Gas explosion
was this caused by the CNG gas?

Exactly what I wanted to say. I use to see this around ring road when I was in Benin around 2009. The technology is not new.

CNG is safe to use, cheaper too..

The innovation is quite old ,I fear for the position of the cylinder in the buses ..best location is the boot
those buses don't have enough space in the boot for the cylinder

Let me enlighten people about this. The gas in use is called compressed natural gas. CNG. It is not lpg, lpg liquified natural gas is the common butane gas used for cooking and its in liquid form. Cng is dry gas with moisture content at all.
Natural gas is what turbines used in generating electricity both PHCN gencos, redemption camp winners canaanland etc.. It is the cleanest fossil fuel on earth this gas is very very safe and there is no hazard of explosion like many of you think. The cylinders you see are extremely thicker than your normal cooking gas cylinders. About 20 mm thick. Even if cases of a very fatal accident, there is no damage to the cylinder. IN Nigeria Nipco and green gas started converting vehicles to run on both natural gas or petrol depending on which on which one is availabe. There ia a button to switch to either petrol or gas. The project started in benin and more than 4000 vehicles run on natural gas in nigeria( Benin and lagos) even some brt buses and they have been running for over 7 years in nigeria alone.
Please do some research developed countries have most of their vehicles, buses and metro trains running on natural gas.

I entered one bus in Benin, the gas cylinder was placed underneath, not inside the bus, that's quite better unlike this one, I can't enter such boss, that's like impending suicide attack
HiddenShadow:
It is a good innovation that needs an adjustment.

Don't put gas cylinders underneath the seats of passengers.

Find another place to put it outside the reach of passengers because of explosion due to leakage & phone calls..

Good Innovation but pls reposition the gas tanks outside the reach of passengers and exhaust pipe.

Place the gas tank underneath the bus and reinforce the protective barrier from leakage.

In order words, put the gas tank in another non rustable steel material in order to reinforce the protective barrier and prevent gas leakage.

Thanks

I got to know about this method when I was in Benin. We got to a filling station to refuel only for the driver to ask every passenger to get down. Ló and behold there was a gas tank in the trunk of the bus. Though I believe it's very economical its very very dangerous. The profit can never substitute for the lives that will be lost in case of an accident. Just imagine if a bus running on gas summersaults? I think this is a wake up call for the FRSC.

With position of those gas cylinders....this is pure disaster waiting to happen......what safety measure have been put in place....Some people think technology is a joke....

most of the vehicles in India uses this KIT ( its called CNG)

I will gladly use that if the KIT set up is available..

It's only becoming new to Nigerians. It's a common sight in Ghana mostly used by taxi drivers and safety standards are adhered to cos it's installed in the booth of the taxis. This one installed in the bus is clearly unsafe and a big risk to the lives of the passengers and the driver.
mikeapollo:
This phenomenon is almost 20 years old in Ghana! Majority of the commercial vehicles in Accra use gas. This cannot be an innovation in 2018, except for the fact that Nigeria is lagging behind in so many basic things and whatever little new thing that we do becomes a ''big thing'' for us to hype and celebrate unnecessarily!

True! The most important thing is to adhere to the safety standards and ensure that the right type of gas, is used during refueling.

Doowegas and THLD GROUP are ready to boost Autogas vehicles conversion, sales and training centres across the country, as both companies have signed a collaboration agreement to promote LPG in transport in Nigeria. Doowegas currently owns over 15 retail Autogas stations in Lagos, while THLD AUTOGAS SYSTEMS BY STAG is one of the leading distributors of LPG fuel technologies.

This partnership is another example of both company’s commitment to the environment, to develop a more sustainable service and to encourage the use of alternative fuels that protect the air quality in cities around the world. Through this agreement, the two groups will be also able to collaborate in the Nigerian market to develop incentives for the introduction and expansion of Autogas vehicles, through their respective refuelling station and dealer networks.

“THLD Group has come to Nigeria at the right time. The present economic recession has necessitated Nigerians to look for alternative but cheaper means of generating power via generator sets and fuelling of their vehicles. There is no better time than now for Nigerians vis-à-vis the governments and corporate bodies to embrace this innovation,” said Olajuwan Olusegun, CEO and managing director of THLD Group.

Meanwhile, Doowegas is also committed to contributing and progressing towards more sustainable energy models. Besides obtaining cost savings, by improving energy efficiency and promoting renewable energies, the company seeks to minimise the environmental impact, especially reducing emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs). LPG is not only used for cooking. Guy, both CNG and LPG can be used to power or fuel cars. undecided It depends on the type of conversion kit, used in your vehicle. sad In Lagos, there are more stations selling LPG autogas, than CNG autogas. Secondly, it is easier to transport LPG autogas from the gas depot using gas haulage trucks, than it is to transport CNG autogas from a depot/CNG mother station to a retail station, using specialised cascades.

It is cheaper, and more environmentally friendly to run your cars on autogas than petrol. wink The conversion process, turns your vehicle into a dual-fuel one, which means you can either use petrol or gas to fuel the car. In times of fuel scarcity, this is always a good thing, because instead of queuing at petrol stations for ages, you can simply switch to gas and go on your way. For some conversion kits however, you still need to have a small quantity of petrol in your tank, before you can switch over to gas, in order to power your vehicle. undecided

You dont get my point. Its really hazardous to be used for commercial vehicle in NIGERIA dont quote me wrong. Cuz some ignorant passenger may fiddle with the pipes.
Can you see where the canister is place.
Tanks are not always inside they are properly insulated as for the mode of combustion, the vehicle is a 4 stroke engine that uses the same theory although on high speeds it wouldn't beat the amount of horses produced from engines running PMS

Sir, it is not hazardous for it to be used in commercial vehicles in Nigeria, provided the canisters or cylinders are installed in the right place, with the correct fittings and proper safety gadgets. sad Putting it under the passengers' seat, as seen in that picture, is totally wrong! shocked It should be in the trunk, and covered with a fire-retardant casing. Once it has been properly installed, by a qualified autogas technician, you would not even see the pipes or hose coming out, as it is carefully screwed or bolted down and tucked away from where it can be seen. So which passenger would fiddle with it?

Bobbybube:

How can it be a coolant and yet drive an engine? The vehicle has a combustion chamber with spark plugs. It originally used fuel or diesel which produces fire or spark that causes locomotion. Even ancient trains that used water had to heat it to boiling temperature.
If such "coolant gas" existes its technology can not be in a rickety molue.
What is there is the normal cooking gas (which is cool at room temperature) but very volatile and combustible.
Nigerians and analysis! It's working for them, shikena! Do you think to make it in life you have to follow d rules?

AutoReportNG:
Nigerians are innovative, smart and hardworking set of people.

AutoReportNG was in Mowe-Ibafo a city in Ogun state and we decided to board a bus at Ketu, before boarding the bus we noticed some strange object like a gas tank under the seat but just as Lagos drivers can do anything to their vehicles, we overlook it as part of those things. The commercial bus decided to stop at a "Filling Station" to top up his tank, but this one seems to be irregular as the nozzle and the way it was sold was quite different from the regular petrol station. That was when the curiosity in us began to manifest, we asked the driver what's going on why is he buying gas instead of buying petrol, the driver just smiled.

We were able to engage the driver as we journey along the trip and the driver was kind enough to explain the modalities, according to him, when the problem of fuel and scarcity is about making them go out of business, they think of a smart way to operate and also think of spending less. According to our findings, the vehicle uses an injector engine and with a gas of 900 naira, the driver said he can go from Lagos to Mowe (through and fro) 3 times even when there is traffic. That is very very cheap and cost effective! Imagine how much he will be making in a day just using gas only.

Let's do the maths a bit, a full bus take 15 passengers and they charged 200 per passenger ((200 * 15) * 2) that is in a trip (through and fro), he will make 6000 naira, imagine going 3 times, that is 18000 using 900 naira gas. Imagine if he goes 10 times in a day, you can imagine.

Wisdom is profitable to direct!

These are some of the pictures we were able to gather...

Thanks for the post and your enormous interest in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a vehicular fuel.Actually this project began in Benin city, few years ago.Picture you posted showed a bus which was converted to run on CNG about 4 years ago.It is now a old bus and the CNG system is still working properly.Meanwhile, this shows the level of ruggedness of the CNG Cylinder and how safe the system is in extreme conditions.

Most importantly, before you can run your vehicle on CNG,you need to get CNG kit/Cylinder installed on it.(we call it CNG Conversion)

Advantages:
CNG is very safe for these 2 reasons:
--Natural gas is lighter than air,so in the event of leakage, it disperses quickly into atmosphere.
--The cylinder is over 12mm thickness and 100% hi-tech steel mold, this feature makes it very rugged and safe against any impacts due to accidents.

CNG is flexible:
--Vehicle can either run on petrol or CNG
--Vehicle can either run on diesel or CNG

CNG is economical:
---About 50% savings on fuel cost is guaranteed when using CNG as against petrol especially.

No Vehicle Modification:
--CNG kit/cylinder is simply considered to be an add on device because original design of the vehicle is not affected after installation.
--CNG kit components are installed in such away that the original positions of OEM parts is maintained. No obstruction to routine maintenance.

Maintenance-Free:
--If the connections of the CNG kit Components is not disturbed during conventional vehicle maintenance,CNG kit installed can
last for so many years and thus requiring zero maintenance.

It is Nigerian's Own Gas:
---Natural gas our local gas and it is in abundant reserve(180 trillion cf),we do not need to ship it outside the country for refining.
Thereby saving our foreign reserve.

Pls feel free to ask me more questions about CNG conversion.

CNG is very save, explosion is the last thing that can happen if you take a simple safety measure.
CNG cylinders, unlike LPG Cylinders,is designed to withstand extreme handling situations.
