Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, on Wednesday said that the Itakpe- Ajaokuta-Warri standard gauge rail lines would begin commercial activities in August. The Minister told pressmen in Abuja that the ministry is meticulously working hard to ensure that the rail lines commence functionality. The former Rivers Governor said the ministry is expecting seven coaches to arrive the country on January 11 for the rail transport. He said “the Federal Government hope to complete the Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Warri, Lagos- Ibadan, Lagos-Kano, as well as the Lagos- Port Harcourt standard gauge line before December” On the current challenges facing the ministry, Amaechi said that the Lagos- Ibadan rail line is having troubles due to water pipes, sewer pipes and gas pipes across the rail corridor, which needs to be eliminated. He promised to meet with the Lagos State Government and brainstorm on how the challenges can be addressed and propell the progress of the work. He added that the government has approved the extension of the rail line up to Niger Republic to end the transportation hurdles involved in the importation of goods.
