Massage is one of the oldest therapy in the world, and to discover its precise origins is almost impossible. The use of touch for grooming, stroking and rubbing is a behavior that we share with many animals.

Touch is instinctive and from here it is a small step to develop this natural ability into a healing art. There is evidence that every culture throughout the world has used massage in some form or other, and every language, ancient or modern has a word for massage.

Ancient Chinese medical texts, dating work since 5000 years, advocate stroking the body to protect against colds, keep organs supple and prevent minor ailments.

In India, Ayurvedic scripts, from around 4000years ago also recommend rubbing the body to treat and prevent disease. Since then massage has been inextricably linked with India culture. For instance, it customary for a bride and groom and receive a massage before their wedding day, and most India mothers are taught how to massage their new born babies and young children.

In ancient Egypt, bas- relief carvings dating back more than 4000 years show pharaoh Ptah-Holep receiving a leg massage from a male servant, while centuries later, Queen Cleopatra is recorded as enjoying a foot massage during dinner parties.
In ancient Greece, massage was highly recommended for treating fatigue, sports or war injuries as well as illness.

The Roman Empire placed great value on bodily pleasures and rituals, including massage and cleansing, which were practised in the ubiquitous Roman baths.

This was followed by full body massage to awaken the nerves, get the circulation going and mobile the joints.

The middle ages and beyond.
After the decline of the Roman Empire, the Arab world became the center of learning and culture. Arabs physicians added to this knowledge and went on to describe the use of healing plants, spinal manipulation and various forms of massage in great detail.

The Renaissance saw a revival of interest in classical medicine and massage gradually became more respected by mainstream society. European journeys of exploration also revealed how other cultures valued massage. Captain Cook described how massage cured his sciatic pains in Tahiti, and in 1800s there are records of the Cherokee and Navaho people of North America using massage on their warriors.

Towards the modern age.
However, it was at the end of the 19th century that Swedish gymnast, per Henrik Ling, restored to favour therapeutic massage in Europe. Having cured himself of rheumatism, ling developed a system of massage that was based on physiology, gymnastic movements and massage. Swedish massage became part of mainstream medical practice.

This emphasis continued unchecked until the 1960s, when personal growth centres, notably the Esalen institute in California, adapted massage therapy into holistic treatment that could balance mind, body and emotions, rather than simply relieving muscular aches and pains. This holistic approach is now widely used alongside mainstream medicine as a complement of conventional medical treatments.

This is to tell that every one needs a massage.
