This is called grassroots politics.
The traditional leaders have a say in the electoral process and can influence the voting pattern of their constituents.
Any wise politician knows this and will use it to his advantage.
Kneeling and bowing is part of tradition and should not be seen as an act of submission rather it is a political tactic.
