Dr. Bala Muhammad of the Faculty of Communication, Bayero University Kano, has accused Igbo drug merchants of supplying codeine syrups to the north.
The lecturer made the allegation while presenting a paper at the Kano Youth Summit on Peace Advocacy and Development organised by Hamisu Magaji Foundation, at Mambayya House yesterday.

In the paper he entitled: “Nexus Between Youth, Drugs, Crime and Insecurity”, Muhammad blamed the Igbo drug dealers for the prevalence of drug abuse in the northern region, especially Kano state.
He wondered why drug abuse was not prevalent in the South-East region.
Muhammad said the Igbo people supply cough syrup that contains codeine for the consumption of the Northern youth.
According to him, “Our investigation revealed that drug abuse is beyond normal marijuana, cocaine, alcohol, etc. It has moved to the extent that the medicines we take in order to cure our diseases are now being converted into hard drugs.
“We then discovered that it is the handiwork of the Igbo people, who connive with our local people here, to supply the codeine into our region, especially into Kano state.
“There are many instances where Igbo guys were arrested for supplying codeine into Kano and some parts of the North. The cases have been reported in national dailies.
“So, why shouldn’t they take it to their region? Why don’t their youth engage in drug abuse? This is really sad, and we have to rise up to fight this menace.”

The man is 100%. when it comes to drugs Igbos are the undisputed champions known globally for drug trafficking. Not a single week goes by that an Igbo man or woman isn't caught somewhere in the world dealing drugs. I will have to agree with the don on this

ofcourse sir, you're not far from the truth

These people are not only a burden to the north but the rest of the world. Reason why 50% of their population in diaspora are being executed or serving jail terms and not Dominating and DEVELOPING the world like they would want us to believe. They not only strained the mutualistic relationship between our dear country with its european and asian business partners but, As I speak its even a shame to make known ur Nigerian identity in smaller countries like Ghana as drug peddling and cyber fraud is synonymous to the word "Nigeria" there.
That's why I support the possible execution of those caught engaging these crimes, as its done in saner climes, adopted here . it would help curtail to a reasonable extent the bulk of criminals trooping from a section of Nigeria to other regions with the sole aim of causing chaos.

NO! Nigerians are the ones peddling drug abroad and not Nigerians.

instead of you to deal with crux of the matter, you allow tribalism to eat you up from the inside. what solution can be preferred from the tribal angle; arrest every igbo drugs seller in kano?

in that case we should arrest every hijab wearing girl who holds nylon and wanders around populated areas because they are liable to bombing.

stupid dead idiots..

This is one of the consequences of quota system education, you end up breeding half baked buffoons like this lecturer who end up invariably poisoning the minds of the younger generation. When other regions of the country were massively into drug awareness campaigns, what was the north doing ? When southern parents were warning their wards about the dangers if drug abuse, what were northern parents and guardians doing ? They left their kids in the hands of one dirty mallam who left those unfortunate kids to roam about begging without control leaving them to fall into vices like their cherishes boko haram and this codeine addiction. You force them under the guise of religion not to touch alcohol but didn't say anything about codeine or other substances something even my security gaurs from Niger republic while growing up told me wasn't a sin in their religion. Instead of casting dangerous aspersions on tribes thinking you're intelligent, why not go on raids to patent medicine stores to confiscate band/controlled substances as is done in other regions ? CSTR1002:

But there is no drug problem in the East. That should tell you something that supply does not necessarily mean demand.

If there is no demand, the supply will not work.

This mad man should blame his own youths for creating a demand to be met by criminal drug lords.
And so you exonerate your drug dealing kinsmen with such a flimsy excuse. Face facts the man said the truth. Over 90% of codiene sellers in his state are igbos

Question for the don:

Why are Igbos not causing same problem in South-west or South south and other regions?

It's not the Igbos Sir, it's the northern youths who are creating the demand. Business sense, that's all. Igbos are interested in trading. Wherever there's demand you find them ever ready to fill the gap.

If there's demand for shìt, they will troupe in.

That's why there are reported Igbos in Sambisa, filling an established demand.

But codeine is not the only thing northern youths are addicted to.

They are addicted to many other substances including gum.

Take away codeine and they will still be addicted to drugs.

The solution is to educate northern youths on the danger of drugs .

Correct but that's just half the solution. Drug dealers need an education too, perhaps the same kind of education given to their contemporaries in south east asia

People like this are not qualified to teach even nursery school students. The man lacks the ability to present his findings intelligently. Remove his academia garb and he's easily a terrorist.

Same goes for the people who left the fact that some people are addicted to hard drugs, only to chase after the wind. Why is there no drug abuse of such magnitude in the entire south or even middle belt?

Nigeria is so divided along tribal lines to the point that the country will remain useless if nothing is done about it.

Nobody is going after the people arming BH, herdsmen, political thugs, etc, but they turn 360 degrees pointing the blame of their madness and drug addiction elsewhere.

Adults throw their senses (if they ever had any) to the dogs and begin to reason like unicellular organisms just to make their tribe look superior.

Useless tribe-region mentality!

Are you sure we are still on same page? We are actually talking of cough syrup (codeine) which is legal.
The focus should be on cough syrup abuse and not what you are tilted to.

Oga selling codeine cough syrup without a doctor's prescription is a criminal offence. Why do Igbos in Kano persist in selling codeine cough syrup to minors without a doctor's prescription? Its your people's insatiable greed that'd why
