Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, who is currently the joint top goalscorer in 2018, is just two goals shy of Lionel Messi's tally at the same stage during the Argentine's 91-goal world record year in 2012.

The Portuguese scored his 15th goal of the calendar year on Tuesday night, helping his side eliminate Paris Saint-Germain from the UEFA Champions League.

Only Manchester City's Sergio Aguero currently matches Ronaldo's tally, and could add on to his annual stats when Manchester City host FC Basel on Wednesday night.
With Ronaldo sitting on 15 strikes by 6 March, he has scored just two goals less than Messi had on 6 March during his world record year.

The Argentine had scored 11 goals in LaLiga, one in the UEFA Champions League and two in the Copa del Rey for FC Barcelona, as well as another three with Argentina to reach 17 overall at this stage.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, has scored 12 times in LaLiga and struck thrice in the UEFA Champions league so far, but had no chance to add to his tally because – unlike in 2012 –there has been no international break yet this year.

The 33-year-old, though, cannot rest on his laurels as Messi picked up massive momentum in March 2012 during his world record year. The Argentine scored five goals in a single Champions League match against Bayer Leverkusen, and 13 overall in March that year to take his overall tally to 30 strikes.

It remains seems doubtful that Ronaldo will reach this tally by the end of March as he has only two more matches with Real and another two with Portugal scheduled before the end of the month.

However, the Portuguese has one advantage over Messi's record year in that he has some added fixtures courtesy of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, while Argentina did not participate in any major tournament in 2012.

Messi himself has 13 goals this year already. If there's anyone that'll break that record.. It'll be Messi himself.

Messi did that at the age of 22 years I doubt if CR7 can do this at the age of 33 but nothing is impossible so let's wait and see
