mouth. And the management queried me for retaliating. They said customers are always right.Dont I,as a staff have right too?My grievance with all this employers is that when a customer walk away with their money, the employer will not say the customer is right for running away with payment. They will quickly deduct the money from the staff salary at the end of the month. But,when a staff argue with a customer who refuse to pay after service, they will say customers are always right. They can even fine such staff.Well,i have resign sha.
A Ghanian artiste gave his bodyguard a hot slap on stage not too long ago. Guess what, the bodyguard didn't retaliate. Even if he strangle the silly artiste later, he is a top gun!
If I have my way, I will recruit such a character.

the slapper is a customer to the slappee
the slappee is a customer to another person
everybody is a customer one way or the other

The question is, are you always right?

You could sue the customer and the company if you had not hit him back.

You were queried for defending yourself? You should have given the idiotic customer the Undertaker/Randy Orton's finishing move.
Customer is always right indeed.

Customers are not always right. The thing is that everyone wants to be right n important. So we use that fact to our advantage when dealing with customers. So that way, in their mind, they are right. Retaliating wasn't the best thing to do. I will recommend a book on human relationship- How to win friends and influence people by Dale Carnegie. It talks exhaustively on this issue and how to avoid it.Get it!!

Resigning is actually not the best thing. What happens in your next job when such incident plays out again? You can't keep resigning.
Thank you, my dear. The poster doesn't know that the slaps he received is also why he's been paid at the end of the month.

I did not have time to read everything. I have just one question for the marketing and sales school of thought. Supposing that slap killed him, will d company or customer be liable for his death? At least in the Nigerian context.

After he gave him two hot slaps ?
chrisbaxtian:

you were very wrong! you should not have assaulted the customer in retaliation. The customer is NOT always right, but you should NEVER disrespect, victimise or assault your customers. Treat the customer as if they are right

He resigned because it wasn't his business. If he continues like this,he will keep jumping from one job to the other. If he starts up his own business,he will equally be redundant for life.Whether you like it or not, customers are always right.Devise a strategy to treat those frustrated customers whether it is your business or not.

The customer is not always right. If you read some of the stories people tell on notalwaysright.com you'll see what I'm talking about.

Working in American retail is hell.

Edit: The website doesn't seem to work anymore, at least for me. The stories there were quite interesting.

They are always right in private establishments. You can even go to some banks and start yelling at their customer care representative without any provocation and at the end of the day, the manager will come out to pacify you. I have witnessed this a couple of times.

Customers will come to the bank, jump queue, mount pressure on you, and when you try to maintain law and order (because other customers will be aggrieved), they start yelling to attract the attention of your supervisor.
And your supervisor will admonish you and tell you all those crap about the possibility of the customer having a bad day. Nobody cares if you are having a bad day yourself.

Go to a govt establishment and talk anyhow let's see if you will be attended to. It is only when we visit any govt office that we wear the full regalia of humility. Because nobody send you to go do anyhow for there.

As goat stand, na so them go price am. When you make yourself an ass, everyone will ride you.
