Tosin Omoyele scored with virtually the last kick of the game to earn Plateau United a 1-1 draw at struggling Heartland in a Matchday 18 game decided at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri on Monday.

The hosts looked to be running away with the maximum points courtesy of Abidoun Thompson’s well worked 21st minute goal but with the last minute of stoppage time being played, Omoyele was on hand to graciously tap home after the ball came back off the woodwork.

Monday’s game was moved by 24 hours after United failed to arrive on time from their CAF Confederation Cup disaster at USMA in Algeria with coach Kennedy Boboye further changing five players from that lineup.

Heartland were playing for the first time under their new Turkish trainer Mehmet Tayfun and they made four changes to the side that lost to El-Kanemi in Maiduguri with Thompson and youngster Onwuebuchi Chinmakpa handed starting berths.

Both players combined for the game’s curtain raiser although the sweet move was started by Moses Akinade who held off the combative Elisha Golbe before feeding Chimankpa inside the box. The youngster then squared for Thompson who had the simple task of tapping into an empty net.

There were hardly any further clear cut opportunities again in the first half as both teams resorted to a battle of long throws between United’s specialist Daniel Itodo and Heartland left back Chukwudi Oparaugo.

The battle of attrition continued in the second half and both teams continued in their struggle to get a real chance of scoring as the game grew jerky and feisty. There were a couple of chances for both sides though with 15 minutes before the end.
