Aba tailors should go and sponsor the Super Eagle naa. Someone that didn't publish his own book in his country is now calling out a foreign brand for doing their business in their country. Boy, we aren't all as unintelligent as you Jonathan sycophants! Bruce clearly said it should have been given to an Aba firm INSTEAD of Nike &, as usual, you unintelligent Jonathan sycophants are here to spin the story! Nawa!

That's why I say he phrased it wrongly in the first tweet but he clarified thing down the tweet thread ...and how you assume I am a Jonathan sycophant says alot about the quality of your thought process

The jerseys were still sewn by sweat shop tailors in Vietnam ...I think y'all are getting the senator all wrong, he is saying Nike should have used local Nigerian tailors to fulfil some the production quota of the jerseys ... Even though it's wishful at this stage it's not bad to explore such in the future because Nigeria's 180 million population is greatly being underutilized

Na wayo the uncle dey. What is stopping Nike from opening shops here in the first place and employing Nigerian taylor, train them if nor be corruption? We have a designer called dakova or so, why is the government not promoting it if not corruption? This one is coming here to talk about aba taylor, the same person who has many London, Italian suits and tuxedos, living in style and class, even own a cinema. Who is he deceiving?

Export it to the world from Nigeria... its a world cup, their is a ready market, the more your players advance, the more your internally produced jerseys are going beyond even if they are not the tagged "Nigerian original".

Its gives the local brands an international name..
It gives your local online market proceeds..
Nigeria has the population for internal purchase as well as affordable and availble..
The international markets are regulated and can stick to a sole distributor agreement..

Ben is obviously too advanced for Nigerian mentality..
There is no single sense in his post. Aba Traders could have as well endorsed or sponsored the Super Eagles then in turn produce the shirts. But no, you want them to reap the rewards of Nike just because they are Nigerians.

And you actually think Nike would have entrusted her 'merchandise' to some local traders who have never produced anything on a global scale before? You guys are funny.

So he thinks the white people buying the jerseys would have bought it if it was produced in Aba? I am sure he'll be the first person to scream low quality and Nigeria can do better if it was produced in Aba. Rubbish

And I'm sure that suit he is wearing is Versace or Giorgio Armani

Tell that to the Aba firms who have refused to grow enough to compete with the likes of China, Bangladesh, India, and the likes up till today. These same set of Aba folks were trying to blackmail their own state governor when he tried to motivate them to better organize, upgrade and increase their capacity by bringing in Chinese investors who were willing to invest as much as a billion dollars in the state's shoe industry.

https://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/06/aba-shoe-makers-jittery-chinese-shoe-magnets-investment-aba/

They simply lack the competitive edge because after all these years they have still refused to upgrade. Heck, they even still have to go to the SE China that Nike that Nike patronizes in order to scale amd meet really big orders.

Aba firms should consolidate and grow their capacity in order to attract the likes of Nike. #Fact.
You are so busy finding fault with ABA manufacturers, that you still managed to make ZERO points relevant to issue under discussion.
You still don't get it.
Where is the government ?

The quote below illustrates much of your problems.

You don’t know what you are talking about.
Corruption stopped in our country on May 29, 2015 when we changed to Buhari and APC.
Since then, Babachir has been jailed for stealing N375 million from IDPs.
Buhari has jailed Buratai for the multi million dollar mansions in Dubai.
Kalu and Obanikoro are also rotting away in prison.
Please note that corruption is now a thing of the past grin

Was the bargain ever made available to internal makers?

So now that we have millions pirated and sold to Nigerians what has the govt earned from it? Hope you

Murray Bruce used the word "persuade".

It could have been made part of the contract agreement between NFF and NIKE. And it would benefit the Nigerian economy immensely if NIKE sets up a factory in Nigeria.

For now its an opportunity missed. Its a lesson that Nigeria should not fail to learn. Agreements like this should include local production clauses that will benefit the Nigerian economy.

If you are familiar with taxes in the UK, you will know why it costs that much.

If produced here in Naija, would have cost far less than that. Plus the immense benefit to the local economy. Plus the infusion of skilled manpower in that area. So many pluses if it was produced in Naija.

Lets not miss d opportunity to learn from this.

Who did Nike pay money to, to sew the jersey? A firm obviously handled it. That's where he is heading at.

All these dummys castigating Ben Bruce seem to have comprehension problems.
It simply amazes me that all you guys all seem to think in one direction only.
I wonder why it appears so difficult to understand the very very important point that he is making or trying to get across.

The issue here is not about branding, but about the actual manufacture of the jerseys. After , Nike Does NOT manufacture anything. Nike contracts the manufacturer of all their products to sweatshops in Third World (shithole) countries in Guatemala, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, etc. A lot of Nike's products have been found to be made by child labor in slave like conditions in these countries.

The point the Ben Bruce is asking is that why shouldn't Nigerian labour, ABA manufacturing prowess to be specific, not have been considered for the manufacturer of Nigeria's official Jerseys, an enterprise that would have created jobs and $100m into our national coffers ?
Isn't such that one of the functions of a government ? To woo and encourage foreign investments , especially in an area in which we have local talent has been proven to be abundant ?
Are ABA manufacturing prowess not ripe or good enough for international manufacturing contracts from the likes of Nike and other sports wear brands ?

Isn't this where a responsible government that wants to create jobs come in and play a role ?

Ben Bruce is not criticizing Nike's branding or marketing rights. He is criticizing all of us, all Nigerians , our small mentality, our inability to think beyond the periphery.

God bless you for this. When are we going to start protecting our interests? Nigeria first! If Nigeria hadn't qualified for the world Cup will Nike be promoting the Jersey? It's sad that even us the masses have relegated the interest of Nigeria to the background while supporting a brand that doesn't give a shi.t if we have jobs or not.

Until we come to the realisation that we have all we need to emerge a top economy, we will be selling our birth rights for a pot of porridge.

If we don't know that Nike needs Nigeria more than we need them then, we are all ignorant.

How can a nation of about 200 million people, with youth unemployment of about 60% keeps exporting jobs that it doesn't have and yet, we are so comfortable with the status quo.

All these clueless Nigerians throwing tantrums at the Senator will still go to church on Sunday to pray for divine intervention for them to secure jobs as if jobs fall from the sky. Sad!

It's obvious most of the posters don't even know how the production process works. Those shirts are not sewn by Nike in Nike's office. The production is outsourced to a competent firm who would deliver the units being contracted to produce for Nike and Nike does the marketing.
