Obafemi Awolowo University Workers Disrupt JAMB Mock Examination by HigherEd: 11:35am On Feb 27, 2018
Some non-teaching staff of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, have disrupted the mock examination of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in the school premises.

The mock examination was scheduled to hold on Monday within the OAU premises, being one of the centre approved for JAMB CBT by the examination body.

The Centre Coordinator, OAU ICT, Dr Sururah Bello, told reporters during an interview in Ile-Ife, Osun State, that the examination could not hold after the non-teaching staff stormed the centre.

She said the striking union members were aggrieved due to the fact that the Joint Action Committee, an umbrella body of the three unions, declared that the earned allowance earlier given to the management should be withdrawn.

But, the Vice Chairman of the National Association of Academics Technologist (NAAT), Adeyosoye Olusoji, who spoke on behalf of some union leaders, noted that fact that the strike was still ongoing.

He, however, accused the management of issued a press release and threatening the workers, despite being fully aware of the industrial action.

Olusoji also claimed that the management ordered that the OAU workers should go back to their offices to avoid being dismissed.

He said the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede, had threatened to invite the police into the campus to clear the roadblocks mounted by striking workers.

According to him, this brought about the reactions which caused the aggrieved workers to disrupt the JAMB mock examination.

In his reaction, Professor Ogunbodede denied the allegations, saying he was only appealing to the workers to allow the mock examination to hold as OAU was just part of the designated centres.

He, however, condemned the action of the unions which he said could have a negative impact on the university.

The Area “A” Commander of Police, Moore, Ile-Ife, Funsho Adegboye, who intervened in the matter, commended the maturity exhibited by the workers since the struggle began.

He also appealed to both parties to allow peace to reign and create room for dialogue for the benefit of the students and entire the community.

I think this union is being vindictive because they feel govt isn't giving them as much attention as they'd have given ASUU... They've disrupted Convocation in Unilag, threatened to cut off UNN's power and Water supply, disrupted jamb exams in BUK - but unfortunately nothing but a total shutdown of the entire Nigerian university system is sufficien for govt to pay attention.

As for Jamb they had better start reaching out to all private universities, polytechnics and colleges of education so as to replace the public university centers, so what happened in Lautech won't repeat this year

So fighting for an agreement that was signed in 2009 with FG but yet to be implemented is considered selfish?

Not enough reason to disrupt mock exams for God's sake, put yourself in the shoes of those kids.

Why has government not introduced the 'no work, no pay' rule since December?

As we speak, these lazy workers will still get paid for February after sitting at home for three months, anf after delaying/destroying many lives and destinies.

Somebody should please wake up that dinosaur in Aso Rock, that it's time to take decisive actions about this strike.

Yes, it is selfish. Selfishness is doing something for one’s own benefit, it is the opposite of selfless as in, there is zero gain or ups for the one involved.

From the details you have given, they are selfish.

Please, note that there is nothing wrong with being selfish, we are all inherently selfish by nature. It is a survival and self preservative instinct that God put in all of us, that make us default to this posture.

Having said that, you can argue that they are fighting a good fight or for the right reasons.

you sound as if I'm the one who disrupted the exam, the students were already allowed to write the exam until the VC made some threats which infuriated the union leaders and thus the exam was disrupted.
These same people gave concessions so that the academic session could end despite the strike action.

yes he should be woken up o, the reason why it's difficult to introduce the no work, no pay is becuase the bursary staff in charge of preparing salaries are non academic staff, they deal with the various deductions, variations etc, payroll which is sent to abuja for payments.
The most probable way to enforce this is stop the whole University staff salary but it will affect the ASUU when academics go on strike have they effected the no work, no pay method? It's a very difficult and cumbersome thing to do,though possible.

It's not difficult if there's political will to do so. Bursar is a management staff. S/he can always find a way around that.

In the past, no work no pay' was selectively used against ASUU, the last one being in 2013 when they weren't paid for 6 months. During this time, non-academics got paid.
