LAUTECH CRISIS

The crisis that rocked LAUTECH was big in 2017 as Students were severally stranded for Months due to the Disagreement between workers of the University and Owner States.

The crisis was one of the moments in Nigerian Education that was really controversial and won't be forgotten in a hurry.


Igbonla Kidnap


On May 25, 2017, days before May 27 which fell on the Children's day
celebration, another version of the infamous Chibok girls
tragedy played out in Lagos as kidnappers stormed
Igbonla Model College » , Epe and abducted six boys from
the school.
It was definitely a devastating experience for the six
students as their captors imprisoned them for two months
before releasing them on Friday, July 28 after demanding a
ransom of N400m from their Parents.

Kaduna Teacher's Competency Test

In 2017,the Governor of Kaduna state decided to test the Competency of Teachers across the state, this caused issues as 21,780 Teachers were said to be incompetent after the test was carried out with the state Governor, El-Rufai Nasir announcing that 25000 Teachers will be employed in place of the sacked Teachers. THE Nigerian Labour Congress disagreed with the released scripts stating that they were ridiculous.
The Disagreements definitely will remain fresh as it spilled into 2018.

JAMB Cut-off Mark

In 2017 when you hear of arguments emanating from the decision to peg University cutoff mark at 120,they were very hilarious with several figures including the Vice Chancellor of University of Ibadan, Professor Idowu Olayinka amongst other Vice Chancellors kicking against the Cutoff mark. JAMB Registrar Ishaq Oloyede although came out to clear the air on the marks, stating that Universities are free to set their own cutoff marks but the moments formed the biggest of 2017


Ojo Aderemi/UI Students Union Saga

Anyone who followed happenings in the Nigerian Education sector will agree that the crisis in University of Ibadan was really huge as at then as there were Disagreement between the University of Ibadan Vice Chancellor and the then students Union President, Ojo Aderemi.

The issues remain fresh but cap the biggest moments of Nigerian Education sector albeit on the controversial side in 2017


More varsities
The federal government through the
National Universities Commission (NUC)
approved the establishment of 12 more
universities – state and private. The action
elicited mixed reactions as some
stakeholders backed the establishment of
more universities to cater for numerous
candidates seeking admission. Others said
it was not necessary, particularly the states
that have the presence of federal university
and also states establishing additional
universities when the existing ones are
underfunded.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities
(ASUU) described the establishment of new
state universities by the Ogun and Oyo state
governments as bad politics when the
Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-
Iwoye and Ladoke Akintola University of
Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso are
struggling for survival with mounting arrears
of salaries, allowances and other staff
entitlements.
