As a Nigerian, it is easy to see the reason behind that figure as you can hardly see 10 cars without counting at least five Toyotas. Toyota has become that commonplace in Nigeria. There are individuals who have sought to use a different car other than Toyota, but many of them keep running back to the car they ignored. Many have sought to find reasons for Toyota’s dominance but always complicate everything when the reasons are quite simple.



1. Toyota Cars are Relatively Cheap

When you compute the cost of owning a Benz or a BMW, you wouldn’t need to be told why Toyota is commonplace in a country whose 70% of its population lives below average wealth. Even the Nigerian Government understands the difference between Toyota and the German machines so they make you pay higher custom import duty on the latter.



2. They are Durable

While Toyota cars are cheap, they are not the only cheap products in the auto market. One of the reasons why they are popular is that they last for a long time. Fuel is expensive, already; using a car that consumes excess fuel could be a bad economic choice if you have to struggle to fill-up. The fuel efficiency of Toyota brands makes them one of the top reasons why they are Nigeria’s No. 1 automobile. However, we are not saying you should go buy a Toyota Land Cruiser V8 and expect it to consume less fuel than a 4 cylinder Volkswagen Jetta.. It will just do you like film trick.



8. Resale value

An average Nigerian who is buying a car today is already calculating how much he/she will sell it 5 years from now. Toyota cars hold their value pretty well and can still put some coins in your account after its entire life span.

I don't know why we always assume Toyota are more fuel efficient.

I used an Accord Europe for 4 years until October before buying an Avensis and I kid you not, the Accord does way better than this Avensis by far, especially with fuel consumption.

I spend double on fuel month on month now versus month on month 2016/2017.

Well said, though toyota camry used to be the popular brand but lately, Toyota Corolla 05 has taken over.
People say the corolla is very great at economizing fuel and the AC in it is super cold.

But all the same Toyota wins hands down, afterall "The world can not be wrong"

i'm a traveller, you only see/notice those old ones but you don't notice most of those new ones are also vw. north, south and east, anywhere you go, vw is more popular than and other brand

I use a civic right now and guys it's just like motorcycle in term of fuel consumptn. The major problem is d leg(shaft) but 4 yrs and counting d engine has not been opened even fo minor repairs.

This was how we allowed second hand imported cars to replace New Cars in our society. We praised them like small gods until brand New cars became a taboo in our land. May we be blessed enough to make choices. with enough money we can even order car manufactures to make peersonal brand of cars for us. Im tired of write-up meant for those with limited budgets all the time. May we have enough blessings to decide... that was how some people praised Benz 200 until time passed and they became odd figures on our roads.

Rubbish. Author doesn’t know anything about other cars has probably only driven a Toyota and not other Japanese cars. Even if you do a google search you won’t find Toyota among fuel efficient cars. Nigerians and their one track mind. Are Toyota’s even cheap? They keep say Toyota’s are durable yet you see them visiting mechanic all the time.
