The Enugu state police command has declared one Chijioke Okenwa wanted for allegedly masterminding the murder of Igwe Steven Nwatu, the traditional ruler of Ogbozine Akpugo, a community in the Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State on Monday June 11th.



Recall that some youths in the area physically assaulted the monarch when he tried to stop them from going for a meeting with the state governor, Ifeanyi Uguwanyi. He later died in hospital.



Reacting to the incident, the spokesperson of the state Police command, Ebere Amaraizu, said preliminary investigation shows that Okenwa was the brain behind the attack. Amaraizu said an arrest warrant has been issued against 48-year-old Okenwa who is an indigene of Ogbozine Akpugo community and is a businessman at the Alaba International Market, Lagos.

“The Enugu State Police Command is advising members of the public with useful information about how the suspect can be traced to report to the nearest police station or contact the command,” Amaraizu said



The monarch was attacked by his subjects and beaten to a pulp. He was rushed to the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, (ESUTH) Parklane, where he was confirmed dead.

A typical instance of bastardization of Igbo culture and a clear desecration of the revered Igbo traditional stool. Under no circumstance a similar situation being meted out to the Obi of Onitsha or the Orizu of Nnewi. It is even unthinkable to happen to the Emir of Gwandu not to talk of the Sultanate or the seat of Kano Emirate. Moreso, no need to even mention the Oba of Benin or Lagos or even the Etsu of Nupe kingdom. The Igbos need to strengthen their kinship institutions frown against the emergence of politically induced autonomous communities (that are common in Imo and Enugu). Igwe without ode-shi and can't disappear in the event of threats to his life is not worthy to represent the ancestors and the spirits of land.
