Zimbabwe Will Hold First Post-mugabe Elections In July by ortakida: 8:23am On Feb 18, 2018
Zimbabwe has never held an election without Mugabe in over 30 years.

Zimbabwe president Emmerson Mnangagwa had declared that the country would hold its first post-Mugabe elections in July 2018. Addressing a crowd of party supporters, Mnangagwa urged Zimbabweans to avoid violence during the elections.

“We are going to have elections this year around July”, said Mnangagwa. Urging that “we want peaceful and a transparent election. There’s no reason… to be violent.”

Mnamgagwa shared that the elections were open for regional and international observers because there was “nothing to hide.”

He called on Zimbabwe to forge ahead with its future, and leave the past behind. “We are embarking on a journey towards investment to empower our people with skills, opportunities and jobs. A key part of this would be opening Zimbabwe for investment by building a free economy.”

No Mugabe for the Zimbabwe Elections for the first time

One key thing about the forthcoming elections in Zimbabwe is that there would be no Mugabe or Mugabes (his wife).

Former president Robert Mugabe had been the leader of the country for more than 30 years. He became the country’s leader way back in 1980 after being a key liberation movement leader.

However, Mugabe failed to uplift his people. He first imposed tough policies on the white minority. And proceeded to stagnate and eventually kill the economy. Zimbabwe inflation rates were the worst in the world. And their currency was less than unfortunate.

Mugabe won all elections since 1980, even though most elections were opening fraudulent and sometimes violent. He had long been suspected of trying to install his wife, Grace, as his replacement.

Mugabe was however forced out of power in 2017 by the military. He was replaced by his deputy Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Mr Mnangagwa has a lot of tasks before him and he knows it. He has to revive the economy, accommodate a healthy, peaceful political environment, and he has to change the face of Zimbabwe at the international community.
