It was indeed a sad day for the people of Buraimoh Street in the Bariga area of Lagos State on Wednesday, December 6 as a fire outbreak claimed the lives of an entire family.

The victims which included a pastor by the name of Kenneth Eze, his wife and their two kids were said to have been sleeping in the church when a power surge triggered a fire that trapped them inside the building and eventually led to their death.
Kenneth who was said to be the head pastor in charge of World Harvest Ministry in the Gbagada area of the state had earlier moved his family into the shop where they sold provisions and medicines. According to sources, he could not afford to pay the rent of his previous apartment due to the condition of his wife who had an illness caused by two cesarean births and had been bedridden for a while.

According to PUNCH, correspondents gathered from witnesses that the Ikeja Electric restored power around 2am, which allegedly triggered off the fire in the shop. The victims were trapped and couldn't get out as a result of the two-level security burglar proof at the entrance of the shop and its extension, leading to their death.

Officials of the Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and policemen from the Bariga division, were said to have responded to the emergency.

Speaking on the issue, the Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe, said the agency received a distress call around 2.48am, of which the Alausa and Ilupeju fire divisions responded. He further advice people not to turn their houses into prisons as he made reference to how difficult it was for the fire fighters to get into the burning house due to the burglar proof bars.

He said the cause of the fire incident had yet to be established, adding that investigations were ongoing. The body of the victims have since been taken to the village by relatives for burial.

Very sad situation. Considering the transient nature of life, situations like this calls for sober reflection. May their souls rest in peace. That Eze's head though.
