All Banks Ordered To Open 7.6 Million New Accounts By CBN by theJournalng(m): 8:32pm On Jan 11, 2018
All Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) in the
country have been ordered by the Central
Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to register new
7,608,180 savings accounts to meet the
Central Banks’s financial inclusion target.
All financial institutions in the states and the
Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were given
various targets.
Although the highest targets were given to
banks in Lagos with 2,293,080, while Abuja
banks are to attract 153,000 savings
account customers.
Mrs. Elizabeth O. Agu, the CBN Abuja Branch
Controller, stated this during the
inauguration of Financial Inclusion States’
Steering Committee (FISSCO).
She said that all DMB and Microfinance
banks in the FCT have received an order by
the apex bank to attract a minimum of
1,500 and 2,500 new savings customers
respectively in 2018.
Mrs. Elizabeth also confirmed that the CBN
has instigated the review of the strategy
document for achieving required levels of
financial inclusion in the country.
She said; “By 2020, the CBN is aiming at
20% adult exclusion from financial
services.”
