Akwa Ibom State Emergency Medical Service To Be Established In 2018 by Blue3k(m): 12:16am On Jan 03, 2018
The State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Udom Emmanuel has given an approval for the establishment of Akwa Ibom State Emergency Medical Service to cater for traumatic cases.

The Emergency Medical Service is to be accompanied with ambulances and Closed Circuit Television, CCTV Cameras mounted at strategic locations and connected to a Nerves Center built in Uyo for 24 hours monitoring of trauma cases for urgent medical care.

The trained personnel at the Nerves Center, after identifying a traumatic situation such as; accident scenes, drowning, fall from high and kerosene explosion among others, will send signals to quick response group, ambulance or team for immediate help.

According to the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Dominic Ukpong who announced this to Government House Correspondents at the Governor’s Office, Uyo shortly after the State Executive Council meeting, the planned Emergency Medical Service will be working in collaboration with other segments of emergency response outfits like the Fire Service and the Nigeria Police.

Dr Ukpong noted that in Nigeria, including Akwa Ibom State, about fifty percent of the people involved in trauma die due to lack of immediate medical attention
.

He further explained the workings of the envisaged medical service and stated that though it was expensive to establish, Governor Emmanuel has resolved to get it established in order to save lives.

Part of the programme involves the training of personnel on basic resuscitation measures before victims are moved to major health facilities for adequate medical attention.

The Emergency Medical Service, according to the Commissioner, is to purchase ambulances and set up models of the service in ten places at the initial stage.

The initiative, billed to start next year will be a standard international center at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.

Speaking on other health related issues, the Commissioner assured the people that the Ibom Specialist Hospital which has started skeletal services will soon be taken over by a new consortium that is expected to manage it up to the standard envisaged for the institution.

He told Reporters that the state government was undertaking the rehabilitation of Methodist Hospital, Ituk Mbang after which the General Hospital, Oron will be attended to.

Also speaking,  the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Mr Victor Antai thanked the Governor for giving particular attention to the tourism sub sector in Akwa Ibom explaining that his Ministry is merely interpreting the vision of Governor Udom Emmanuel.

Mr Antai who was earlier commended by the Governor for his creative ingenuity in the Ministry of Culture and Tourism said apart from the Arts Exhibition and Orange September, Ukapisua, which featured streets groove and the Ibeno beach fiesta, was just one of the programmes designed to make Akwa Ibom State a tourist’s destination.

The Commissioner spoke about the multiplier effects of the event he described as very successful, stating that it is pertinent to build upon it.

Earlier,  the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Charles Udoh had set the tone for the Press Briefing by saying that the last State Executive Council meeting for 2017 was necessary to review the performance of government in the outgoing year and begin to signpost some of the things expected in the new year.

The Information Boss said that the meeting started off with the Governor commending the creative initiative the Ministry of Culture and Tourism has brought to bear over the course of the year saying that it is about the best era of the Ministry since the state was created.

Mr Charles Udoh stated that key among the issues discussed was the approval for the establishment of Akwa Ibom State Emergency Medical Service.

This seems like a pretty good initiative by the governor. It should she expanded to rest of state as soon as possible. The Emergency service system is working with police and fire department so is it similar to 911 service? If it isn't just copy Lagos with 112.

Akwa ibom are blessed with human administrators. The deserve to be independent. They are enviously moulding their environments while others are moulding status , changing street names and construction of substandard/ uncompleted infrastructures.

This is a clear example why projects failed in Nigeria
For any project, everything is lumped together

The state should establish an agency for provision and maintenance of CCTV in the state which can then provide services to other agencies of government including security and medical outfits.

All these bogus money lumped into such project creates avenue for mismanagement

Emergency services taking patients to where?

Akpabio built an empty hall and called it an international hospital. At least, let this present Governor equip and staff the place.

my state my state.
we know that in this our state, if something happens to anyone, they take him to church first, and after when they are almost dead, they now start trotting in search of hospital.

Father Udom, if you could help in anyway to at least create some factories as you promised, to help us find work... we will have the confidence to think of good healthcare.. because as of now... all we think of now, is how to save as much money or how to find money for the next meal.

It is not Udom's responsibility to 'create factories'. That is private investors' responsibilities. Udom's job is to create the enabling environment, something he has not done.

@Post, When the Ibom Specialist Hospital restarts, then I can believe this initiative.

please next time don't mention Udom and Ambode in the same sentence. Ambode is in Premiership while Udom is still learning what a football is. Udom's intellectual capacity is very low even for a councillorship position.
