The use of dirty fuels in Nigeria is a leading cause of death after HIV AIDS and Malaria. The World Health Organization says that 98,000 Nigerian women die annually from the use of dirty fuels; to put that in perspective it means that 2649 women die per state (36states and FCT) and 127 per Local Government Area (774LGAs). The federal Government has articulated her position through the National Gas policy to increase the National consumption from 500,000,000 KG to 5,000,000,000kg, i will share the details as we move forward.

Nigeria consumed 500,000MT of LPG in 2017. The Government has set in motion policies that will encourage the private sector to scale the consumption of domestic gas.

Only LPG and electricity for domestic energy can be considered as clean fuels according to the data in the image, it means that 27.3million homes still rely on dirty fuels.

To have a firm view of the distribution opportunity in the Nigerian domestic Gas market; from our retailing data an average home of 6 consumes 20kg worth of gas monthly
20kg X 12 months: 240kg
27.3 million homes X 240kg= 6,552,000,000kg worth of gas for domestic consumption alone

The African consumption pattern by sector shows that 84% of gas is consumed by domestic households.

The 2017 consumption of 500,000,000kg, 84% accounts for 420,000,000kg was consumed by 1,500,000 households which is

420,000,000kg/ 1,500,000= 280kg

Let us keep the conversation going to share thoughts and opinions on how to move forward.

Kogi, a state in the central region of Nigeria with Lokoja, which was the first administrative capital of modern-day Nigeria as its capital city.

There are 21 local government areas with three main ethnic groups: Igala, Ebira, and Okun.

The total population figure of Kogi state from the National population census 2006 shows a total human population of 3,278,487 with 641, 556 households.

Dividing the human population by the number of regular households, it shows that the average family size per house hold is 5.

3,278,487people/ 641, 556 households = 5 people per house hold.

From our retail experience, the average consumption of LPG for a family size of 6 in Nigeria is 20kg, so from the data in Kogi, the average family size in Kogi is 5 which translate to 16.6kg worth of cooking gas per house hold a month.

Annual Consumption: 16.6kg X 12months = 199.2kg

This research focuses on converting housholds that use Fire wood and Coal:

Energy Equivalence of 1kg of LPG to:

Firewood: 6.5 – 10.8 kg

Charcoal: 10.2 – 29.7 kg
*Source National Gas Policy

Taking the weighted average for the purpose of this research

Firewood: 8.65kg

Charcoal: 19.95kg

*This figure will be used to determine the amount of wood than be saved to positively impact on the environment as we go on.

The number of homes using firewood and coal is 447, 561 (2006 census) and 604,207 (2016 projections) which translates to

447,561 homes X 199.2kg= 89,154,151kg (89,154MT) worth of gas for domestic consumption alone

604,207 homes X 199.2kg= 120,358,034kg (120,358MT) worth of gas for domestic consumption alone.

A weighted average of the two consumption figures above was used to get the potential market size of Kogi state below:

89,154,151kg + 120,358,034kg = 209,512,185 / 2 = 104,756,093kg

The Potential market size of converting households using firewood and coal in Kogi state is 104,756,093kg of LPG (104,756MT)

Wealth and Job Creation Opportunities (Gaspreneurs: Gas entrepreneurs)

A total of 7.956 million Nigerians became unemployed between January 2016 and September 30, 2017, data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows because of the fall of oil prices and recession. LPG distribution and consumption creates a new window for gaspreneurs to make a living out of retailing, logistics and sales of LPG appliances.

The LPG industry will create 15,000 Jobs and 3,000 new businesses in Kogi state alone, write to data@kiakiagas.com to get the full report.

Required LPG cylinders to meet the demand of this market

LPG cannot be consumed without cylinders; to meet the needs of this market, a minimum of 3 million units of cylinders for home consumption and retailer’s distribution is needed to fully address this market. Write data@kiakiagas.com to see full details on cylinder distribution and operational schemes to convert and take this market.

Current Distribution Infrastructure in Lokoja

There are 4 Major LPG plants in Lokoja with a total capacity of 4 major plants with a combined capacity of 115,000kg and 5 mini plants with a combined capacity 7,500kg and 50+ retailers in the capital. Write data@kiakiagas.com to get the entire distribution infrastructure of the Kogi state across all the Local Governments Areas.

Investment opportunities in converting Kogi state and Cost Structure

There is a massive opportunity to invest in Kogi state and the North Central geo-political zone to tap in into the market potential for LPG distribution. Environmental Impact

The weighted average of homes using firewood and coal is 447, 561 (2006 census) and 604,207 (2016 projections) which translates to

447,561 + 604,207 households = 1,051,768/2 = 525,884 households

Households using Firewood: 513,263 (97.9%)

Households using Charcoal: 11,307 (2.1%)

We have established that the potential LPG consumption in this market is 104,756,093KG,

To fully understand the amount of wood that can be save when we switch Kogi state from Firewood and charcoal to wood:

We have established the conversion of 1 kg of LPG to

Firewood: 8.65kg

Charcoal: 19.95kg

Amount of wood that will be saved: 102,556,215kg of LPG (97.9%) X 8.65kg of firewood: 887,111,259.75kg of wood.

Households using Charcoal: 2,199,878 (2.1%) X19.95kg = 43,887,566.1kg of wood, since charcoal is made from wood and the tree trumps.

In total Kogi state will save 930,998,825.85kg whooping sum of wood, we are even shocked at this numbers, this will go a long way to reduce tension between the herdsmen and the farmers because there will be enough lush green vegetation for the herdsmen and farmers read our editorial to learn more http://www.kiakiagas.com/blog/editorial-how-lpg-can-solve-fulani-herdsmen-crisis-nigeria

In Conclusion:

Nigerians like to hold on to traditional beliefs which sometimes make the populace slow to change to a new way of life. Let’s face it, switching the entire nation from dirty fuels to LPG is an interesting challenge but will not come easy because it basically changes the very foundation on which some of these rural communities were built on. For example, most young males meet their brides on their way to fetch firewood in the early hours of the mornings etc young people have to be shown that they can also meet their brides and grooms on their way to the gas stations just like the way telecommunication changed letter writing to sms, whatsapp chats etc.

The benefits of making the switch to LPG are enormous.

Business Creation
Employment opportunities
Environmental impact
Eliminate premature deaths in the rural communities
Lay grounds for the introduction of renewable forms of energy to provide power in their homes.

Business Intelligence Update:

Most of the energy used for domestic cooking in Nigerian homes comes from traditional forms of energy like HHK (kerosene) which

accounts for 40% of the energy consumption in Nigeria, LPG(cooking gas) stands at 5%, while other fossil fuels like firewood and

coals accounts for the remaining 55%.

Now lets do some basic mathematics from the post above

Annual Consumption of cooking Gas stands at 500,000 MTPA (500million KG)

5% of annual consumption= 500million kg (875million litres)

Now imagine if we can switch another 25% of our population from House Hold Kerosene to cooking gas in the next 36 months

50% of annual consumption= 600million kg (1.54billion Litres)

Considering the negative impact of kerosene on the economy (subsidy) and the environment, it's important for us as Nigerians to look

inward and invest in this emerging sector to grow the naira and reduce the emission of green house gases to curb global warming

Investment Flows
Global Investment Flows
From 2008, the developed economies suffered and investments into western markets fell dramatically.
After a small initial fall, from 2009, investment flows to emerging markets increased strongly, until around
2013. As developed economies recover, investment flows to emerging markets are now flat or slightly
declining, while the major investment flows are returning to developed western economies. The growth
period for investments into emerging markets has now ended. Of emerging markets, most of the investment
flows went to Asia and only a small proportion to Africa. Within Africa, investment is now moving away
from Nigeria to more attractive opportunities in East Africa (Mozambique, Tanzania and Kenya) and South
Africa.

over the last couple of weeks, I have been getting kind words from entrepreneurs and investors on how our articles have been expanding their knowledge base about the African Gas Industry using Nigeria as a focus. They are really keen on action steps to take if they want to proceed with investment in the sector. This is what is forming the basis of my article today, to show you how Kiakiagas Limited helps you make sound business decisions and guide you through the hurdles of investing in the Nigerian LPG Industry.

As you walk across Nigeria today, you will observe a new trend of LPG plants popping up all around in petroleum filling stations, small land spaces, Major Plants, Bulk terminals are coming up, increased number of LPG trucks on the road and many write-ups are littered across the internet about the LPG industry, this is as a result of many individuals that are shifting from kerosene and to using cooking gas. The major challenge for the old and new consumers of gas is the fact that the gas plants are not close enough for them which creates a vacuum which entrepreneurs can take advantage of and create value in the sector by brings gas closer to the consumers.

The LPG industry in Nigeria has a value of NGN152 billion ($500Million) with less than 10% already being harnessed. Nigeria is at that point we were in the 1970's when the populace made a massive switch from firewood to kerosene stoves because it was the most convenient domestic fuel at that time.

Dear budding Entrepreneur, if there is anywhere to invest in Nigeria for now is the LPG Industry because it is not a seasonal product and it is a constant domestic requirement for homes and industries.

The KiaKiaGas Solution
Kiakiagas is an integrated energy solutions company with focus on Gases. We have competence in LPG/LNG/CNG retailing, distribution& logistics, Construction and Installation of Gas Facilities, Market research and Building profitable Gas businesses.

LPG INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES ACROSS THE VALUE CHAIN
There is different opportunities across the LPG Industry in Nigeria,
a) LPG Bulk Terminal Storage: this was extensively discussed in my last article, click this link in-case you missed it http://www.kiakiagas.com/blog/retail-lpg-pricing-nigeria to understand the opportunities that are in this segment of the industry.
b) LPG Retailing: this was extensively discussed in my last article, click this link in-case you missed it http://www.kiakiagas.com/blog/retail-lpg-pricing-nigeria to understand the opportunities that are in this segment of the Industry
c) LPG Distribution and Logistics: I have not discussed this, I will just touch it a little. In 2016, Nigeria consumed 500,000Mt (500,000,000kg) of gas. This translates to a monthly average consumption of 41,000Metric tonnes (i.e 41million Kg of gas). The standard used to measure trucking at the loading depot is 20MT truck (1.e20, 000kg), the detailed report is in our logistics business plan.
d) Production of cylinders and cookers: There is massive opportunity in this area, as there is no functional LPG cylinder manufacturing facility in Nigeria, you can request for the business plan
For this article we would be focusing on the retail end of the value chain

ROAD MAP TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUCCESSFUL FLARE GAS PROJECTS IN NIGERIA

There is huge potential in the commercialization of Nigeria’s Flared Gas resources. This can easily be seen from the sheer magnitude of gas flared and the huge gap in domestic gas utilization in Nigeria. According to data from the world bank Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership (GGFR) Nigeria is ranked 7th place in the global gas flaring space.

As a signatory to the Paris Agreement, United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Zero-Routine Flaring Initiative by 2030, the Nigerian Government obviously committed to charting a new course in the global climate effort, initiated a plan that will disincentivize the flaring of gas through encouraging the commercialization and monetization of flare gas, by providing access and title to third party companies that will process the gas and sell the end products to the domestic market.
Aside the environmental impact of gas flaring, there is also the commercial side to it in terms of lost resources that would have amounted to revenue from export, gas-to-power or industrialization. For instance, over a 12 months Period (August 2017-August 2018), Nigeria flared 11% of the total Gas produced within this period: see the chart and table below
Nigeria Gas Utilization Chart (August 2017-August 2018)

There are 12 steps associated with the completion of this program.
1. Registration of Interested parties on the NGFCP portal
2. Access to Request for Qualification (RFQ) by registered parties
3. Submission of Statement of qualification (SoQ), confidentiality Agreement and payment of SoQ submission fees
4. Evaluation of SOQ, selection of qualified applicants and execution of confidentiality agreements.
5. List of qualified candidates to will be published on the NGFCP portal
6. Access to flare gas site data upon payment of Data prying/Data leasing fees by qualified applicants
7. Submission of proposal by bidders, payment of processing fee and bid bond
8. Evaluation of proposals and selection of preferred bidders
9. List of preferred Bidders published on the NGFCP portal
10. Execution of commercial agreements, payments of award fee and milestone bond
11. Issuance of Permit to access Flare Gas
12. Execution of Gas Utilization project and performance bond.
The NGFCP is at the fifth stage now with 203 companies/consortium (out of 240 companies that submitted SoQs) chosen as successful SOQ candidates see list https://ngfcp.dpr.gov.ng/soq-successful-candidates/. The next steps from here onwards will be the real hard facts for the qualified companies. Let’s delve into a description of what the next steps will look like and the key challenges that companies will face in order to make this process a business success, after all they are all in it to make profit right?
