Architecture is defined simply as the art and science of designing and erecting Buildings or any other structure. An architect is the professional trained to provide the services as may be required in Architecture. He however does that in Collaborations with other allied professionals. The architect receives his/her payment for services rendered as fees. Further more the Architect is required to come up with an acceptable sketch in design before he is entitled to receive a certain percentage of his fees. That is where the 'game' between the Architect and the client starts.A client may decide to discontinue with the project based one reason or the other without parting with a dime in fees to the architect.Nevertheless, the practice of architecture as it should be stipulates that the architect be given a 'letter of commission' by the client before he/she starts putting pencil to paper. Most Architects that are fresh in the practice do not have the experience required to weather through the storm in such issues. This has become the clog in the wheel of progress of some them. The design and build option for survival has not helped matters either because of the stiff competition from the so called developers common in the construction industry these days. In the tripod of professional practice, getting paid is the hardest, followed by getting the job while doing it is the least.Success in the profession needs proper understanding and application of the ethics. It is advisable for fresh graduate of architecture to acquire much needed skills from those experienced enough in the industry and also invest in the relevant Literature to succeed in this noble profession.God himself is the first Architect and that alone makes the profession an edible one indeed.
THE ROLE OF AN ARCHITECT IN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY.
I have gone through some submissions on the above and wish to add my voice for clarity. If you a fresh graduate of Architecture or you are an architect without much knowledge on professional practice, it is important that you go through this piece.
The Architect by training is the leader in any Building site. The bulk stops at his table. The Project Manager or project engineer can not assume the role of an architect except if he/she is an architect. All site meetings are chaired by the architect. This confusion about the role of an architect is as a result of the advent of design and build. However the traditional role of the Architect has not changed within the confines of the standard form for building contract. The attached book titled THE ARCHITECT AND THE CLIENT is recommended for further reading so as understand the dynamics of the roles of all the professionals in the construction industry and how to deal with the client as an architect for success. The e copy of this book can be obtained via email : charlesdirioha@gmail or 08037140188
