Ikemba Ojukwu

The Ikemba Nnewi and Dikedioranma of Igboland, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, recently played host to some Babangida's errand boys aka town-criers, who had paid him a visit under the aegis of a comatose New Nigeria Peoples Party led by one Major Agbo. According to the story, they came on behalf of Babangida to solicit Ojukwu's, and by extension, Igbos' support for Babangida's nefarious plan to foist himself again back on the Nigerian people as president in 2011. Sourced information claimed that Ojukwu bought into the poisoned candidacy of Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida and endorsed him for president. Icheoku screams holy macro, unbelievable and surprise, surprise; and hereby denounces the alleged act of approval as a betrayal to everything Igbo, their fabled resilience and standing up for justice for all Nigerians! Such nod of approval to Babangida's candidacy by Ojukwu himself, sends a wrong message that what Babangida did was of no interest, concern or consequence for the Igbo people of Nigeria. Icheoku says not in our name! Such an endorsement is an affront to the general psyche of Nigerians who are yet to fully recover from the trauma that was June 12th 1993; as well as other concomitant atrocities of Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida's regime; including the thousands of innocent Nigerian lives that were lost under his brigandage and direct supervision/approval.

Icheoku asks, what was Ojukwu thinking or smoking when he poured this heinous libation for Babangida; or has he not "strayed" enough from the course since his return from exile in 1982, when he pitched his tent with NPN instead of the NPP. Admitted he had then promised to take the Igbos back to the mainstream of Nigeria with his joining NPN; but his recent political antecedents, carrying the banner of APGA, suggests he is no longer mindful of the quest for a full integration. When the Igbos and other peoples of the defunct Biafra thought that Ojukwu's going to Abuja, cap in hand, to genuflect before his juniors, for his pension as a retired Nigerian army colonel was already enough insult on what they fought and died for; now comes the mother of all disappointments, the Ikemba's endorsement of the Nigerian worst reject, the most hated man alive in Nigeria, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida. Does Ojukwu, a once darling hero of the Igbos and the entire former Eastern region, still have any moral scruples left in him; or does he think that simply because Ojukwu says so, that makes it alright; and every Igbo man and woman should salute and bow out.

But to Babangida and all those unconscionable chorus-singers who throng around him, and who are goading him into a mistake of an unimaginable self-destructive gambit in 2011, Icheoku says, you are long lost at sea. If Babangida and his minders think that Ojukwu still speaks for the entire Igbo nation, then they have another thing coming. Ojukwu's credibility have since so watered down and eroded in Igbo-land, that of all five full Igbo States and their brother quasi-Igbo states of Delta and Rivers, Ojukwu could only manage to turn enough sympathizers as to win in only his native Anambra State out of thirty-five states in Nigeria. A formerly highly respected regional champion and hero of the people, have now so imploded as to become pigeon-holed into a mere one state's demi-god and henchman. Peradventure, Babangida gambled that because the former INEC's chairman and election manipulator, Maurice Iwu choose not to disgrace Ojukwu completely by awarding him Anambra State, that alone makes Ojukwu the man to go to with respect to Igbo support and votes? And because Babangida is too old, he still sees Ojukwu in the old-school eyes of the Biafran warlord but forgot that the area formerly known as Biafra have split into eleven states, many of which does not hear Ojukwu when he calls. Hopefully for his job, Ojukwu collected a sack-full of IBB's illicit stash; and since 2011 is just around the corner, we shall see how much Ojukwu's endorsement is really worth.

Babangida committed series of mortal sins which cannot be easily wished away, forgiven or forgotten; and not by any true and decent Nigerian alive or dead. How can any sane Nigerian hold a brief of forgiveness for this killer-monster and ask for 'Nigerians to lay to rest all their bitterness and hatred of former President Ibrahim Babangida, over his botched June 12 presidential elections'.

Unfortunately, these Babangida's apologists forgot to add to his June 12th atrocity, his terrorist bombing of Dele Giwa to smithereens; his vicious murder and acid-pouring on the body of Poet Mamman Vasta following a fathom coup; the disappearance of Gloria Okon; the death in a military coup of Thomas Sankara of Upper Volta; the 132 military officers that perished in a staged Ejigbo plane crash; the pains of Structural Adjustment Program (SAP); the refusal to retire late midget of Kano Sani Abacha when he forcibly stepped aside; the destruction of the society known as Nigeria through wanton corruption and the institutionalization of 419 criminality; the first devaluation of the Naira to accommodate his bureau-d-change currency changers, who helped launder his millions of dollars of illegal drug proceeds; his Zango Kataf massacre; the unceremonious retirement of Domkat Bali from the army; the murder of Gideon Orkar and group of other patriotic Nigerian military officers who wanted to remove the cancer that was then killing Nigeria as personified in Babangida; the criminal overthrow of second republic democratically elected government of President Shehu Shagari in December 1983; the stab at the back-like overthrow of the government of Muhammadu Buhari in which he was the gates keeper, being the Minister of defence; - a case of a guardian robbing the fort? So for which of these crimes are Nigerians being asked to forgive Babangida of, or is Ojukwu now so forgetful not to understand that Nigerians still hurt from Babangida's hostage-taking of Nigeria and its associated brigandage and that also thousands of Igbo people lost their lives during the Abiola upheaval.

Just thinking about IBB makes Icheoku want to throw up; and we wonder what type of toxicity is whirling in the brains of all these Nigerians clamouring for his presidency in 2011? Call it personal if you want, but Icheoku refuses to accept that there is any sane Nigerian alive today who witnessed what transpired between 1983 to 1993 under Babangida's infamous military regime, who could sincerely fathom or entertain the idea of the absurdity of an IBB presidency in Nigeria again. To this shadowy Major Agbo who led his NNPP delegation to Ojukwu to solicit his/Igbo support on behalf of Babangida, Icheoku emphasises that there is a chasm between "taking responsibility" and "apologising" for a crime especially the crime of June 12th. And assuming for the sake of conversational deduction that both words have now become interchangeable in their meaning and purport, Icheoku asks, what about the other crimes of Babangida's regime or are they not egregious enough for him to also "take responsibility" for.

This selective "taking of responsibility" by Babangida for June 12th is primarily goal-driven and targeted; and we make bold to add, were it not for his ill-advised move to vie for the presidency in 2011, Babangida would not have ever cared to volunteer that he is taking responsibility for that criminality. Icheoku have never heard about this Major Agbo prior, but says it is good that no one knows him; otherwise what a nightmare it would have been thinking that a person you thought you know is nothing but a shriveling cockroach. Maybe he only rose to the rank of a "Major" in the army through the help of Babangida and now wants to show his appreciation; but sure this man or woman that is preached and sold the gospel of Babangida to Ojukwu, and who forced Icheoku's hands against a revered man, has no shame at all; his/her conscience is as dark as Hades. What a case of Judas IsCariot and the miserable 12 shekels of silver, that forced this human specimen to take upon himself such an inglorious and dishonorable errand trying to hawk a Babangida's candidacy that is dead on arrival.

Further Icheoku disagrees with Major Agbo that June 12th was a 'mistake'; and asserts that it was a deliberate and calculated callous act of wickedness, perpetrated by Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida to deny MKO Abiola his fairly won mandate; which forced Abiola to declare, "with a friend like IBB no one needs an enemy!" The same remorseless Babangida, few years ago, went to the Kano's graveside of Sani Abacha and paid him tribute as the best "head of State" Nigeria ever had. Icheoku says, may be for helping Babangida finish off Abiola and ensuring that Abiola's mandate never resurrected. The definition of "mistake" is some unintended or undesired result of an act, which June 12th definitely was not since it was fully calculated and deliberated upon. Major Agbo's sanctimonious preaching of forgiveness for Babangida is also fraught with deceit since Babangida never adverted his mind to forgiveness nor asked for one by saying he is truly sorry for his sin of June 12th annulment as well as the many other infra-digs of his regime. Talk about asking for forgiveness in HELL, long after a person had assumed room temperature; possibly this Major Agbo is not a christain otherwise he would have been acquainted with the teachings regarding when and how to ask for forgiveness. In answer to Major Agbo's posed question on what Babangida could do to assuage Nigerians ill-feelings towards him, Icheoku says, let Babangida jump off a cliff or bridge; or at least, withdraw himself from the 2011 presidential race. Babangida should help Nigerians to heal by getting out of the Nigerian political scene forever and for good; he is an eyesore and a constant reminder of the evil that he represents.

The Igbos of South East Nigeria, the new minority of Nigeria politics, cannot and have refused to get their acts together politically, because of some people who supposedly are in their leadership positions. Imagine a whole Ojukwu endorsing Babangida for president despite the facts on the ground that makes such an endorsement an untouchable and avoidable poison pill. The other time, it was the South East governors who were caught on the wrong side of the divide following the power tussle that ensued between former vice/acting president Jonathan and the Yar'Adua cabal. Prior to that, PDP's chairman Vincent Ogbulafor guffawed that the presidency remains in the north in 2011 without first checking with or consulting the then acting president to feel him out on his plans or any possible game-changer.That Igbos went through five senate presidents within four years until Ken Nnamani stopped the banana-peel syndrome bears no better testament either as to their political astuteness.For the first time in the history of a representative government in Nigeria, a major tribe like the Igbo, occupies neither the presidency, vice presidency, senate presidency nor the speaker of the house. Inexplicable! In the political gamesmanship of Nigeria, Igbos have been found grossly wanted and deficient; and unless they do something serious to tidy up their losse ends and really fast, every other zone in Nigeria might possibly taste the presidency before them; assuming they are ever considered for such opportunity. But who in his widest imagination in Igboland could ever imagine, a few short years ago, that the south-south minority will first preside over Nigeria before the South East.

Icheoku reiterates that June 12th and all atrocities committed by Babangida is not just the exclusive concern or injury to one certain section or zone in Nigeria, but that of every freedom and democracy loving Nigerian. Whatever war that will be waged or is now being waged or prosecuted to honor that sacred mandate by stopping Babangida in 2011, should also include and find the Igbos within the fore-front of the battle. June 12th is not a wrong against only Abiola or the Yoruba South-west nor is Dele Giwa's murder only an Iru-Ekpen's mortal violation, but these as well as other crimes of Babangida were wrought on the collective psyche of all Nigerians and so must retribution be championed by all Nigerians. Also Babangida's disrespect for a duly constituted Justice Oputa panel of inquiry is not just an affront on the erudite justice but on every Nigerian; and so also was the missing $12billion dollars a general commonwealth fund of Nigerians including the Igbo South East.

Concluding, Icheoku tasks the Igbos to politically wise up before it is too late and end its perpetual genuflecting tendencies to anything out of northern Nigeria, including Babangida. The civil war was since over four decades ago and according to the verdict of reconciliation, there was no victor, no vanquished. The Igbos should become more assertive as full bona fide members of the Nigerian society and forcefully demand to be taken seriously by other components of the Nigerian federation. If the Igbos are waiting for anyone to just hand them power or the presidency without any meaningful serious agitation, then they will have to wait for too long if not forever; as power is never given freely but taken by whatever means necessary. The Yorubas south-west were heard during Abiola's unrest and Obasanjo became president for eight long years; the south south Niger Delta did it with militancy and Jonathan is now a full fledged president.

The truth of the matter is that Babangida is evil and anyone supporting or endorsing him, or seen to be doing either or both, could as well pass for a mini-evil giving comfort to the enemy! Such support and/or endorsement is an unconscionable act, mindful of the blood, tears and sorrow Babangida rained on Nigerians!. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu has not denied that he endorsed Babangida and witnesses bear testimony to this perfidy; hence our condemnation of the said endorsement as blatant, reckless and capable of alienating the Igbos further from other good people of Nigeria, especially among the Yoruba south west. Igbos cannot afford to be seen as the group that glossed over Babangida's crimes and is cavorting with a murderer. Icheoku says to the Igbos, never again shall they allow themselves to be caught like a deer in the headlight, on the wrong side of the intriguing political permutations in Nigeria. Their apparent support for the moribund IBB's very insulting 2011 presidential ambition with this Ojukwu's endorsement is not a healthy political move; and smacks of political naivety. Nigerians will not have a Babangida's presidency in 2011 or any other time; and the sooner the Igbos realize this and jettison off IBB's unworthy political boat, the better.

When I saw the title, I assumed that the writer was criticizing, as "imprudent" or "impudent" those who alleged without verification that Ojukwu had indeed made statements of support for IBB's candidacy. But that's not what I found in the body of the article.

He was born in Zungeru,[2] the son of Sir Louis Odumegwu Ojukwu KBE, President of The African Continental Bank, first President of The Nigerian Stock Exchange and a business tycoon who was believed to be Nigeria's first multi-millionaire.[citation needed] Chukwuemeka's name meant "God has done well." He attracted media publicity at a young age.[citation needed] In 1944, the young Ojukwu was briefly imprisoned for assaulting a white British colonial teacher who was humiliating a black woman at King's College in Lagos, an event which generated widespread coverage in local newspapers.[citation needed] He then went on to study in Britain, first at Epsom College, in Surrey and later earned a Masters degree in history at Lincoln College, Oxford University.[citation needed]

Ojukwu decided to enter the military over the objections of his father, who wanted him to study law. He joined the Nigerian Army and graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England. He later became a Lieutenant Colonel and Military Governor of the oil rich Eastern Region. Following an anti-Igbo genocidal pogrom in the Muslim Northern Region, Eastern chiefs met at Umuahia in the Eastern Region. They decided to declare the region consisting of the Igbo heartland, the Niger Delta (mostly Ijaw) and the Cross River basin (Efik and Ibibio areas) independent. Ojukwu was chosen by the Easterners to lead the new country named "Biafra" after the Bight of Biafra, and appointed Head of State & General of the Peoples Army. His egocentricity and ambition were the chief drivers of the Biafran secession[citation needed] and some historians believe that the war would have been averted if someone else was the governor of the Eastern Region. Despite some early Biafran successes, such as the Abagana ambush in which two divisions of the Nigerian Army were annihilated, the Nigerians slowly gained the upper hand, supported by the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union and, tacitly, by the United States. Among the world's major nations, only France and Portugal offered some support to Biafra.
On June 1, 1969, he delivered the Ahiara Declaration, a patriotic speech, in the village of Ahiara.[3] The speech condemned racism and imperialism, and asserted "our inalienable right to self determination". Ojukwu condemned as genocide the actions of Nigeria and the United Kingdom, for completely blockading Biafra without exception for children or other noncombatants. In a TV interview given in c.1969 he was asked to comment on the food aid sent by the UK to the malnourished children of Biafra. His response was words to the effect "We do not want food from Britain. They are simply trying to fatten us up then shoot us down". In saying this he was referring to the fact that the UK was supplying arms to Nigeria during the civil war.

Ojukwu left Biafra as it collapsed, intending to set up a government in exile. He subsequently lived in Côte d'Ivoire for 13 years. Seeking to bolster his support among Igbos, President Alhaji Shehu Shagari pardoned Ojukwu and allowed him to return to Nigeria in 1980. He joined Shagari's National Party of Nigeria (NPN) and contested the 1983 election for the Senate.
In February 1994 Ojukwu accepted an invitation to give a speech at the Lagos Law School.[4]
As the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), he ran for President in the 2003 presidential election. He claimed to have won the election and filed a court challenge against what he said was the "massive fraud" that allegedly denied him the presidency.
Today Ojukwu lives a quiet life in Eastern Nigeria. In early December 2006 he was again chosen to be the APGA presidential candidate for the April 2007 election.[5] On January 14, 2008 he received his military pension from the Nigerian government, but on this occasion he complained that he was referred to as a lieutenant colonel and not as a general, his rank in the Biafran military.[6]

In 1995, Ojukwu signed government documents identifying himself as a witness to the death of writer Mr. Ken Saro Wiwa, whom Ojukwu had counted as an enemy since the collapse of Biafra's secessionist movement.

Frederick Forsyth, a friend, wrote a biography about him titled Emeka. It was published in 1982. Ojukwu was also a prototype of anonymous General character in Forsyth's novel The Dogs of War published in 1974.
In his collection Wampeters, Foma and Granfalloons, Kurt Vonnegut tells of his meeting Ojukwu and refers to him as "The Nigerian George Washington".

Colonial Legacy, Elite Dissension and the Making of Genocide: The Story of Biafra

Introduction
Between 1964 and 1970, the Ibos of eastern Nigeria were victims of mass violence. The violence occurred in two phases, first as a result of planned murderous assault by the Nigerian ruling elites, mainly of Hausa-Fulani ethnic origin in peacetime, and later in a full-blown civil war between Nigeria and Biafra. Biafra was an enclave that the Military Governor of Eastern Nigeria, General Odumegwu Ojukwu, carved out and declared a sovereign state at the height of the genocidal attack against the Igbo. Ibos were the overwhelming majority in the new Biafran state. They shared the state with minority ethnic groups in Eastern Nigeria. Ojukwu declared Biafra as Governor of Eastern Nigeria, not necessarily as the representative of the Eastern minorities.

The “genocide” in Nigeria raises a number of questions. Did the government intend to wipe out the Ibos as suggested by the statements of some of the war generals, or to politically confine the Ibos to a position of inferiority and subordination as later events indicate? If the intention was to wipe out the Ibos, why did the Nigerian army stop short of accomplishing the goal immediately after the secessionists surrendered, when it had the upper hand? As I argue later, the plausible interpretation of these complex and conflicting data is that the political elites intended to politically subjugate the Igbo and the genocidal dimension arises from the psychological orientation of the politics of Igbo-phobia.2
Patterns of Violence
Violence against Ibos occurred in phases. Significant “group-targeted” violence began as early as 1945, but the major and sustained phases began in 1966. About 30,000 Ibos, mostly civilians, were killed in three waves of genocidal attacks between May 29 and September 29, 1966. The killings were indiscriminate except that victims were Ibos, and they were killed for being Ibos. The killings were not outcomes of mob actions or riots. Evidence from survivors, victims and observers of the genocides prove that the various acts of violence against the Igbos were deliberated and coordinated by highly placed northern politicians with the connivance of some officers of the federal government.

The instigation for violence against Ibos in 1966 derived from various incitements by government functionaries who complained bitterly about Ibo dominance of commerce in the north. This complaint was extended to mean the existence of an Igbo conspiracy to become the new rulers of independent Nigeria.

The pattern of violence during the pogroms (May 29, July 29 and September 29, 1966) was similar to the attack against the Ibos during the civil war that would last for more than 3 years, between July 1967 and January 1970. Although official hostilities were declared between the federal and Biafran side, the conduct of the war by the federal troops in some instances offended the laws of war and invoked images of the pre-war violence against the Ibo. Even when Biafran strongholds were overrun by the federal side and there were no effective resistances, the genocidal dimensions of the war continued to manifest. Several foreign and local journalists reported cruel attacks on Ibos who were neither belligerents or in the way of battle.

There are many documented testimonies of victims and observers about the gross cruelty and barbarism of the Nigerian soldiers meted on Igbos civilians even after the surrender of Biafran rebel soldiers, acts that raised the question of a genocidal motivation. At least that was the conclusion of the Investigators of the International Commission of Jurists led by Dr. Mensah of Ghana. According to Dr. Mensah he received evidence from two witnesses about mass graves where dead, sick and wounded Biafrans were buried alive with some sucklings and “the cries and wailing of the sick, the wounded and the babies could be heard from a long distance away.” In this testimony, it was also mentioned that, when these mass graves had been covered, the Federal soldiers danced native war dances over them. Dr Mensa concluded that “I am of the opinion that in many of these cases cited to me hatred of the Biafrans (mainly Igbos) and a wish to exterminate them was a foremost motivational factor.” 3

There is no doubt from the evidence of international and local observers of the pogroms of 1966 and the three year civil war that Biafran civilians, especially Ibos, were victims of gross cruelty reminiscent of the Jewish genocide. There is sufficient evidence that the masterminds of these attacks were motivated, as Dr. Mensah put it in the ICJ Report, by a “wish to exterminate” the Ibos. But how does this motivation square up with the policy and politics of the war? Is it really the fact that other ethnic groups, especially the Hausa-Fulani in northern Nigeria, wanted the Ibos completely wiped out or driven out of Nigeria?

The difficulty in understanding the genocidal behavior derives mainly from the nature of the civil war: how to reconcile the genocidal intent with the determination to keep Biafrans in Nigeria? It will appear that rather than other Nigerian ethnic groups wanting the Igbo outside the federation, they wanted them inside. Given that genocide usually involves determination to drive the victimized ethnic or religious group out of the territorial space, how do we understand the sort of genocide that wants the victims inside rather than outside?

The Political Economy of Escalation: History, Institutions, and Leadership
“Northerners” and “Southerners”

The ordinary fact of colonialism, as heinous and ruinous as it was, does not adequately explain the tragic direction Nigerian politics took after independence. But the colonial legacy, in which colonialists conceived and birthed the idea of Nigeria to serve largely imperial interests, cannot be overstressed. The Nigerian erudite political thinker and one of the foremost nationalists, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, has described the idea of Nigeria as a “geographical expression.” The various ethnic nations bounded together into the Niger-area by her majesty servants existed as a nation only in name.

The basic characteristic of British colonialism was that it assumed a “single model of customary authority in precolonial Africa…authority was considered an attribute of a personal despotism.”4 Unlike French colonialists who strived to create French citizens out of Africans, the British retained Nigerians in their ethnic constitutions. But the worst is that British administrative policies created the binaries of citizens and subject and of native and settler.

This bifurcation of citizenship manifested physically in the ghettoization of Nigerians in places outside their so-called states of origin. In the case of northern Nigeria, there developed many “Sabon Gari” (strangers’ quarters) in such major cities as Kano and Jos. The incessant incidences of ethnic attacks, often directed against the Ibos, could be explained by this ghettoization and the subsequent complex of “a stranger in his country.” The British colonial system relied on manpower and resources from the south to run the north. This opened the way for immigration to northern Nigeria. But the problem remained: how to maintain northern cultural exceptionalism as well as allow for needed economic interdependence? The result of the tension was a nation that was administratively interdependent but culturally and politically differentiated. The colonial governor’s wide-ranging powers were applied to demographically segregate Nigerians who managed to migrate to northern Nigeria in spite of dissuasion. Major cities in the north were organized around three categories: the walled city reserved for indigenous population; Tudun Wada housing non-indigenous northerners; and Sabon Gari for southerners.5

The politics of “northerners” and “southerners” beclouds the realities of deeper ethnic and cultural diversities and, similarly, deep interrelatedness.6 The politics of indigene and stranger breeds a psychology of envy and resentment. The Ibos were special butts of resentment and envy. Because of economic considerations, Ibos were the most eager to leave their native land in search of “white man” jobs in northern Nigeria. Many of them became successful merchants living in “Sabon Garis.” These pressures created an unhealthy competition in these cities between generally “northerners” and “southerners,” and in most cases, specifically between the Ibos and the indigenous ethnic groups.

Failure of the Rule of Law Institutions

As a result of minority disquiet, the colonial government commissioned a study of minority questions preparatory to independence, “The Willink Commission.” It toured Nigeria and elicited ideas on the constitutional fundamentals of post-colonial Nigeria that could guarantee peace among the many ethnic groups. The commission rejected the demand for creation of more regions for the minorities, and instead recommended the entrenchment of fundamental human rights in the independent constitution as a protection for minorities.7 Thus began Nigeria’s constitutional democracy. In 1960, a bill of rights was entrenched in the independence constitution, and has remained a permanent fixture in Nigeria’s many truncated, voided and breached constitutions.

The bill of rights guaranteed equality under the law and prohibited discriminatory treatment based on gender, membership or other affiliations with a religious or ethnic group. The problem was that whereas the constitution proclaimed citizenship rights for every Nigerian the colonial laws that regionalized and ethnicized access to privileges and rights remained effective. More importantly, political leaders did not take seriously the responsibility to protect those rights when they were breached in respect of any Nigerian. In May 1966, after the gruesome attack against Ibos, the Aguiyi Ironsi regime did nothing to ensure that those who fomented the crisis and directed violence against Ibos were prosecuted. Little wonder that the same genocidal attack was launched against the Ibos again on July 29, 1966.

The idea of common citizenship is the resource which keeps multiethnic states together. Where this idea is abandoned in practice, the empty platitudes of human rights or the institutions of the rule of law are incapable of protecting citizens from being victims. Hannah Arendt was right to have insisted on civil rights above human rights. For where the guarantees of citizenship are feeble or absent, as in Nigeria, common humanity means nothing; and the worst can be done against fellow citizens.8

The Failure of Leadership: Elite Dissension

Individual leadership flaws contributed both to the dynamics of conflict in Nigeria and the actual outbreak of violence. The personality conflict between Ojukwu and Gowon undermined efforts to peacefully settle the crisis that snow-balled into a war. Negotiations for the settlement of the secession crisis and the regaining of Ibo confidence in the idea of one nation fell through because neither Ojukwu nor Gowon could abandon hard positions.
General Gowon and his cabinet focused more on breaking the political power of the Ibos of Eastern Nigeria instead of reassuring and compensating them for the grievous wrong suffered in a year-long massacre. In the face of the threats of chaos and disintegration, these leaders could not rise to the requirements of forthrightness and selflessness. However, based on official statements, we can give the benefit of doubt to Gowon and conclude that in spite of brutality and violence against civilians, acts that contravened the Geneva Conventions, the policy for taking arms against Biafra was to crush Ojukwu’s rebellion and maintain the federation. But this conclusion has to explain such egregious violence against ordinary Ibos and statements by Nigeria war commanders like Benjamin Adekunle, a.k.a. “Black Scorpion,” that “I want to see no Red Cross, no Caritas, no World Council of Churches, no Pope, no missionary and no UN delegation. I want to prevent even one Ibo from having even one piece to eat before their capitulation. We shoot at everything that moves and when our troops march into the center of Ibo territory, we shoot at everything even at things that do not move…”9 Is such statement part of the conduct of a dirty war or does it evince a “motivation” to genocide? At a minimum, we can argue that there was strong hatred and demonization of the Ibos, which made such cruelty and gory killing of civilians conceivable and tolerable, even in the context of a civil war.

[b]General Odumegwu Ojukwu has been faulted, notably by Ken Saro-Wiwa and Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, for rejecting peace overtures from the federal government. Both Saro-Wiwa and Azikiwe believe that Ojukwu stage-managed the Eastern Region Constituent Assembly to authorize him to declare secession. The decision to declare Biafra was a product not of deliberative reasoning in the face of odds but of cajolery, bribery, coercion and sophistry tinged with elements of repression of dissent.

The feuding generals had an opportunity to reverse the momentum to war when the Ghanaian Head of State, Gen Ankra, hosted a peace meeting in Aburi, Ghana. An accord was reached at Aburi whose exact terms became a matter of renewed aggression between the federal government and the Biafran government. Ojukwu’s account of the agreement differed from the federal government interpretation on the extent of power and responsibility of the federal executive council vis-à-vis the regions. Ojukwu absented himself from a meeting called to implement the accord. In his absence the meeting approved Decree No.8 enacted by the federal government to implement the agreement. Ojukwu did not accept the decree because it compromised his position by not granting the regions complete authority in dealing with certain issues that concern their sovereignty.10 Azikiwe faults Ojukwu’s rejection of the decree as in service of greed for power and an attempt to “continue a calculated gambit which has led to the civil war.”11

Even as secession was declared the damage could still have been controlled but for the peculiar interplay of arrogance, ambition and naiveté. Ojukwu had boasted about the Biafran capability to face-down federal soldiers; that he had long planned for the crucial moment and that he knew that by starting the war he was “carving his name in History”; and that he had built the largest army in black Africa.12 The propaganda machines on both sides of the war were merciless in their prevarication and embellishment. They overrated their little successes in battle and diminished the scale of human tragedy in Biafra. Ojukwu and his war generals reluctantly admitted the huge loss the young republic was suffering for fear of demoralizing the people who were volunteering and being conscripted for battle. Propaganda helped to blind the people to the fact that the war could and ought to be avoided. It has been alleged that many deaths occurred because of policies by both the federal government and rebels to block food or medical supplies or to prioritize arms delivery above humanitarian aid. By certain perverse incentives the Biafran army was alleged to be compounding the human suffering in Biafra as a ploy to whip up sentiment against Nigeria and in favor of the Biafran republic.13

The Ibibios say STOP, we will not take it anymore!

It was Mothers' Day. I picked up the phone and called my sister in Lagos to wish her a happy Mothers' Day. One dial, one ring and I was talking to my sister. Next I dialed my sister in Kaduna. One dial, one ring and I was talking to my niece whose mother was out on an errand. Then I dialed my brother in Uyo to wish his wife a happy Mothers' Day. No luck. Two weeks hence and I am yet to be able to reach anyone in Uyo. Why can I get through to Lagos and Kaduna on my first try and unable to get through to Uyo in several weeks? The last time I checked Uyo was still in Nigeria. So why can't I call Uyo once and get through?

The first Federal capital was Calabar. This was moved west to Lagos, and then (using money derived almost exclusively from Eastern Nigeria) to Abuja in the North. Today, it is easy to see with 20/20 vision that this event was the beginning of the marginalization of the Ibibio people in particular and Eastern Nigerians in general. Has anyone ever considered the possibility that we may not have had the civil war had the federal capital been left in Calabar?

Gowon proscribed the first cultural organization that sought to look after the welfare of its people, the Ibibio Union. Today, unless I am mistaken, Gowon is a member of Arewa Peoples Congress. Why is it OK for other parts of the country to have cultural organizations, even violent ones, yet Eastern Nigerians are not permitted to have theirs, even non-violent and transparently democratic ones like the Ibibio Union? The Ibibio Union did not kill any cops, members of other tribes, burn any places of worship, etc. So Gowon, why did you proscribe the Union? The governors in other parts of the country can meet, but if Eastern or South-South Governors meet, it is called treason. Something is wrong here.

Clearly the powers that shaped Nigeria had no intentions of building a just and fair nation. If they did, they would have achieved their aim. Capable Ibibio (and many others from other minority tribes) were sidelined, frustrated and denied the opportunity to assist in nation building. Dr. Udo Udoma was exiled to a foreign country so that the voice of reason and transparency in government would not be heard in the country. They got their wish and here we are.

It is bad enough that distant countrymen who have had little contact with you and do not understand you marginalize you. But when your next door neighbor, whose culture is virtually indistinguishable from yours, such that you wonder how you came to speak different languages joins the fray, one has to ask, why? During the war, when we heard that the Ibibios were regarded as "wives" in Eastern Nigeria, people had to leave room for the possibility that this was propaganda to divide the loyalties of Easterners for easier conquest. But when 30 years after the war, the former leader of Eastern Nigeria repeats this assertion as to how our neighbors view us, one must ask the question, why? Why does Ojukwu think Ibibios and/or the eastern minorities are "wives" and Igbos "husbands"? By this analogy, are the Yorubas husbands to the Igbos or are the Hausa/Fulani husbands to either the Igbos or the Yorubas? Ojukwu must answer this question.

Why is the ability to reason regarded as a weakness? Why is the ability to compromise regarded as a weakness? Why is being peace loving a sign of weakness? Why do we glorify those that rise up and commit mass murder at the drop of a hat? Why do we think that those are brave people that must be accorded the highest positions in the land, regardless of the absence of ability and preparation to competently shoulder such responsibility in the 21st century? Is this how we are going to build "One Nigeria"? I would define bravery a different way. Let me share it with you.

Before the war, Ibibio people had one General in the Army. Today, I know of none. Yet, when shove came to push in the civil war, it was the Ibibio General who bravely took his life in his hands and faced the victorious Nigerian Army to end the fratricidal war. Yet we are not considered brave. Today, other principals of the civil war have prominent positions in the country. Only the brave Ibibio ex- General is languishing in obscurity- as if he has no knowledge and experience to contribute to the country. Since the only qualification needed to be a University Chancellor in Nigeria is to be an ex- General (even if all your education is limited to that obtained in Karatu), why isn't the Ibibio ex-General a University Chancellor? One more thing, it is noteworthy to make another observation here. One would have expected Ojukwu to speak up for Ken Saro-Wiwa and the other Ogoni martyrs. Instead, he acquiesced to their murders because they had been "tried" and found guilty. Is anyone in doubt of what the outcome would have been if the same court had tried Ojukwu at the end of the war? Something is wrong here.

In 1999, the advent of a democratic dispensation uncorked the penned up feelings bottled up during years of military suppression in all parts of the country. It is worthy to note that it was only in Odi in Eastern Nigeria, that the democratically elected president, because some criminals had committed crimes there, called in soldiers to demolish the town. Worse crimes and murders have been and are still being committed in Kaduna, Lagos and Ife. Why only in Eastern Nigeria?

It is now a year since the advent of a "democratic" government. We were supposed to be guided by a constitution. All elected officials from the president on down swore to uphold the constitution. The constitution says that 13% of revenue derived from oil in a given state will be paid to the state of origin. It also says something to the effect that the National Assembly has to appropriate funds before they can be disbursed. What has happened in this past year of "demonstration of crazy"? The president of Nigeria illegally single-handedly signed a check to the tune of billions of Naira to pay a foreign construction company. This same president turns around and denies the states of origin the 13 % derivation revenue for seven months. And when he finally decided to obey the constitution, creative accounting was invoked to reduce the 13% to an effective 7%. Why? In Germany, unlike in the United States, most Nigerians are unable to obtain professional positions commensurate with their qualifications. Yet, the president of Nigeria prioritizes the payment of a German company in Nigeria above paying Nigerians, the owners of the country. I want to sing the blues.

When military oppressors were doing this to Nigeria, we knew they were not there for the country but for themselves. But for a civilian president to refuse to obey the constitution to the letter is downright malicious. What makes the president think that he has to behave under civilian rules for five out of twelve months of a year? Why does he want to cheat the minority tribes of the oil-producing region of the country? Now we know Odi was not an error of judgement. It was intentional intimidation. This is untenable.

The top positions in the country have been divvied up among certain groups. None has been reserved for Ibibio people or any of the minority tribes of Eastern Nigeria.

Before the coming of the British, none of the so-called minority tribes depended on any so-called majority tribe for their sustenance. The majority tribes fared equally badly in the hands of the British. So what is the basis of thinking that the majority tribes have to rule over and cheat the minority tribes?

It is time to cry the "M" word. Ibibio people have been systematically marginalized in Nigeria. It is time for Ibibio people to speak up and let the world know that we will not be taken for granted anymore. We want what is ours. We believe that the sooner a sovereign national conference is convened so that we can restructure this country, the better it will be for everyone. The greater will be the chances that the nation will survive as one. It is only then that the country can join the president to "dey kampe"!

To put it simply, the Ibibio people want 100% control of their land, waters, minerals and all other resources that God put there for our use. In Ibibio country, God gave us dominion over all our resources. We will not stand in the way of others who do not have dominion over their land. The land use act must be repealed immediately. Those states that want a land use act can enact one for themselves. God has given us all we need to survive in Ibibio land. We do not want to be looking for some benevolent ruler in Abuja to occasionally come to give us crumbs of what was ours to begin with.

We will not envy those (if any) who through their own hard work and ingenuity, progress faster than we do. On the other hand, we no longer want to be held back until all our resources have been used to develop other areas that are behind us. We have confidence in our ability to figure out what is good for us, and how to achieve it. After all, we were the first to show the nation that western education was of paramount importance. We showed the country how a group of people can pool resources (instead of stealing from the people) to further the good of the group. We know how to run a transparent government. If Nigeria had wanted such attributes, they would not have marginalized us.

It is time to cry the "M" word. We have been marginalized. We will not take it anymore!

To the minority tribes of Eastern Nigeria I say, you were right fifty years ago when you demanded the COR (Calabar - Ogoja - Rivers) state. They have used the divide and conquer techniques of the imperialists successfully to steal our resources. Do not think that the threats that have been made against you are empty threats. There is strength in size. If you want to survive and gain control of your resources, forget personal aggrandizement and UNITE now for mutual defense. Oil money alone is not enough. It will always attract predators. You need land, people and the oil money to survive. The COR state will provide these.

SINCE THE SANI Abacha military regime seized power in 1990, the Ogoni tribe, an ethnic minority living on the Niger delta in southeastern Nigeria, has suffered extremely brutal repression. Amnesty International points to government-instigated attacks resulting in at least 100 extrajudicial executions, 600 Ogoni detained, and the destruction of dozens of villages.
On November 2, 1995 a kangaroo court convicted nine key Ogoni leaders of inciting to murder. Defying international human rights concerns, the regime carried out the executions on November 10th.
Ken Saro-Wiwa was the most prominent of those executed. He was the author and producer of probably Africa's most popular TV series, "Basi & Co." Running in the mid-eighties for more than 150 episodes, the soap opera had upwards of 30 million viewers.
Saro-Wiwa was also the author of at least seven books, including novels, plays, poems, an autobiography (On a Darkling Plain) and children's books. His 1992 manifesto, Genocide in Nigeria: the Ogoni Tragedy, outlined the exploitation and pauperization of the Ogoni people by both the Nigerian government and Shell Petroleum Development Company.
Instrumental in setting up the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (Mosop), he helped it to carry out effective and nonviolent mass protests and became its chief spokesperson.
Ten years ago this extraordinary man wrote a brilliant antiwar novel, which is now available in Longman's African Writers series.
During the Nigerian civil war (1967-70) -- when one million people died, mostly from starvation and disease -- Saro-Wiwa worked as a civilian administrator in Bonny, a crucial oil port on the Niger River delta. At the war's outbreak he fled from the new Biafran state.
Saro-Wiwa did not identify with the aspirations of General Ojukwu, who was from the area's dominant tribe -- the Ibo. For Saro-Wiwa, then, the rhetoric of self-determination was hollow. As he has pointed out in several of his essays, colonialism isn't simply European, but has been long practiced in Africa by dominant tribes against smaller tribes.

It is hard for me to claim the nation of which I am a citizen and non-patriotism has
nothing to do with it. This country call me derogatory names and yet I am the most
humble, they say that I can not eat on the same table with them and yet there are no left
over nor crumbs dropping on the floor, again I cooked the food and in the face of
abundance, I and my children go hungry.



Is it wrong for me not being excited about this nation? In a nation where citizenship is
un-equal and I am at the bottom of the citizenry, my existence is easily ignored by those
other citizens who are busily grabbing in occupational frenzy at the expense of those
brutally oppressed less citizens. This mindless suppression has been going on for more
than forty years and any attempt to raise an issue of it, is always catastrophic to the
overly raped citizens. The nation, which I hesitate to call mine, kicked maimed and
humiliate me, and make living difficult to impossible to raise my Children. In order to
exploit me to non-existence, she ignores her responsibilities in environmental protection,
pollution of lands and waterways and make no remedy to the down trodden. If you were
I, how will you feel? Will you feel as humble, patriotic and happy about your citizenship?
Heck do I know what you will feel. However, I feel the pains are up to my throat and if I
allow it, my head will follow too.



When I cry for help my neighbors offer no assistance, come to think of it, my neighbors
enjoy the spoil of this cold sometime hot brutal war. [b]As in the murder of Saro Wiwa,
some obnoxious character like Emeka Odumegu Ojukwu went on international tour to
explain why Ken deserves to die. In accordance to Ojukwu, Ken deserves to die because
he (Ken) organized resistance against biafra during the war. Can you see the irony; who
deserves to die from the civil war than Ikemba himself? [/b]This nation calls me insignificant
and yet what they steal from me is so significant that it identifies her as wealthy. How
long will this ungodliness continue? Every time a child of mine protest the uncivilized
barbaric display of aggression by the power that be; with maximum intoxication sets up a
judicial murder camp to snatch life out of him. Sometimes hoping to deter protest, she
denies us the right to mourn and bury our martyrs. I can list the shameless acts of this
nation on end, but doing so will be like the story of Frederick Douglas by Douglas himself.


That in listening to the whole story of Douglas, every black man will be fired up in rage
and attack any white man they see to redress issues of racism. It is not the fear of such
or similar action that makes me not to continue numbering the ills, but lack of space and
boredom. So far, one thing is clear that no one of my neighbors give a hood what my
plights are. How clear can that message get when I have waited patiently for them to
come to my aid to no avail. I am not begging anybody to fight my fights; I only express a
reasonable expectation of a good neighbor. My only regret is that I waited for over fortysemi
years to know that good neighbor is a hoax, dne (does not exist).

wow that was an expose.too hard for the detractors to swallow. An eyeopener i must say.
Just like the political Ibos cant be trusted, the same way Niger deltans cant be trusted. What happened to declaring a national holiday for Ken saro wiwa and making him a national hero, the man who fought with the pen.the Niger Deltans never really stood up to his ideals.

grin are you this daft? even my mother's sister's father's grandmother's husband is not even close to being a yoruba. We dont even have any trace of Yoruba in us- only when oranmiyan came to our land to cause havoc.

I am not surprised that even in the essay about lack of phone service in Calabar, the writer found a way to blame Ojukwu. What's next, "my wife has always been giving birth to triplets, it's Ojukwu's fault".

By the way, an Ijaw columnist has referred to the Igbo as a nagging wife always complaining about marginalization. That does not stop the Igbo from kicking a$$.

Saro Wiwa was in the tank for the same Nigeria that killed him and helped Nigeria. He was therefore complicit in the genocide in Biafra. He killed many children, What makes his own life precious anyway?
