All they seek is better pay, working conditions, ability to progress in their field without it been cut short and payment of their salary arrears.
Drs have had their salaries adjusted thrice in 4 years, no one batted an eye lid, the resident Drs went on about 6 months strike the last time no one said anything but placate them, but whenever the other health professionals try and make any request, they start brewing trouble and feel unnecessarily threatened like other health professionals earning better will affect their salary. Since they have smartly positioned themselves so well to occupy all top positions in the health sector they try and stifle others. You are either a Dr in the health sector or nothing.

NMA is not against pay rise for anybody but ask that relativity be sacrosanct according to international best practice.. A doctor with several academic battering and fellowship struggle cannot be on same salary scale with a nurse or pharmacist.. forget the age and all, the quality of service isn't same irrespective of how old one has been in service. We must learn to respect professionalism in this country.

A meeting between the federal government and the striking health workers under the aegis of the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) has again ended with no agreement, a leader of the union has said.
According to the National Vice Chairman of JOHESU, Ogbonna Chimela, the government in the meeting held Wednesday said they are preparing an offer for the union.
“They said they want to make an offer to us but we don’t know what it is yet until we study it and know if its what we can accept or not,” Mr Chimela said.
JOHESU, an association of health workers except doctors, has been on strike for exactly 22 days.
Patients are worst hit as nurses and midwives — some of the most influential members of JOHESU — have all downed tools in federal health institutions.
PREMIUM TIMES earlier Wednesday
reported that the states and local governments health workers had been directed to join the strike by Wednesday, midnight.
State leaders of the union said they agreed to join the ongoing strike so as to mount maximum pressure on government to meet their demands.
“Our position is still clear. The federal institutions are all on strike. The state and local government health workers have joined and it will continue this way till our demands are fully met,” Mr Chimela told PREMIUM TIMES on Thursday.
He added that the government said it will contact the Union by 8 p.m. Thursday for a continuation of the meeting.
When contacted for comments, Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, said the meeting between the government and the union is still ongoing.
“We are still meeting with them,” the minister said in a text message.
On states and local government health institutions joining the industrial action, he said, “I still need to confirm that.”

Non academic staffs feel they should have equal pay and benefits forgetting that both of them get their qualifications through different level of work. I find it funny that NMA had to release this memo for the employer (Govt) to be aware. Their request for relativity is common sense. When you quote international best practice, I assume that you are either being mischievous or uninformed. In USA and Canada well known as standards for international best practice, an intern doctor or resident doctor (doctor in training) earns lower than a nurse, pharmacist and other health professionals. Yes, an attending (consultant) and general practitioner earns higher but NEVER an intern or resident doctor. So stop mis-quoting international best practice. Besides, medical practice in Nigeria is no where near local best practice let alone international best practice.

All this nonsense typing, is it about the foolish Nigerian doctors that know nothing. Why do you think President Buhari had to travel for medical check up outside. It's crystal clear that Nigerian doctors are not worth it at all. I have first hand experience of how doctors in teaching hospitals managed my mom's health almost to death. Just one visit to a Turkish hospital, all their wrong diagnosis were revealed. And today my mom is alive and strong. I rather die than submit myself to be treated by a Nigerian doctor
