PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has divulged why he refused to assent to the Peace Corp Bill.



Buhari noted that security concerns and financial burden of funding the organisation are his reasons for his action.

He stated this in a letter he sent to the House of Representatives which was read during plenary on Tuesday (27/02/2018) by the Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara.

To him, given the “scarce government resources”, funding the organisation will be a financial burden on the federal government.

He then noted that the organisation is a duplication of existing security agencies which are to undertake activities currently being performed by extant security and law enforcement agencies.

The National Assembly passed the Peace Corps Bill in 2017, after a prolonged battle involving the organisation and the nation’s security agencies.

The bill has been widely anticipated by many Nigerians, especially the youth who believe creation of the corps will reduce unemployment.

It will be hypocritical to empower a Peace Corps when the country doesn't not have the capability of being peaceful.

We have NPF, Armed Forces, NIMASA, DSS, NIA, FRSC, NSCDC and others.

What impact will Dickson's Peace Corps bring?

I remember Dickson. He hijacked my Secondary school in 1990 in the name of Cadet Corps. Had to be pursued from the school. I will not go into the rubbish that went on in that school while he held sway.

I'm surprised he's still at it after all these years.

The already existing security outfits should be strengthened and reinforced instead of establishing new ones!

It's totally a waste of resources.

As bitter as it may seem, I ll say it is a good directive by the president cos signing dt bill into law will surely create tension wt other security agencies just like civil defence did due to separation and definition of duties by relevant agencies.
