Activities at the State Specialist Hospital, Benin City have been temporarily paralysed as a result of incessant armed robbery attacks on the hospital, NEXT has gathered.

Some wards in the hospital have been visited on several occasions by armed robbers, who unleash terror on the patients and medical workers on duty.

The children ward has been a particularly regular target of the armed men.

The latest attack, carried out at the weekend, was directed at the maternity ward and labour room.

Sources say the suspected armed robbers, numbering about 10, broke into the maternity ward through a back door at about 1.20am and conducted a bed to bed search for cash and handsets from those on admission.

Not satisfied with their loot, the armed men allegedly headed to the labour room where some women were said to be in labour. They did not spare them either.

A witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the women scampered for safety; with some reportedly taking refuge in the toilet while others ran out of the room naked.

Having had a field day, the armed bandits repeated their visit to the same ward the following night unchallenged - and they successfully operated and disposed their victims of money, handsets and other valuables.

At present, the hospital runs skeletal service. Its night shift has been put on hold for fear of a repeat of the ugly incident.

Fear of rape

A nurse, who also did not want her name in print, expressed fear of her colleagues that the evil men might one day descend on them and rape them.

The Edo State Commissioner for Health, Moses Momoh, speaking during a telephone interview, condemned the incident and said that it was capable of worsening the health conditions of patients in the hospital.

Mr. Momoh said the poor security at the hospital is due to an ongoing road construction which makes policing of the premises difficult.

He said the Director of Hospital Services have been directed to get police protection for the premises.

Phone calls to the public relations officer of the state police command, Peter Ogboi, were not answered.

Despicable creatures from the abyss who shall surely meet their waterloo on an appointed day. When they steal the money they use it on love-peddlers, drugs and alcohol. What low lives!

The authorities cannot even protect the hospitals not to mention women in labour.

Where is the police? Where is the state Government? In fact is there a government at all in Nigeria?

Nigeria is a Sham and disgrace to the International community.  Hopefully this new regime will make a difference.

A country blessed with immeasurable wealth and yet no proper investment in the security personnel. They live in shambolic barracks, get paid shocking wages and yet are required to put their lives on the line?

Shame and a big shame to all the pot bellied thieves leaders in Nigeria!!  angry

God help us.

My brother like you i am astounded. Was left speechless after reading this.
Even Aldolf Hitler would cringe when he sees atrocities being committed by some Nigerians.
How can someone attack a woman in Labour, in pains. Traumatizing a mother and an unborn baby already in truama. This happened, not once but on 2 consecutive days.
I weep for Nigeria.

well this is a situation where by the robbers are now comming to terms with the word**Gone are the days when you can go to people's home and find huge sum of money indoors*Now they are getting despirate and aiming at soft targets, but come to think of it, howmuch are they gonna get from robbing Hospital inmates eh?I wonder what is going to happen if the GSM providers in 9ja addopt the technique employed in the western world to block stollen phones, then I presu,e it would be useless Biz stealing phones, cos thats what they are all after now!

The Nigerian Police Farce (NPF) are at the moment conducting series of thorough 'investigations' and have successfully arrested 2000 'suspects' who are at the moment providing 'useful information' about the robbery attacks. Members of the public are adviced by The Farce to go about their normal businesses as everything is 'under control'. From The Police Farce PRO.

There is no report that any of these things were stolen. Sources on ground said they were only after money and similar items. So please no let your imagination run too wild.

I can understand your anger and frustration my guy. The government in Edo state is over-hyped. They are as selfish as their predecessors in the PDP.

This is an Oshiomhole who budgetted TWO BILLION NAIRA separately this years as security money for the state. Yet no time in history have criminals been as rampant and dare-devilled. The only improved security we have seen is around the governor and his family/AC members.
