Liberia’s former President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has just won the $5 million Mo Ibrahim Prize for African Leadership.

The prize celebrates African leaders that have governed well, raised living standards and then left office without acrimony.

She becomes the first woman to win the prize and 5th person overall.

This is annoying though. While I am not in any way downplaying how smart Mama Sirleaf was (and is) as a leader, she really doesn't deserve the award. Liberia is a mess. For some time now, it has always been one of the poorest of the poor countries in Africa. Of course, Mama was able to manage the country well enough to avoid devastating internal crisis. However, she did almost nothing to raise the living standards. You don't want to be poor in Liberia. Corruption is also endemic there.

If Mama can win this, I see no reason why GEJ should not have. Nonetheless, congrats to her.
