This arguments are all baseless.I wonder what some u guys here would do if you were in jonathans shoes. We all want constructive criticism not grammatical criticism. How does jonathans level of spoken english affect us directly?? please answer? We should all look at what he has to offer nigeria rather than his level of spoken english. |

^^^ True that. We seems to pay attention to what never matters more than what matters |

Jonathan speaks ôgbû! His accent is not the problem but incomplete sentences and several grammatical errors. It's a shame, though I know it's not a measure of his reasoning or judgement, but it's still a shame. ÔGBÛ is deafening! |
Re: Acting President Goodluck Jonathan And His Too Many Grammatical Errors by Fhemmmy: 4:26pm On Apr 15, 2010 |
Could be a shame, however, as long as he could perform, wont even bother. There are many nations with presidents that cant even say a sentence in English. |

We have English as our language of instruction right from kindergarten to university. In addition, English is our official language. |
Re: Acting President Goodluck Jonathan And His Too Many Grammatical Errors by Fhemmmy: 4:32pm On Apr 15, 2010 |
006: English is the official language, but not his mother tongue, would be nice to have a leader that is fluent in english, but let us not judge him based on hi language skill |
Re: Acting President Goodluck Jonathan And His Too Many Grammatical Errors by Nobody: 4:39pm On Apr 15, 2010 |
Some of you are saying english is his official language. Now tell me, how many Nigerian |Graduates can speeak fluent english devoid of errors and grammatical blunder.? He is the product of the nigerian educational system and his teachers were not perfect in english language. Even some nigerians studying oversees, can not speak english as good as jonathan does. We really need to move forward in this nation. and stop all this bashing and accusations plzz. |
Re: Acting President Goodluck Jonathan And His Too Many Grammatical Errors by Fhemmmy: 4:45pm On Apr 15, 2010 |
luizworld: With all that you have said, does that made it right? So now we are all justified that we have an educational system where the grads cant speak good english? |
Re: Acting President Goodluck Jonathan And His Too Many Grammatical Errors by 006(m): 4:47pm On Apr 15, 2010 |
luizworld: It’s not a matter of bashing, he has held political positions before so should be comfortable using the language. I know a guy that used to speak ôgbû but suddenly improved tremendously after he was elected his department’s sec. gen. So he knew what it entails to speak correct or near correct English. Remember, GJ used very short sentences in the interview, yet there were several grammatical errors and incomplete sentences which his shocking. |

English is an official Language but not the language of reasoning in Nigeria. The people who believe that making English language an official language are just naive and have inferiority complex. Why on earth should we as a society, whose population is more than that of Britain, make English our official language. The fact that these people subjugated for years is enough for us to discard that toga of slavery, some are still wearing it. Even in UK here, they recognise language barrier to the extend they translate many official documents to other languages (most of which are foreign). In UK it is not a crime not to speak English, rather they can even get you an interpreter. However, in our enslaved society, people that do not speak English, common pidgin English are considered inferior and are a subject of mockery. Nigerians should begin to discard this toga of slavery. |

Arkison: Till that time comes, he should try to speak correct English or near correct English. Even English speakers themselves don’t speak correct English sometimes but near perfect English is acceptable. |

Once upon a time everything wrong about Yar'adua as a leader was once what made him one of us Nigerians. We celebrate mediocre leaders when they rise or are rising to power but turn around to make noise when they eventually fail. You need to criticise your leaders to keep them honest, they need criticism to strive for something better than what they met. But folks will not tolerate any criticism of their darling Goodluck Jonathan. With an attitude like this our leaders will continue to fail. |

JT for President 2011. I like his temperament. It’s always lacking in most leaders and can affect one’s judgment. |

Way down the Niger Delta close to New Warri Out in the woods among the ever greens There stood a log cabin made of earth and wood Where lived a young man named Johnny B Good He never learned to read or write so well But he fixed up Nigeria just like a ringing a bell Go ! Go ! Go Johnny go ! Go ! Go ! Go Johnny go! Johnny Goodluck Apologies to Chuck Berry |

006: I agree. That is a major plus in his arsenal, if not for it, Nigeria would still be crippled by the cabal (who would have morphed into an evil military dictatorship). An even temperament will most times, provide balanced actions and replies. I recall a certain incident, when shortly after he was made Acting President, some adventurous dude blocked jonathans motorcade with his car. . . he was quietly charged to court! Not killed or beaten as would have been in the past! That’s the sort of thing we should be encouraging in Nigeria. After years of command mentality that only stresses us up and drags us back, Jonathan is showing a new way that is much more effective. |

Fhemmmy:A president should dress in an Official manner which is putting on Suits not wearing a Cowboy's hat. and a dull-Coloured Sutan, he looks like a Comedian instead of a president. And did you see the way he was sitting while speaking with Obama, he sat with his legs spread out like a woman slicing Cocoyam in the village.;D |

Seems some people are desperate to dodge the facts of the matter. - Jonathan appears to have a weak command of English. - So therefore he's likely to have poor reading skills. - If he has deficiencies in reading and writing, is he the best person to be representing Nigeria? - For example, if he's asked to sign a Nuclear treaty, would he understand the document? - Therefore we must ask - Does Jonathan's deficiencies pose any risk to Nigerians? - What if for example Jonathan is taken advantage of by a smarter, sharper individual (e.g Obama?) - Its me and you that would suffer - Not Jonathan. - People who have strong reading and writing skills also tend to be good speakers. The have larger vocabularies! |

^ My friend, your analysis is deeply flawed. There are two sides of the brain, one side is good with languages, the other is analytical. An easy example to observe is that those who are the best at math, tend to struggle with language; while those who are good with language tend to struggle with math. You see it in every school. You can observe similar traits between left and right handed people. The side of the brain you are best with, has absolutely nothing to do with reading skills. It is easy to see that Jonathan has an analytical brain. That is what is best for Nigeria in my opinion; analyse and solve our problems, not go from country to country speaking English (which is not even our language). |

I wonder why Nigerians are quick to celebrate their leaders after just a few months in office, without a practical appraisal system to access their performances. Jonathan even said he has achieved nothing yet, so Nigerians should stop singing his praises to high heavens. Power supply has improved within the last 2 months according to Nairalanders, is it being sustained? or is it just a cosmetic approach we are seeing? We need to give this Man enough time before we start praising Him, as far as I am concerned He has done nothing spectacular, so what is the hulla-ballu all about? I have just pointed out a major weakness which the Man evidently has, and people here are just trying to run away from the truth. Jonathan this, Jonathan that. Is it when the international media starts commenting about his embarrassing grammatical blunders, that We will understand that there is still fire on the mountain? haba Please, we need to be more proactive towards issues concerning our image as Nigerians, and not make statements like, " what concerns English language with dividends of democracy?" |

As far as am concerned, Jonathan is a good person, but He is in not the best leader We have at the moment. We need a leader who is an all rounder in every aspect of life, and with that way, Nigeria will not just move forward, we will leap forward. period. |
