Yoruba believe that:
1. Oruko omo n'ijanu omo (ones name is the control not to do anyhow)
2. Tori n'gbati omo o ba daran lafi somo loruko (you are named so that you can be recognised when you commit crime).
3. Your name will have impact on your life that's why you can't see yoruba bearing judas (praise), jezebeel (star), reuben, jabez etc.
Yoruba people will consider 3 things before naming their kid viz
- the situation doing pregnancy and around your birth. E.g taiwo, ige, ojo etc.
- somebody in the family that has bore the name before as you will be named after a person whether living or dead
- both your father's and mother's side will give you names and that is why some you see someone with 15 names
A typical Yoruba kid has 4 main names
1. surname which may be name of great-grand, grand or father.
2. a religious name.
3. yoruba names which are most time are preceeded with Olu/oluwa (Lord), Ade (Crown), Ola (wealth/honor), oye and Akin (valor). All of these are unisex names except 'Akin.'
