The management of Lift Above Poverty Organization (LAPO) yesterday said it has spent N5.7billion to empower no fewer than 108,367 rural farmers in 19 states of the country during last year.
Speaking at the annual media forum of the Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in Benin City, Executive Director of LAPO, Sabina Idowu-Osehobo, said the farmers were empowered under LAPO Agricultural and Rural Development Initiative (LARDI).

Osehobo said as part of efforts to boost farming operations in the period under review, pointed out that the farmers were provided with high yield inputs and extension services.

While explaining that LARDI, established in 2007, was geared towards promoting rural economy through agricultural development, improving income, food security and general living conditions of poor rural households, particularly women-headed households and youths, said the beneficiaries were into cassava, cocoa, animal husbandry and fish farming, among others.

She added that in 2016, 76,000 farmers were empowered with N3.4 billion billion through the LARDI.Osehobo said LARDI was deeply committed to its mandate of developing the rural economy with innovative and affordable agricultural financing and support services. LAPO currently maintains 120 branches in 19 states of the country.

Is Lapo given people money for free? Or it's a loan?

This LAPO have put some people into debts, no doubt it has also helped some!

LAPO can make or marr you. But it has made more than it has marred hard working SMEs.

I don't understand what they meant by "spent 5billion to empower... " they lent them (and with high interest rate).
The money wasn't spent by LAPO, rather it was invested by them to get back huge ROI.

The LAPO ought to be a good program but has done more to enrich the owner than the original intention of non-profit organization.

A large part of their funding is grant from international donor who believe they are empowering the poor but loan the cash out at a neck-break interest.

However, hard working traders and farmers still find a place for the loan. It is a laudable project but their lending should be regulated since they are NGO

If its the LAPO I hear about, this seems untrue as many locals have began to boycott them, guess they need to review their interest rates.

No mind them, they collect back double from everybody and if they default to pay back on time, they will collect 3 times the amount or more. Those lapo people ehn!

Lapo that has put one of our neighbour into a deep and non repayable dept, of which he has sold their land so as to clear some, while his motorcycle(d only mobile he has) is been held now by d people he's owing. Lapo... I have never seen anybody who collected loan from Lapo and succeed with the business he/she invested with the money. Every Thursday morning, you see all these married women (without any specific work) running from pillar to post just to meet up with the weekly due.... Most of them will nearly to go church/mosque to give Thanksgiving when they arw through with the payment. But let them face a little challenges, they will run back to that same lapo for loan. The interest is killing...

LAPO is simply doing what its name implies: Lift Above Poverty Organization.

This is way better than stealing Nigeria money and spending it overseas where it will only impact on other peoples' economies.

LAPO I know is synonymous with sending loan defaulters on the run

Is not your biz you are doing. Making high profit return st the experience of the poor farmers. Why talking as if you giving out cash for free. Your interest is fat higher than the commercial bank rate. Is that help?

What a good initiative

This organization is a fraud...thier rates are so high and many ve either run away when they couldn't pay or committed suicide... They will make ur life miserable if u can't pay the weekly stipends

My mummy will say stay away from lapo lotto pool ..And most importantly Lapo......
