Good day nairalanders My name Is Asad am from a middle class family a 200 hundred level part time student....... I am confused on what to do, so i decided to bring it to nairaland eventhough am a new member, i have been following this forum for 2yrs now....... My problem is that my parent are not in support of my dream to be an entreprenuer they both said i should not even think of trying to any business they just want me to go to school, get good grades and get a job after graduating...... i tried talking to them but is of no use they never listen to me, i once had an oppurtunity to go to Kano then some investors said they would work with me but will have some shares of the business but my parents said no, and am not the kind of person who likes getting my parent angry especially my Mom..... i know some nairalanders have been in my shoes before, how did you survive it and also would you sacrifice your dreams just to make your family happy....... am 19 by the way and from a family of 6...... once talked to my uncle and he said am too young for any business... ..... pls i need your advice.

Asad, you need to crawl before you can walk, and walk before you run.

Your parent are wise and they speak the truth.

If you want ti be an entrepreneur, first go to school, graduate , then start your business. Like who said a student cannot also be in business?

If you love yourself, go back to school. Dangote was not a dropout!

You don't need your parents approval to do some kind of businesses. Might be that your dreams seem too big and they're scared you might lose your investments.

Aside that, some parents (especially those in the civil service) won't appreciate entrepreneurship/investments until they retire. If your parents fall in that category, I would advise you to play along, do whatever they want from you now that you're young BUT keep your dreams intact. Some day, your result will speak for you and silence that uncle that feels a 19 year old is too young to do business.

As a matter of fact, you don't need your uncle to approve whatever you choose to do with your life at 19. You're a part-time student for crying out loud. Time is your biggest luxury now and you can't afford to waste it. You may not graduate until you're 23-24, and btw, your mode of study has constrained you from getting some kind of jobs. So your parents need to quit that fantasy of getting a CBN job that offers early morning tea and lunch.

The business world is harsh.
As a salary earner, I was in business.

You may start as a slary earner and then branch out into business. At the end of the day, it is your financial earnings and power that matters

Fvck what anybody says and be u.. Great opportunities do not come on notice & believe me God who is positioning those biz opportunities ur way has a reason.. I would give anything to be 18 if i know then what i know now my guy.. I have always been the rebel in the family so after my diploma i was supposed to wait 1 year b4 continuing to 200L, that was when i left the house and journeyed to warri met with an old friend of my dad who is more like an uncle to me. This man is well known and the head of Ijaw ppl i stayed in his guest house & had soldiers escort me to anywhere even beating curfew time then cos he took me like family & calls me his son when anyone asks.. So eventually i told him i wanted to work thats the reason i came. I was with him & one of his sons who was same age as mine then. So me and the son later took the discussion further later when he asked me to choose between nnpc or chevron. He later advised me on chevron cos of the Americans. So i met the dad that night & told him of my desire to work with chevron.. He just wrote a small note the next morning on his card: pls assist the bearer he is my son. And that was it guy. I was supposed to resume the next week not any casual job a real job with good position at that young age. So i went back to benin to let my dad know but he was very upset with me that i had to go & see my uncle without letting him know.. I didn't know they were no longer on speaking terms probably biz issues. He forbade me from going back & reminded me of completing my education b4 working. Even when i told him i could be going to school & working at same time. The only reason i did not go back to warri & resume work was bcoz my dad had friction with the man & i didnt want to upset him by making it seem like i was begging for help from an adversary or wtv. School resumed ignored the opportunity... I regret it till this day even though they have now settled their differences. So guy what i'm saying is live ur life by ur rules u are not too young to start making money, anyone that tells u that is an enemy. Take every opprtunity God gives u now. Going to school never stopped anyone from making money & besides making money while going to school makes schooling more enjoyable.. Na word i tell u oo.. If u like u hear am or not na ur cup.

You needed some thing to fall back on if the business did not succeed. It is just the harsh truth.

Business is tricky some times.. Some try once and succeed... some twice etc. If you fall amongst the category that were not fortunate to make it blossom at a go, with your certificate, you can always dust it, look for a job for the time been, raise some money and continue with your dreams.. If you got no certificate, or no trade/ skills, what are you gonna fall back on, arm rubbery? I support your parent to some extend.

Lolzzz very funny u... What if u go to school get the cert & still no job.. I am not saying he should quit school totally i'm just saying he should not quit his dreams.. He can be a student and successful biz man at same time.. In these parts we put so much on acquiring certs witho really getting any real valued knowledge. We just love the title. When in the real world, making it never really meant getting a university degree. Follow ur dreams, get the cert if it will make ur parents happy.. But never give up ur dreams & happiness for anyone..even ur parents. They have lived their lives & they cant live urs too.. Even if u fail at first u dont need a certificate to fall back on.. Abi u keep job for somewhere If u fail keep pushing keep learning from those in ur chosen biz, get more knowledge and never ever quit!!!

My brother believe me this got nothing to do with attaching much importance to certificate... it is called tightening all loosed ends..

I will never advise any one to give up his or her dreams because I am an advocate of what ever makes one happy.... Any move he makes now will affect the future.. either good or bad.

He is 19, let us say he becomes a business man @ 23 and starts flourishing in business, he might decide to get married @ 28, children starts rolling in @ 30. If the business nosedives, due to economic or political reasons and no certificate to fall back on just incase, and maybe the house hold role changes where the wife now became the breadwinner of the home,....

If she isn't good or loyal, we might be here when he will create another thread captioned, " my wife thinks I am a fool because she's now the breadwinner "

This is the time to avoid such stories and situation.. Every one knows that going into business is not easy because of the uncertainties..but everyone needs some thing to fall back on if such situation arises..

Talking about rising again when you fall, if you don't have the right people to help you rise again, it will be a very long road to walk... Some friends / Family members might stop picking your calls thinking u want to beg one thing or another, if it was possible some might even try not to breathe the same air as you..it is just a life situation..
