The sentence is open to dual interpretation both of which are grammatical. It permits both drunk-mother meaning and drunk-daughter interpretation. This type of expression supports the claim by linguists that syntactic constituents are capable of movement which permits the upstairs and downstairs reading.

The mother is drunk.
If it was to be the daughter, the write will probably put it this way; A mother beat up her daughter for being drunk.
Re: A Mother Beats Up Her Daughter Because She Was Drunk: Who Was Drunk? by NaMe4: 8:51am On May 29, 2018
The daughter was drunk. That was the reason she got beaten by her mother.

Same as:
A mother beats up her daughter because she stole 1m Naira.

The conjunction 'because' precedes the reason for the action in the earlier phrase - A Mother beats up her daughter.

The mother happens to be the subject in the sentence. So "she", in this case without specifying if either mother or daughter, will have to represent the subject of the sentence, the Mother.

A simple coma would have made this easy. No one speaks the way they write, the answer lies where one pauses when speaking.

a mother beats UP her daughter because she was drunk
it's the mother that was drunk.
if it was
a mother beats her daughter because she was drunk. then in this context the daughter was drunk.

It's the mother who is drunk! The "because" in the sentence gave us reason to why she beat her daughter.

If it were to be the daughter that's drunk, it would have simply been written "A mother beats up her drunk daughter" #simple

RadicallyBlunt:

If it was d mother, it would be;

A drunken mother beats up her daughter.

I can as well say...
If it was d daughter, it would be;
A mother beats up her drunken daughter.

Fact is with just that one sentence, we cannot tell who was really drunk.
Re: A Mother Beats Up Her Daughter Because She Was Drunk: Who Was Drunk? by vincentjk(m): 12:18pm On May 29, 2018
The daughter was drunk not the mother
Re: A Mother Beats Up Her Daughter Because She Was Drunk: Who Was Drunk? by BlackHatNaija: 12:21pm On May 29, 2018
It's the mother that was drunk!
In another words the act of drunkenness made her beat up her daughter.

Please all English gurus, who is drunk?

Answer with a profound prove and explanation.
The statement does not make sense. Why? It is ambiguous and ambiguity leads to vagueness.

Example;

1. Why did the mother beat up her child? Because she was drunk. (Who was??)
Implied: A. The mother beat up her child because she (her child) was drunk.
B. The mother beat up her child because she (herself) was drunk.

A statement that can be interpreted either ways in English language is vague (owing to ambiguity) as there are no specifics. This one is useless.

Simple........ A mother beats up her daughter because the former was drunk or A mother beats up her daughter because the latter was drunk

It depends on the context of usage...the event from the beginning of the article.

But regardless of the preceding event, I'll say its d daughter. If it was d mother it would be:

A drunken mother beats up her daughter.
Then you could also say "a mother beats up her drunken daughter."
Re: A Mother Beats Up Her Daughter Because She Was Drunk: Who Was Drunk? by lexy2014: 12:32pm On May 29, 2018
ogorwyne:
This is an ambiguous statement. Both are females, and the 'she' could be any of the two. Only the writer can tell us who was drunk.

But my common sense is telling me that the drunk fellow is the daughter.
maybe d writer of d statement is also drunk

It's the daughter

If it was the mother, the write sentence would be

A mother beats up her daughter, because she was drunk.

Yes the Daughter I concur but the right sentence:
A mother beats up her daughter BECAUSE, she was drunk

Lol.

From the statement, it is impossible to say which of the two females is drunk.

To make it explicit, you write it this way,

A mother beats up her daughter because she (mother) was drunk.

Or

A mother beats up her daughter because she (daughter) was drunk.

you're a bloody mooooooslim terrorist. you'd better stopped fasting and start drinking your regular burukutu mixed with soured kunu because your prayers won't get beyond your roofs.

back to the question, how could you tell it wasn't the mother that was drunk and not the daughter.

please no insults...i'm enjoying my holiday and i'm kind of high on heineken.
