LAUTECH CRISIS The crisis that rocked LAUTECH was big in 2017 as Students were severally stranded for Months due to the Disagreement between workers of the University and Owner States. The crisis was one of the moments in Nigerian Education that was really controversial and won't be forgotten in a hurry. Igbonla Kidnap On May 25, 2017, days before May 27 which fell on the Children's day celebration, another version of the infamous Chibok girls tragedy played out in Lagos as kidnappers stormed Igbonla Model College » , Epe and abducted six boys from the school. It was definitely a devastating experience for the six students as their captors imprisoned them for two months before releasing them on Friday, July 28 after demanding a ransom of N400m from their Parents. Kaduna Teacher's Competency Test In 2017,the Governor of Kaduna state decided to test the Competency of Teachers across the state, this caused issues as 21,780 Teachers were said to be incompetent after the test was carried out with the state Governor, El-Rufai Nasir announcing that 25000 Teachers will be employed in place of the sacked Teachers. THE Nigerian Labour Congress disagreed with the released scripts stating that they were ridiculous. The Disagreements definitely will remain fresh as it spilled into 2018. JAMB Cut-off Mark In 2017 when you hear of arguments emanating from the decision to peg University cutoff mark at 120,they were very hilarious with several figures including the Vice Chancellor of University of Ibadan, Professor Idowu Olayinka amongst other Vice Chancellors kicking against the Cutoff mark. JAMB Registrar Ishaq Oloyede although came out to clear the air on the marks, stating that Universities are free to set their own cutoff marks but the moments formed the biggest of 2017 Ojo Aderemi/UI Students Union Saga Anyone who followed happenings in the Nigerian Education sector will agree that the crisis in University of Ibadan was really huge as at then as there were Disagreement between the University of Ibadan Vice Chancellor and the then students Union President, Ojo Aderemi. The issues remain fresh but cap the biggest moments of Nigerian Education sector albeit on the controversial side in 2017 More varsities The federal government through the National Universities Commission (NUC) approved the establishment of 12 more universities – state and private. The action elicited mixed reactions as some stakeholders backed the establishment of more universities to cater for numerous candidates seeking admission. Others said it was not necessary, particularly the states that have the presence of federal university and also states establishing additional universities when the existing ones are underfunded. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) described the establishment of new state universities by the Ogun and Oyo state governments as bad politics when the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago- Iwoye and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso are struggling for survival with mounting arrears of salaries, allowances and other staff entitlements. https://educationherald.com.ng/six-events-rocked-nigerian-education-2017/ |
