Mumu, it is optional, you don't necessarily have to state the destination to start a trip, the only time it is mandatory is when you want to check estimated price.

Plus I'm both cases, the drivers still ask you for destinations as they usually don't get shown till trip is started.

Don't be naive. I use both apps regularly and work closely with uber.
