British Government on Feb. 9, through its
export credit agency, UK Export Finance
(UKEF), said it would accept naira payments
from Nigerian business owners trading with
the UK.

(Reuters) - Britain's export finance agency will add the naira to its list of "pre-approved currencies", allowing it to provide financing for transactions with Nigerian businesses denominated in the local currency.

The naira will become one of three West African currencies that UK Export Finance has pre-approved for its programme of funding transactions that promote trade with Britain, it said.

Britain voted in 2016 to leave the European Union, which has forced London to rethink its trade ties with the rest of the world. The United Kingdom and the EU struck an agreement in December that opened the way for talks on future trade ties.

"This is a clear indication of how much value the UK places on its relationship with Nigeria," Paul Arkwright, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, said in the UK's credit agency statement. "It will provide a firm foundation for a significant increase in trade and investment between both countries."

The statement said the UK will provide up to 85 percent of funding for projects containing at least 20 percent British content.

The naira financing will follow the same structure as a someone buying in sterling, except that Nigerian firms taking out a loan in the local currency can benefit from a UK government-backed guarantee.

Analysts welcomed the impact of the financing option on the local currency. But they said it might increase Nigeria's liability as trades mature for settlement and questioned the rate at which funds would be disbursed, since local interest rates are in high double-digits.

Bismark Rewane, head of Lagos-based consultancy Financial Derivatives said the financing deal with the UK would help local importers buy British goods. They had struggled to get foreign exchange at the peak of Nigeria's currency crisis.

Severe dollar shortages in Nigeria in 2016 caused by lower oil prices forced the central bank to allow the naira to float, after which it lost third of its official value. The naira has since traded within a range supported by the central bank on the interbank market.

"If I buy a Rover, the British government is now guaranteeing that I can pay in naira, so the foreign exchange risk has been shifted from me to the Nigerian government," Rewane said.

"If the Central Bank of Nigeria is unable to remit funds to the UK, then the liability will be on Nigeria."

Op, you're quite lazy sha.

Here, let me help you.

Former President of the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce (NBCC), Mr Dapo Adelegan, says acceptance of payment in Nigerian currency by the British Government will enhance trade and technology transfer between both countries.

Adelegan made the assertion in an interview on Wednesday in Lagos.

British Government on Feb. 9, through its export credit agency, UK Export Finance (UKEF), said it would accept naira payments from Nigerian business owners trading with the UK.

Adelegan said that the initiative was a monumental step that would deepen trade, open more opportunities, expand patronage and market scope of products from both countries.

The export credit agency said the initiative was a clear indication of the value the UK placed on its relationship with Nigeria. UKEF added that the step would increase trade and investment between both countries.

“If we look at the quality of manufactured equipment and technology; Made-in-Britain is number one.

“Through this, we will access technology transfer, boost the capacity of workforce and impact on our outputs of consumables and products in the market.

“It is a win-win situation that will go beyond procurement, as there are multiple layers of benefits that this will bring to the economy,” Adelegan said.

Ms Joyce Akpata, former Director-General, Nigerian-American Chamber of Commerce (NACC), also said the initiative would ease importation of goods from the UK to Nigeria and strengthen economic ties.

“The UK has the largest concentration of Nigerians in the diaspora and given cultural ties, it is something that should have happened before now,” Akpata said.

The director general said the initiative would improve knowledge sharing and technology transfer.

Nice move.
It will be a win win situation for Nigeria(Naira) and Nigerians only if, we don't just focus on importing from them.
IMO, i think Naira will be strengthen if we balance this union with exporting our products to UK.
-
We shouldn't depend on Crude oil alone, export of our agricultural products abroad should be promoted.
-
I feel Naira is losing value cos the rate of taking(importing) from other countries is grater than our giving (exporting), which is not suppose to be so.
-
For naira to be strengthen, it is supposed to be a 60% (exportation) and 40% (importation).
Our polithieficians won't pass bills or provide funds for the creation of well equiped factories that would benefit the masses and Nigeria as a whole.
They only care about themselves looting the funds from here to buy houses and others things in other made countries instead of making their own country meet up to standard.
(i dey shame for our politicians)
-
Paypal might not like this news.
Lol.
