Nigeria, Argentina, Greece, South Korea: 2010 Fifa World Cup Group B by v3: 4:51pm On Jun 03, 2010 |
Group B (Re-Union of 1994 teams) With few days to the World Cup and VERY little time to prepare , the Super Eagles departed for South Africa with the hope of besting teams like Argentina (Former Winners), Greece (Former European Champions) and South Korea to get to the group of 16. To do this, the boys need to play their hearts out (and our prayers of course)against an Argentine side fielding the likes of Higuain, Leo Messi, Angel Di Maria, Diego Milito to name a few, in their first game. Well, there's a popular belief among Nigerians that ‘God is a Nigerian’ . . .We’ll surely need an extra-man on the pitch that day. PLAYERS TO WATCH (NIGERIA) Osaze P. Odemwingie: A lot of people say he’s probably the best Attacking MF we have In the squad at present. He’s got skill, good passing technique, pace and a good eye for goal. Definitely one player to watch out for during the tourney Vincent Enyeama: Not the best shot-stopper around but one of the best goalies we’ve had in recent times.Voted Best Player in the Israeli league despite being a goalie & has scored 8 spot-kicks for his team this season. Just hope he comes with the ‘right’ gloves on that day. Obi John Mikel : Arguably the best MF we have ATM, he's the "Engine" that drives the team forward with his creativity. This fixture see's his revenge re-union with Leo Messi as he looks to get one over the Argentine for ending his dream of both an Olympic Gold Medal and U20 Cup The table as it stands before Kick Off Group B TEAMS P W D L GF GA GD PTS Argentina Greece Nigeria South Korea Coach Lagerback has called for patience and support for his team. So please NLders, try NOT to swear-in-tongues when Yakubu misses from 6 yards,or is too 'pregnant' to run for 90mins Let’s show the world we fear NO ONE! Support your team!! To VICTORY!!! First of all, lets retitle this to follow the format of illusion2 just for consistency. I hope all other group thread developers can do so to. https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-456499.0.html "World Cup 2010 - Group B - Reunion of 1994 Class" Remember that Greece, Argentina and Nigeria were all in the same group in USA 1994. PLAYERS TO WATCH (ARGENTINA) Lionel Messi: Arguably the best player in the world at this moment. At the tender age of 22, he has demonstrated the professionalism and flair that carries his club to great heights. He is constantly compared to the great Maradona himself who is the national team coach and one of the greatest players that ever lived. Javier Mascherano: A neat but tough tackling defensive midfielder that stamps his authority and commitment at the heart of the midfield as the balance for both club and country. For Coach Maradona not to take the gem called Cambiasso to the WC, then a lot of confidence is being placed on Mascherano's shoulders. This is more evident as he has been appointed the captain of the team. Martín Demichelis: A former defensive midfielder that has been converted to centre back due to his eye to spot danger and deal with it. His contributions in defence was a key part of taking his club, Bayern Munich, to the UEFA Champions League final this season. As a former midfielder, he has better ball possession than most other centre backs. PLAYERS TO WATCH (GREECE) Giorgos Karagounis: The captain and veteran of the national team with close to a century caps. A former Inter player and part of the glorious Greek EURO 2004 Cup winning team. A freekick specialist on his day and fulcrum of the team sitting in the midfield. Theofanis Gekas: A lethal goalscorer for the national team with a record of almost one goal in every 2 games. He is a former top goal scorer for the "German Bundesliga" and the "Super League Greece". Out of all players across all countries going to the WC, he is the highest goalscorer in the SA 2010 WC qualification phases. Angelos Charisteas: Another of the Euro 2004 Cup heroes, and the final's winning goal scorer, still going strong. At 6ft 3, he is an aerial threat. Not a prolific goalscorer but like Heskey is a hard worker that can help others create chances. He seems to have a heart enlargement when playing for the country rather than club. PLAYERS TO WATCH (SOUTH KOREA) Park Ji-Sung: A superstar in South Korea, a first team player at Man U and captain of the national team. A very energetic and skilful player, part of the South Korean team that shocked the world by storming to the 2002 World Cup semi-finals. The first Asian player to play in the UEFA Champions League final game. Park Chu-Young: The Monaco goal poacher is a former youth international and former Asian Young Footballer of the Year. A product of the Zico Football Center that can run 100m in 11 seconds. A dead ball specialist that is versatile in any front position. At 24, his rising star is evident as he has 40 caps for the senior team and is the player with the highest number of games played in the WC qualifiers. Lee Woon-Jae: A 130 caps veteran known in his home country as spider hands. This old soldier at 37 years of age with experience of being at 3 previous WCs and also a penalty-stopper specialist would be the man between the goal posts to stop all attacks that pass the defenders with his |

Dr Kitaun: Brown Ideye. This is serious deal o. So there is really no space for Anichebe? They want to call a striker and decide on Ideye instead of him. Now, except a striker gets injured, he has no chance. |
Re: Nigeria, Argentina, Greece, South Korea: 2010 Fifa World Cup Group B by DrKitaun(m): 2:07pm On Jun 05, 2010 |
Ideye is 22nd not 23rd. And dont u just get it? Anichebe is truly injured or his attitude sucks, too much tantrums wasnt going to help him when there more established players ahead of him, explains why the dearth of creativity in our team has paved d way for Lukman. |

Re: Nigeria, Argentina, Greece, South Korea: 2010 Fifa World Cup Group B by Nobody: 1:01am On Jun 07, 2010 |
Cristalz: its like that abi?? ok then you should do ALL the teams in the group B Argentina- "emphatic" wins (against teams that i am still wondering how they have a football team?? eg: canada and haiti . . . . . . .AND the lost against bolivia.some say it is due to altitude. excuses, excuses. A LOSS is a loss) Nigeria- calm draws and some wins (against tougher teams than canada and haiti. eg: colombia and N.korea) Greece- losing 24/7 during world cup prep friendlies, except for one draw (against N. Korea that nigeria won 3-1) S.Korea- Shaky team. lost against BELARUS. (and won ivory coast. how is that possible?? na wa oh) out of all the teams. who is the most consistent?? i have to give it to nigeria. at least they have not lost against small teams. |
Re: Nigeria, Argentina, Greece, South Korea: 2010 Fifa World Cup Group B by mykali(m): 1:32pm On Jun 07, 2010 |
Mikel was one of the players i wanted to see perform on the world stage playing at this level requires the sort of mentality which i believed he possesses, considering what he did in Holland 2005. but risking his long term future for this short term one wouldn't have been a good idea, i believe they will still qualify for 2014 and come back to show themselves to the world. As for the Nigerian team, i can see some improvement in some departments, although we are still lacking in the left full back position and the Right wing. It is inevitable that we will be doing more of the defending against Argentina, so having Kaita down the right side of midfield won't be a bad idea. the only problem with Kaita is that he lacks the speed for a counter attack, but the way Nigeria plays, we don't utilize our counter attacks so well. i think Lagerback will want to go for a draw with Argentina. and like some one pointed out, there's a possibility of S.Korea causing an upset against the Argies too. |

Haruna Lukman * Date of Birth: 4 December 1990 * Height: 177 cm * Shirt number: 15 * Position: Midfielder * Current club: Monaco (FRA) * International Caps: 4 * International Goals: 1 * First international: Nigeria - Sudan (09-01-2008) Club History * AS Monaco (FRA): From 2008 to 2010 * Crystal FC (NGA): From 2007 to 2008 One of the most precocious gems of Nigerian football, Lukman Haruna burst on to the world scene at the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup, where he captained the team to the world title from his central midfield perch. Just as he displayed while assisting the Golden Eaglets earlier win the African championship, Haruna proved to have world-class drive, leadership and dribbling skills. Then a player at domestic club Global Crystal Academy, a number of big clubs began circling Haruna after the finals, and he signed with French club Monaco soon after. Haruna was also on the Nigerian U-20 team that competed last year at the World Cup in Egypt, but a straight red card in the first match meant the tournament was never going to be as special as the U-17s. He came back from suspension just in time to play in the 3-2 second round defeat to Germany, who came from behind twice and scored the winner in the third minute of second half injury time. Despite missing the start of the season for the U-20 finals, Haruna worked his way into the Monaco first team and was a force to be reckoned with in Ligue 1 this year. The composed 20 year-old burst into the starting line-up the second half of the season, scoring two goals against Montpellier in January in his first start. It was his fine form and ability to push the midfield into attacking positions that made him a late choice for Lars Lagerback. |
