“Dad!”
“Dad, stay with me!” I was shouting
“No dad, look at me, yes look into my eyes, no dad don’t close your eyes!” I said panicking, I was lost, and I was confused.
“Save my dad!!!” I shouted while holding tightly on one Doctor’s lab coat, he yanked my hands off and he scurried away,
My dad must not die, No! I’m not ready to lose him.
He isn’t too old yet, he must see me graduate from school, I must get married and he must see my children before he dies.
He really is in pains, I am in pains too
Blood was dripping out of the deep cut on my head, my vision was a little blurry, my body shook intensely and death was not far from us
Everywhere seems blurry and rowdy, yes really rowdy, ambulances blaring outside furiously, doctors and nurses running up and down, orderlies trying to help and some security personnel standing and trying to help.
‘Book operating room 3!!!’ one specialist shouted
‘Nurse!, let’s move him to the nearest theatre’ one old doctor shouted from another bed
‘Cardiac arrest!!’ one young doctor barked, the tiny nurse close to him shrieked
“pass me the defibrillator!!’ he started cardiopulmonary compression, almost pressing all his weight on the poor patient’s chest
“1, 2, 3, 4” he pressed the patient’s chest as he counts
“1, 2, 3, 4”
“Charge to 200”
“Move back!!”
“Shock” he shouted, pressing two small iron-like instruments on the patient’s chest.
“Charge to 300”
“Move back”
“Shock!!” he pressed the machine again

Wait I’m not making sense!!
Let me start again!

The year 2017 has succeed in leaving, it was New Year’s Eve, everyone seems happy. I was happy, at least new things are going to happen in my life.
It had rained few hours ago, even though it was partially cold, people were still celebrating and I enjoyed every bit of it.
I held tightly to my father, we were on his scooter, I have begged him to take me with him to buy the chicken and other stuffs my mum requested for.
We had left the house around 4:00 pm, I enjoy going to the market with anybody willing to take me, at least it would help me leave the boredom at home.
I let the cold breeze brush past my face on the scooter, all what we bought were well packaged and it was tied to the rear of the machine.
“Whoa!!’ happy new year’s eve dad!!
‘Same dear’ his husky voice replied
We got to a junction and my dad slowed down, the traffic light was on, after some minutes it showed green and my dad accelerated
Within the twinkle of an eye, a very big car rammed into us from the other side, causing the poor scooter to skid, we were thrown off balance, I fell heavily. The driver of the car was drunk, he was coming back from somewhere in company of his friends, the music blaring from their car gave them out, they did not obey the traffic light.
The lorry at the back of the big car also rammed into the big car and another and as if that wasn’t enough another car which was speeding on our lane also rammed into the accident site, he was on the wrong lane.
I staggered to my feet looking for my Dad; he seems to have disappeared from the crash site.
‘Dad!’ I screamed, my head was pounding, there was a deep cut on my forehead, blood was oozing out of my nose, and my left hand seems numb.
I searched frantically for him, people had started gathering, some helping the accident victims, some finding what to steal, and others had called the ambulance,
‘Dad!’
“Where are you!!?
I moved slowly while shouting and screaming for help
‘Etomi!!’ I heard someone called my name
‘Dad’ I hurried to where the voice came from, it was a close by drainage.
My jaw dropped at sight of my dad, he was in a very bad shape, covered in his blood, I quickly called the attention of some people and they helped in lifting him out.
He was among those placed in the first set of ambulances that came, I hurried inside too and another victim was brought in too. We took off to the hospital.
We got to The Traumatology department of Nigerian National Hospital; everywhere was crowded with doctors, nurses, orderlies, wounded patients and relatives.
Now our problem started
Doctors and nurses were just running up and down, no one is ready to attend to my father, a nurse helped us to a bed and since then we were left alone.
I had called home and explain things to them; my mum said she will join us soon.
“Dad!”
“Dad, stay with me!” I was shouting
“No dad, look at me, yes look into my eyes, no dad don’t close your eyes!” I said panicking, I was lost, and I was confused.
“Save my dad!!!” I shouted while holding tightly on one Doctor’s lab coat, he yanked my hands off and he scurried away,
“Save my dad!!’ I spoke hurriedly to a nurse
‘Ehm… all the doctors are busy and there is nobody who is ready to attend to him’. She replied
‘Other doctors from the neighboring hospitals will soon join us’ she said while walking away, another doctor had called for her.
My dad held the hem of my cloth tightly, he was in pain, and his breathing was labored. My eyes almost popped out in shock.
No! I can’t watch him die!!
“Help my Dad!!” I screamed and hurried towards the door
Some doctors were rushing in and I grabbed one of them lab coat
‘Help my Dad! Save my Dad!!, He’s Dying!!’
He stopped walking, looked at me and his countenance changed, his cool face became pale, I was surprised, he isn’t doing anything, I shook him furiously
‘Help us!!”
He came back to reality and I saw blood flushed to his former paled face.
‘Where is he?’
‘He is on that bed’ I pointed towards the bed and he followed me swiftly, he started examining him.
He pointed a bright light into his eyes; he used his stethoscope and tried numbing his toes.
‘Hello sir can you hear me?’ my father only nodded his head
‘Can you tell us your name?’ my dad did not respond
‘He is Mr. Wale’ I answer and I’m his only daughter
He called the attention of one of the scrub nurses.
‘Is there any vacant operating room?’
‘Yes sir, we still have like five empty ones and some would soon become empties once the doctors using them finishes’
‘okay, get me Dr. Bade from cardiothoracic, Dr. Nwezi from Anesthesiology, Dr. Malu from internal medicine and two other scrub nurses, tell them to meet me in theater nine’ he order
‘Yes professor’ the scrub nurse replied
‘And get those three lazy interns attached to me right now!!’ he barked
‘Your father will be okay’ he assured. What about your family?
My mum will be here soon
We will need her to sign the form before we begin the operation’
‘Don’t worry, I can sign it too, I’m over 18’ I said
He looked at me with caring eyes and I was rest assured I’ve entrusted my father in his good hand
You need to get cleaned up’ he said ‘there are cuts on your body and this big one on your head needs suturing’
I will assign a nurse to do it’

Don’t worry sir, just save my dad; I can manage with the pain
We were still talking when three young looking doctors rushed to our bed, they seems to be in a hurry and their dressing gave them away, their lab coat looked like they were in a rush to wear it and one even forgot to tuck in his tie
‘You, you, prepare this man for surgery’ he said pointing at one of the boys and the girl standing beside him.
‘you!, clean up her wounds, and stitch them, let her sign the form then meet us in theatre 9’ he said facing the third doctor.
He was about to turn and prepare himself when an entourage busted in.
‘Your Excellency! Your Excellency!!’ some men in black suit shouted, in from of them was a young man being wheeled into the hospital. A beautiful lady was also accompanying his, immediately I thought she was his wife.
‘Prof, chief wants you to attend to the governor’s son’ a nurse said while approaching us
‘Tell chief I have an emergency operation now, he should call another available doctor’ he replied
‘The nurse was shocked, same as the interns present’. No one dared disobey the chief.
‘Ehm…. Ehm… I think the chief wants you to personally attend to the governor’s son, he is in shock and the chief thinks only you can handle the situation……’
‘I said I’m busy!!’ he barked drawing attention of other doctors in the room
‘Can’t you see that this man needs surgery too’ he said pointing to my dad
‘Should I abandon him?’ he barked
Now get out of my way and tell chief I’m in no position to see anybody now.
And he walked away towards the theaters. The nurse scurried out of sight
The chief is Prof. Bademi, a strict disciplinarian as I heard; he is the chief medical doctor and oversees all administrative work in the hospital. He is respected far and wide and also good too. No one dares him and no one disobeys him, except only one person – Prof. Ade, the man attending to my father.

Few Minutes later…
I have been moved from traumatology department to one of the wards, my father is in the operating room, he is having his surgery, the intern was stitching my cuts, he had cleaned the wounds and he gave me some drugs to relieve the pains.
He said my dad surgery is very complicated; his aorta had been pierced by a bone, and his heart is already failing before we got to the hospital, his left lung was punctured too. Also due to the fact that he was pushed off his scooter with force he had landed in the drainage with force and hurt his spinal cord, three vertebras has been dislocated, and his appendix got busted.
I started crying; yes hot tears ran down my cheek, this is not how I plan to start the New Year.
My mum and my younger brother rushed in, my uncle was with them, they rushed to my bed and I explained everything to them. My mother started weeping profusely and it took the help of the nurse who was fixing my drip and my uncle to calm her down.
‘you should be happy Prof. Ade is the lead surgeon, he’s the best we have here and I’m certain he’s going to do your father well’ the nurse said, she was kind and her words calmed my mother better.
‘I will be back in hours, but if you need anything just hit that button’ she said pointing to one red button attached to the wall beside my bed before walking away to attend to another person.
My mother sat by my bed side as I force myself to rest closing my eyes, I tried going over all what happened and it seems just to make sleep elude me.
My younger brother was with my uncle and they both had walked to the counter to make deposits for the treatment we were receiving. The hospital is a public one so our expense won’t be much. After making the payments, they went to sit at the waiting room close to the theatres.
My mother checked the time, it was 8:47 pm, the surgery had started almost three hours ago and none of the doctors or nurses had come out o say anything to us. We were definitely worried.
Suddenly one nurse ran out of the theater and my mother ran out of the wards towards her, she did not even wait a second; she dashed off and was soon back with bags of blood. My mum tried stopping her but she gently slip off my mother’s grip.
My mum was about to start crying again when one of the doctors came out, he walked towards my bed.
This time, it was my uncle who spoke to him. ‘How is it going sir?’ he asked
‘well, we are really trying our best, we’ve succeeded in stabilizing him and I have fixed his appendix, the orthopedic surgeon too have balanced his vertebra but Prof. Ade is still battling with his aorta, they seems to be more damaged than we thought.
My mum and I did not wait to hear the rest.
We both passed out before the doctor finished talking.
